Make France Great Again-Chapter 977 - 968: Morocco Territorial Ownership
The empire officials left one by one under Jerome Bonaparte’s order, soon leaving only Jerome Bonaparte and Percy in the entire Imperial Conference Hall.
"How is Orsini’s situation?" Jerome Bonaparte asked Percy softly.
"Your Majesty, I was about to report to you!" Percy responded with a slight flattering expression, "Orsini has confessed everything!"
"What did he confess to?" Jerome Bonaparte asked Percy again.
He wanted to hear what he desired from Percy’s mouth.
"Orsini said that he himself is a member of the Italian Carbonari!
The reason he chose to assassinate you was because he received orders from the Carbonari within Sardinia, who believe that once you are removed, they can establish a republican state in France.
The new republic would overthrow all the kingdoms on the Apennine Peninsula and establish a brand-new republican state for the Apennine!" Percy said the confession that Jerome Bonaparte wanted to hear without disappointing him.
"By the way, how do you explain Bernard commissioning Orsini to assassinate?" Jerome Bonaparte solemnly questioned Percy.
This time, he not only intended to draw Sardinia into the situation but also wanted to ensure that the Kingdom of Britain had no excuse to interfere.
Bernard, who died in London, happened to be the perfect excuse; now, he just needed to link Bernard with the Sardinian Carbonari, and everything would be accomplished.
"Your Majesty, Bernard is a member of the radical faction in France! He was originally in contact with the Carbonari within Sardinia. The assassination order was indeed transmitted from the Sardinian Carbonari to Bernard, then from Bernard to Orsini.
All of it ultimately boils down to the fault of the Carbonari within the Sardinian Kingdom!" Percy confidently said to Jerome Bonaparte.
"You did well!" Jerome Bonaparte showed a satisfied smile, then shifted his tone to a further inquiry, "But how can you ensure Orsini won’t change his testimony in court!
If he doesn’t admit it in court, then we would lose face!"
Although Orsini was in a must-die situation, out of respect for the empire’s judicial system, Jerome Bonaparte had to let Orsini speak in court.
"Besides! There’s also the Republican Faction; I guess they’re surely waiting for the trial to act as Orsini’s defense lawyer!" Jerome Bonaparte reminded again.
The current Republican Faction had long since passed its prime under Jerome Bonaparte’s continual division.
If they wish to return to their former glory, they must gain prominence in France.
There’s nothing that could boost their notoriety more than defending an assassination case’s assassin, let alone when the target was Jerome Bonaparte.
The Republican Faction now hates him deeply. They would undoubtedly do everything possible to defend Orsini.
"Under such circumstances, can you still guarantee Orsini won’t recant?" Jerome Bonaparte solemnly said to Percy.
"Your Majesty! I can guarantee it!" Percy steadfastly replied to Jerome Bonaparte.
"What’s your reason?" Jerome Bonaparte asked back.
Percy told Jerome Bonaparte that he had completely persuaded Orsini during the interrogation; now Orsini was fully on their side.
"How did you persuade someone with no hope of survival?" Jerome Bonaparte curiously asked Percy.
"I told Orsini that killing you is not the signal for a complete revolution but a precursor to a rapid counter-reaction!" Percy answered Jerome Bonaparte, "Only you can truly bring peace to the Apennine Peninsula!"
"And Orsini believed it?" Jerome Bonaparte asked back.
"Yes! He believed it!" Percy nodded and replied to Jerome Bonaparte, "He hopes you can help unify the Apennine Peninsula.
I told him that Your Majesty does not permit a unified Republican Apennine Peninsula but might allow a unified Kingdom Apennine Peninsula!"
"What did Orsini say?" Jerome Bonaparte spoke again.
If Jerome Bonaparte remembered correctly, Orsini, this Carbonari, should not have been fond of the Sardinian Kingdom.
"Orsini told me as long as the Apennine Peninsula can unify, it doesn’t matter if it’s a republic or a kingdom!" Percy said calmly.
"Oh?" A hint of surprise flashed across Jerome Bonaparte’s face, "Orsini figured it out?"
"Yes!" Percy said in a deep voice, "I made a deal with Orsini; as long as he confesses that his assassination actions were instructed by the Sardinian Kingdom Carbonari, I will do my best to convince you to help unify the Apennine."
"And Orsini agreed too?" Jerome Bonaparte asked back. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"Your Majesty, of course, Orsini chose to agree!" Percy responded confidently to Jerome Bonaparte, "Now he has no choice but to trust me!"
