Married To My Ex's Brother, Reborn Miraculously-Chapter 237: A fraud?
Chapter 237: A fraud?
Margaret thrust the test result into Anne’s hands. "Read this. The DNA test says it all. You are not Raya. You are a fraud." She raised her hand and slapped her.
Anne stumbled a step back, stunned, her hand flying to her cheek. The sting radiated like fire across her face. Her ears buzzed. Her pulse pounded. Still, she didn’t react.
Her eyes dropped to the report in her hand, now slightly torn at the edge. The report confirmed it—there was no DNA match.
Everything around her seemed to fade into a haze as she stared blankly at the printed words, her mind struggling to process what they meant.
Nathan pulled Margaret aside. "Have you lost your mind? Why did you strike her? She is—"
"I want the pendant back," Margaret snapped, cutting him off mid-sentence. "That belongs to my daughter."
She pushed Nathan away and lunged at Anne, yanking the bag from her shoulder. Anne barely had time to react before Margaret opened the zip and turned it upside down, letting everything inside tumble onto the floor.
Among the scattered items, the pendant clinked as it hit the ground.
Margaret snatched it up, cradling it to her chest. Her hands trembled as she whispered, "Raya, my baby... I’ll find you. I’ll bring you back home..."
She continued murmuring those words.
Anne stood frozen, her heart cracking with every passing second. Her limbs felt numb, her mind caught in a whirlwind of emotional torment. She couldn’t make sense of what had just happened. Was this woman really her mother?
Nathan glanced helplessly between the two. His mother was falling apart before his eyes. And Anne looked devastated, stunned, humiliated. The report claimed she wasn’t his sister, but his instincts, his soul, screamed otherwise.
Anne lowered herself to the floor, her hands trembling as she began picking up her belongings, her eyes glassy, her face devoid of expression.
Nathan knelt beside her, guilt written all over his face. "Anne, I’m so sorry," he said softly with remorse. "Let me help you—"
But Anne quickly blocked his hand. "Please don’t," she said coldly. "I’m not your concern, Mr. Granet. Your mother needs you more. Don’t follow me."
She stood and turned away. But barely a few paces forward, her body swayed. A wave of dizziness washed over her. Her vision blurred. She reached out instinctively, aiming for the wall to steady herself.
Before she could reach the wall, her knees gave out. In the blink, she crumpled to the ground, unconscious.
"Anne!" Nathan cried out, dashing toward her, his heart pounding with fear. He knelt beside her and gathered her into his arms. "Someone get a doctor... Hurry..."
Margaret stood frozen, shock written all over her face. A trace of remorse flickered in her eyes, but she remained still, making no move to assist.
The medical team arrived and quickly took charge, lifting Anne and wheeling her away for treatment.
Augustine had just wrapped up his meeting when Nathan’s call came through. Thinking it was about the paternity test results, he answered promptly.
"Hello?"
"Augustine, you need to come to the hospital. Anne... she fainted."
"What?" Augustine’s voice rose in shock. He hadn’t known Anne was even at the hospital. "She is there?"
"I—I asked her to come," Nathan said. "We got the results, but... please just come. I’ll explain everything when you get here."
Augustine ended the call and immediately turned to leave.
"Sir—" Gustave approached, but Augustine raised a hand to silence him. "Not now, Gustave. I have to get to the hospital."
He stepped into the elevator, his face tight with worry.
Gustave remained where he was, staring at the elevator doors as they slid shut. "That’s what I was trying to tell you... Madam Anne had already gone to the hospital," he muttered under his breath.
She had informed him before leaving, but the anxious look on Augustine’s face unsettled him. "Why does he look so shaken?" Gustave wondered, confused.
Augustine arrived at the hospital in a rush, his heart pounding with urgency. He made his way straight to the reception desk.
"I’m looking for Anne," he said breathlessly.
The receptionist tapped a few keys and glanced up. "She is in room 131B on the top floor."
He gave a quick nod of thanks and turned away, heading for the elevator. As it ascended, his fingers tapped anxiously against his thigh, mind swirling with worry. The moment the doors slid open, he strode out, scanning each door number as he moved quickly down the corridor.
Finally, at the end of the hallway, he spotted room 131 B. He pushed the door open and stepped in, his steps halting abruptly at the doorstep.
Anne lay still on the bed, her eyes closed. A nurse stood beside her, adjusting the IV drip.
The nurse turned to him, noticing his shaken expression. "Are you a relative?"
He blinked and moved closer, finding his voice. "I’m her husband. What happened? Why did she pass out?"
"Nothing to panic about," the nurse said with a calming tone. "Her blood pressure dipped. It’s quite normal during pregnancy. She just needs rest and her medications on time."
The word pregnancy hit him like a bolt.
His eyes widened as he exclaimed, "She is pregnant?"
The nurse smiled gently. "Yes. She is ten weeks along."
A breath caught in his throat. For a moment, he just stood there, stunned. Then slowly, warmth spread across his chest. Joy, disbelief, and excitement mixed inside him. Anne was carrying their child.
"She is resting now. Please call the doctor once she wakes up." The nurse offered Augustine a warm smile before stepping out.
Left alone in the quiet room, Augustine slowly lowered himself onto the chair beside the bed, his heart pounding, full of tangled emotions. His eyes lingered on her face, and a knot of helplessness tightened in his chest.
He reached out and took her hand in his. Bringing it to his lips, he kissed her knuckles tenderly.
"Come on, Anne. Wake up for me, will you? I’m not used to seeing you like this..." His throat tightened. "I miss your fire. Your strength. That smile that always makes me forget the world."
His lips quivered as emotions washed over him. He leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair from her forehead with trembling fingers.
The door creaked open, and Nathan stepped inside.
Augustine looked over his shoulder. As soon as he saw who it was, his face hardened.
Nathan hesitated under the weight of that stare. "I’m sorry," he quickly apologized, "This is on me. I didn’t mean for it to happen."
"What did you do to her?" Augustine cut him off before he could explain. He stood abruptly. "She was fine this morning. Then you called her over, and she passed out. What the hell happened?"
Nathan opened his mouth, then shut it. He looked completely lost. Then he pulled himself together and said quietly, "The DNA test report says Anne isn’t biologically related to the Granet family. My mother lost it. She confronted Anne."
He dropped his gaze in guilt. He couldn’t tell him that Margaret had slapped Anne and that she had snatched the pendant from her.
"She was just as shocked as we were," he finished. "She fainted from the stress."
