Married to Officer, Pregnant Specialist becomes the Winner!-Chapter 66: Sheng Zexi Scoffs, "That Only Proves the Man’s Incompetence.
Trying to defend herself, she said, "Isn’t it because the heavy snow will soon block the mountains? Supplies will be scarce by then, so I thought to buy more. Also, it’s winter now, things last longer, and since Brother Xi and I have just arrived, we’re lacking quite a bit."
Zhang Shuwan and Sister in law Yu nodded. With the heavy snow coming, it’s wise to stock up more, and even they were buying more than usual.
Moreover, being new, indeed some things needed to be bought for the household.
"What are these bags? They smell like herbs."
"Sister in law Yu has a keen sense of smell. These are medicinal herbs. I plan to make some plasters and pills out of them." Since she hadn’t made them yet, Gu Jia Ning didn’t specify further.
"Wow, you know how to make plasters and pills? Are you a doctor?"
Gu Jia Ning nodded.
"That’s quite impressive!"
As they chatted, the three walked towards the military district. Along the way, Gu Jia Ning’s cart full of goods drew a lot of attention and sparked discussion among onlookers.
Sister in law Yu accompanied them until they reached the family quarters.
Because Sister in law Yu lived in the apartment building side of the family quarters.
"... I’ll come help with the housewarming tomorrow, okay?"
"Alright, thank you in advance, both you and Sister Shu Wan."
Sister in law Yu knew Gu Jia Ning was having a housewarming the next day. Since Gu Jia Ning couldn’t cook, she had asked Zhang Shuwan for help, and Sister in law Yu volunteered to assist.
Gu Jia Ning readily agreed, thinking that an additional helper would ease Sister Shu Wan’s burden.
Outsiders couldn’t freely enter the military area, so the person pushing the cart wasn’t allowed in. Eventually, a young soldier under Sheng Zexi’s command came and willingly helped push the cart to Gu Jia Ning’s home.
Before he left, Gu Jia Ning stuffed two large meat buns she’d just bought at the market into the soldier’s hands.
The young soldier refused, but Gu Jia Ning insisted, so he had no choice but to accept.
"Sister-in-law, if you need any help in the future, call on me. My name is Xie Ze, I just joined this year and got assigned under Battalion Commander Sheng."
"Alright, Xie Ze, right? I’ll remember."
Sixteen-year-old Xie Ze, clutching the large meat buns, bit into one as he walked back. The warm bun, bursting with juicy meat, filled his mouth with rich flavors.
Xie Ze had forgotten how long it had been since he’d last tasted meat. After his father’s death and his mother’s remarriage, he was taken in by his uncle and aunt, who weren’t kind to him. Several times, he nearly starved or fell seriously ill.
Luckily, he was a survivor. This year, he met a former comrade of his father’s who kindly helped him join the military.
By chance, he was assigned to Sheng Zexi’s battalion.
For the strong and carefree Sheng Zexi, Xie Ze felt admiration and saw him as a role model.
Even though Battalion Commander Sheng might not remember him yet, it didn’t matter. Xie Ze would work hard to become someone notable to him. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
He’d heard about Battalion Commander Sheng’s marriage.
A few days ago, rumors spread about how Sheng Zexi was tricked into marrying a country bumpkin. Many were angered, but Xie Ze saw how gently Sheng Zexi helped his partner off a vehicle, filled with tenderness—certainly love was involved.
Hence, he didn’t believe the rumors. Since childhood, Xie Ze knew hearsay wasn’t reliable.
Just like how people said his uncle and aunt treated him well, but in reality, only he knew the truth.
Today, however, the narrative changed. Sheng Zexi’s partner wasn’t a bumpkin; she was a beautiful woman.
Xie Ze thought, not only is she a great beauty, she must also be a good person. Otherwise, why would she give him two big buns just for pushing a cart?
Since joining the camp, Xie Ze was finally seven to eight tenths full, but in the resource-scarce Northwest, as a fresh recruit, meat was rare. Now, enjoying this meaty bun, Xie Ze had an excellent impression of Gu Jia Ning.
Later, he overheard people mocking Sheng Zexi’s wife for buying a load of goods, calling her wasteful.
Xie Ze immediately retorted, "She has money and ration tickets, and they’re new here. With the snow blocking roads soon, what’s wrong with stocking up? It’s not like she’s using your stuff. If you’re so upset, go tell Battalion Commander Sheng to his face, instead of gossiping behind his back."
The person, rendered speechless, left in a huff.
At noon, Sheng Zexi finished his training, got his meal, and on the way back, he too heard rumors about his wife’s big purchase.
There were indeed remarks targeting him.
"Battalion Commander Sheng, don’t you think your wife is spending too much? It’s not good to be wasteful. If she were marrying into my family, she’d never be my daughter-in-law."
The speaker was Director Shen’s old mother, Aunt Shen, who always relied on her son’s position, and, being of the elder generation in the military family quarters, liked to lecture people. She often boasted how her son’s wife was thoroughly submissive.
Sheng Zexi frowned, turned around, and faced her with a stern face, "Aunt Shen, I can earn money, I have money and ration tickets. My wife can spend however she wants. If she spends it all, I’ll earn more."
Challenged, Aunt Shen was displeased. Usually, others conformed to her views, yet Sheng Zexi dared contradict her now. She snapped back, "Young Sheng, you can’t say that. If that’s the case, no amount of money you earn would suffice."
Sheng Zexi snorted lightly, "Then that just shows the man’s incompetence."
"You!"
"Aunt Shen, does your family live by the sea?"
What?
"Why do you have such a wide reach? My wife and I don’t eat your rice; our matters don’t require your concern or meddling."
"Besides, as one ages, it’s better to watch one’s words, speak less ill of others. Consider it an act of kindness for the descendants."
Finishing, Sheng Zexi walked away without another glance.
Leaving Aunt Shen fuming alone, the surrounding onlookers found the scene quite satisfying.
Limited by Director Shen’s position, they couldn’t confront the old lady.
Finally, someone dared to talk back—it was a collective relief.
Battalion Commander Sheng was indeed a good man.
Aunt Shen, still angry, went home and complained to her son, Director Shen. Her implication being Sheng Zexi disrespected her, wishing for Director Shen to retaliate against him.
Director Shen, after listening, felt utterly exasperated.
"Mom, Sheng Zexi is a tough nut, even his father, the commander, can’t control him. I might outrank him as a director, but..."
Besides, Sheng Zexi wasn’t under his jurisdiction. How his mother thought he could punish Sheng Zexi was beyond him.
He was nearly forty by the time he became a director, while Sheng Zexi, if not held back by his father, would already have been his equal.
Sheng Zexi had a bright future, whereas his own career path was nearing its end.
He’d be crazy to antagonize Sheng Zexi.
Finally, Director Shen left, with Aunt Shen so upset she couldn’t even eat her meal.