"Alright! I understand!" Jerome Bonaparte nodded to Percy, "As long as you can guarantee Orsini doesn’t recant, that’s enough!"
"I can guarantee it 100%!" Percy quickly said to Jerome Bonaparte.
Immediately afterwards, Jerome Bonaparte ordered Percy to promptly draft a report.
At that time, he would have Minister of Foreign Affairs De Luyis take the report to negotiate with Sardinia and Britain.
Once again, Percy assured Jerome Bonaparte that he would quickly produce a written report.
"Alright! These are the matters you must resolve quickly!"
"Understood!"
Percy and Jerome Bonaparte left the Imperial Conference Hall together and parted ways at the staircase at the end of the corridor.
...
After returning to his study from the Imperial Conference Hall, Jerome Bonaparte sat back in his chair and immediately picked up the remaining documents on the table to review.
Soon, he had reviewed all the documents.
Subsequently, Jerome Bonaparte called Bashirio to order him to deliver all the documents to the Secretary’s office.
Bashirio took all the documents away, and after a while, Bashirio returned, holding a document in his hand.
Bashirio placed the document in front of Jerome Bonaparte. Jerome Bonaparte placed it in front of him with his hand while asking Bashirio, "Is this the only document from the Secretary’s office that requires approval?"
"Yes, Your Majesty!" Bashirio responded decisively to Jerome Bonaparte.
"Alright then!" Jerome Bonaparte opened the document and read it quickly.
After a while, Jerome Bonaparte suddenly frowned and then looked up to order Bashirio, "Go and call Minister De Luyss and Minister Vayan over immediately!
Tell them I have matters to discuss with them!"
"Understood!" Bashirio replied to Jerome Bonaparte and then turned to leave.
About half an hour later, Minister of Foreign Affairs De Luyss appeared in Jerome Bonaparte’s study. "Your Majesty, what do you need me for?"
"Luyis, come over and have a seat! Come over and have a seat!" Jerome Bonaparte invited De Luyss to sit on the sofa.
De Luyss followed Jerome Bonaparte’s order and sat down. Jerome Bonaparte handed the document to De Luyss, saying, "This is the Ministry of War’s ’constructive’ proposal on the division of the Kingdom of Morocco’s territory. Take a look first..."
De Luyss took the document from Jerome Bonaparte and read it. After a while, De Luyss looked up with an urgent tone, saying to Jerome Bonaparte, "Your Majesty, we cannot proceed according to the Ministry of War’s ideas, otherwise..."
Before De Luyss could finish speaking, Jerome Bonaparte raised his hand to interrupt, "Minister Luyis, don’t be in a rush to express your opinion!
Wait a moment; someone else will arrive shortly, and you can discuss it with him then!"
De Luyss had to remain silent and quietly await the arrival of the next minister.
About 5 minutes later, the second minister, Vayan, finally arrived at the study.
"Finally, you have come!" Jerome Bonaparte said with a smile and a friendly tone to Vayan.
"Your Majesty, sorry to have kept you waiting!" Vayan replied to Jerome Bonaparte.
"Alright! Enough with the small talk, come over and sit down!" Jerome Bonaparte also invited Vayan to sit down.
Vayan stepped forward with a straight posture, reached the sofa, and saluted Jerome Bonaparte.
Jerome Bonaparte returned the salute to Vayan and then once again instructed him to sit down.
After Vayan sat down, Jerome Bonaparte pointed to the document and said to Vayan, "Since this document was submitted to the Secretary’s office by your Ministry of War, you should be well aware of its content."
"Your Majesty, I am indeed aware of the content of the document!" Vayan replied with a definite tone to Jerome Bonaparte.
"What is your personal view on this matter?" Jerome Bonaparte asked Vayan.
"Your Majesty, I believe we should not make such significant concessions to Spain!" Minister Vayan replied firmly, "Throughout the entire war, the Kingdom of Spain barely contributed!
Why should they take away so much land? Oujda was captured by us! And so was Uzhan!"
Before Jerome Bonaparte could speak, De Luyss interjected and said to Minister Vayan, "Minister Vayan, you shouldn’t speak like that! These conditions are what we promised Spain beforehand; we cannot lose an ally over a tiny piece of land!"
"A tiny piece of land! It accounts for one-fifth of the entire Kingdom of Morocco!" Minister Vayan retorted with a slightly exaggerated expression towards De Luyss, "Moreover, it is a coastal area!
The Kingdom of Spain made only a minor effort yet wants to take such a large portion of the cake; it is utterly absurd!"
