Chapter 188: Chapter 188 War

Xavier couldn’t tell how close they were to the human continent, but he knew they were still over the ocean, as all he could see behind him was water. They had been flying like this for over an hour.

"Star, are you getting tired?" Xavier asked, as he knew at this speed she would definitely be under a lot of stress.

Even though he had no idea how dragons worked, he knew flying like this would consume her stamina or Mana, whichever one she was using to fly this fast.

"Not really, I can go like this for five more hours, we should be able to get there before nightfall," Star spoke.

Xavier was only praying now that Avalon was still standing. If Avalon had fallen, then he knew demons would have overrun the kingdom and killed all the humans. Some might escape, but it wouldn’t be long before they were found and killed.

Avalon was the strongest nation on the human continent, and since Azure said it was the last stronghold, it meant that other nations had abandoned their kingdoms and fled to Avalon for shelter.

’What was the goddess of lust thinking sending me to fight a losing fight, wait...what about the champion sent by the god of war, Cynthia’

Xavier knew that if she was sent by the god of war, then she should be stronger than he. Even though she couldn’t copy other abilities, she should have the base strength, and with all the training, she should be able to stand against demons.

Xavier’s thoughts were occupied; everything ran through his brain. He thought of every possibility, and none of them were good for humans. The only one that might be good was if Avalon was still standing.

And for that to happen, either they were able to hold off the demons, or they had defeated the demon queen.

’This isn’t going to solve anything’ Xavier muttered to himself as he took a deep breath and cleared his head.

He took a slow breath and pushed the thoughts out of his mind. Thinking too much wasn’t helping. It was only making his chest tighter and making him worry.

He lifted his head slowly just enough to see ahead.

The wind whipped against his face as Star flew across the sky. He had to infuse Mana to shield his face before his eyes could open, and the ocean was a long blue stretch beneath them.

He couldn’t see any land ahead, not even a small island. Just water and clouds.

"We’ll make it, worrying won’t change the outcome" Star spoke.

"Ohh, look at you reassuring me, I thought you were going to dart the moment we land, have you reconsidered because of what Azure said"

Star didn’t answer; instead, she scoffed. What he said was true. She couldn’t return to Aetherion, and she also couldn’t return to the beast continent, as there was a chance she would run into other dragons.

But humans were the last species she would stay with, even though she hadn’t been around humans, dragons hate humans naturally, like it was in their DNA.

Time passed, then more. The sun had started to shift across the sky. They were definitely moving fast, faster than any normal creature could dream of but yet the ocean still stretched endlessly.

He tightened his grip on her scales as he looked forward again, his eyes scanning the horizon.

Somewhere ahead was Avalon. Somewhere ahead his friend, his people, the people of Avalon might be fighting, running, or dying.

"I swear," Xavier whispered under his breath, "if Avalon is still standing... I’m not letting it fall, the only way that would happen is if I die first"

The wind carried his words forward as Star continued her flight. She heard what he said, but didn’t speak; she was thinking about herself.

She had no idea if Xavier would let her go, especially if the war was a losing one; humans would need everything they had, and she could be easily controlled by Xavier, so she would have no say in the matter, but she was still hoping.

The journey continued for hours on end, and even Xavier was reaching his limit; his body was in pain because of his position, and he was hungry, but they didn’t stop.

Suddenly, Star’s speed began to drop, little by little, and the pressure on Xavier’s body lightened until she was no longer tearing through the sky; she was simply gliding.

Xavier forced his stiff neck upward, and his tired eyes widened as he looked, In front of them was land, real land.

Trees stretching as far as he could see, tall mountains in the distance, rivers like lines cutting through the green. An entire forested coastline appeared below them, so wide it felt endless.

They had finally reached the human continent.

The sun was beginning to set, and in an hour or two, it would be nighttime. Xavier had to get a good look so he would know which direction to go. He had seen a map plenty of times, and it usually stops at the oceans and nothing beyond.

"Should I just keep flying straight?" Star asked as she turned her head towards Xavier.

"Yeah, I’m still trying to find..."Xavier stopped as he looked forward, seeing a really tall mountain, so tall that its peaks were reaching the clouds, and immediately he knew.

"Over there, once you get to that mountain, fly straight in the direction of those smaller mountains close to it," Xavier spoke, and Star changed directions a little.

She was still flying faster, and Xavier knew they were going to arrive before nightfall. Now, his brain couldn’t push out his thoughts; he just wanted to see if Avalon was okay, and finally, after flying for a while, he could see the kingdom of Avalon from a distance, and his jaw dropped.

A big part of the wall was under construction as it had been broken all the way to the ground, even though it was a long way down, he could still see it since the wall was freaking large.

"I think there’s a war happening below," Star spoke as she began gliding downward. At first, Xavier couldn’t see the ground, and then he could see tiny dots moving around till he finally saw them.

An army of demons was currently attacking Avalon.
