Lucifer: Godless Reawakening-Chapter 245: If the world was ending...
It was early morning.
William was sitting on the bed, his back resting against the frame as he looked at the two people sleeping beside him. Nana had her head buried in Emma’s bosom, and the silver-haired woman held her tenderly as they slept soundly.
Seeing their innocent faces, William let out a quiet sigh. How far could he go to protect these two? Even he did not know.
But when he thought about last night, his heart grew heavy. Something was weighing on his lover. He was certain of it.
Over time, it had become easier for William to read Emma. There had been a time when she seemed like a cold statue, not only to him but to everyone around her. Unchanging, untouched by whatever happened around her.
Now, though, he noticed everything. The faint flinch, the subtle twitch of her brow, the way she chewed on her lower lip. He could tell when she was hiding something. What unsettled him was that whatever she was dealing with now, she could not share it with him.
Then it struck him. The only thing she could not speak about was his origin. It was no secret that before freeing him from the curse, Emma had heard certain things from the Shaman who made the liberation possible.
For some reason, she could not tell him about it. He never pressed her, knowing she would speak when the time was right.
But recently, she has discovered something more.
Last night, when she returned to the room, he had been awake. He watched her stand there for several minutes, doing nothing. Then she stepped closer and gently caressed his head, her fingers fidgeting. Without prying into her mind, he could still feel it clearly. She was deeply worried about him.
His fingers gently traced her forehead, tucking a few stray strands of hair behind her ear as he murmured under his breath, "What exactly caused this distrust, Emma? What is it that you cannot tell me?"
Shaking his head, he carefully rose from the bed.
He opened the window and looked outside. The sun lingered near the horizon, and a faint breeze brushed against his face. He glanced back, relieved to see that neither the wind nor the soft light had disturbed the girls.
Leaning against the windowsill, William took a slow breath, trying to steady himself.
"You look distressed." A voice drifted in from outside.
A bloodied figure hovered beside the window, his back resting against the wall.
William did not even glance at him. "You know exactly what the problem is. And I have a feeling you know what Emma discerned last night."
"Of course I know," Lamb replied calmly. "However, let me ask you this. What is the rush? Why can you not wait for those memories to return naturally, like the one you accessed recently?"
Yes, he had done that. By unlocking a spell, he had stumbled upon a past that did not belong to him.
However, he clenched his jaw. "I cannot keep pushing myself into a corner every time just to remember who I once was. That is foolish. And I am not patient enough for that," William muttered, a low growl slipping into his voice.
Turning to face Lamb, he continued, "Do you know how frustrating it is to feel like your entire existence is unwanted? To know that both heaven and hell are targeting you, yet you have no idea why? How am I supposed to prepare myself when I do not even know who my enemies are or what I did in the past to earn their wrath?"
It was irritating, to say the least. It felt as though many in this world knew the truth of his origin, yet the one person it mattered to most knew nothing about himself.
What had he been in the past that made his lover so shaken, so afraid to tell him the truth?
What had he done that a higher angel reacted to his power, and the residents of hell immediately moved to hunt him down?
"You know what? One of these days, I might just jump into a Death Sink and search for someone who can answer me. Because you and Emma clearly will not."
Silence stretched between them. William’s brows drew together, irritation radiating from him.
Then Lamb spoke. "Ask me. I will answer a few of your questions."
William blinked in surprise and turned toward him. "Are you sure?"
Lamb did not reply.
Not wanting to waste the chance, William asked at once, "Then tell me. What am I, or what was I in the past? Why do both sides despise me? And why can I channel both aether and nyx?"
Lamb remained silent for a moment, as if weighing his words. Then he spoke.
"You are the silence within chaos. Someone who stands on neither side. Someone who must look at everything from both perspectives. People believe angels are always right. They represent light, hope, and a brighter future. But you must see as a judge would. Do not walk the same path as others. Make your own decisions, and make them just."
William frowned. "Are you saying even angels can be evil?"
Lamb shook his head. "No one is free from emotion, William. Greed and envy are sins nurtured in every living being, whether angel or devil. But you must not succumb to them."
William scoffed. "I am no sage. When it comes to the people I love, I will become greedy. If a crisis comes, I will protect them above all else."
Lamb shook his head again. "As far as I can see into your distant future, you will not."
William’s frown deepened, but Lamb did not allow him to interrupt.
"You cherish those close to you. But there will come a time when you begin to lose your emotions in exchange for the absolute strength you obtain from me."
Shaking his head, he added, "And when that happens, you would forget about everyone. Every memory, every connection—you would feel nothing about it."
Turning to look at William, he added, "And the same goes for Emma. You would even forget about her."
Silence settled between them. It was clear Lamb did not want to speak of it, unwilling to reveal a future that was almost impossible to change.
Still, he could feel William’s emotions spiraling ever since his lover had begun hiding things from him.
That was why he had to say something. Not the entire truth, but enough to prepare him for what was coming. For what he would have to do. For what he would have to sacrifice in the distant future.
"I am scared..." William muttered. "I will forget about Emma. No...no...no, I am terrified of a future where that becomes real."
Lamb sighed. "You do not trust me, do you?"
William scoffed and lightly shook his head. "Not even a little. At least not about that. I know exactly what that girl means to me."
Lamb floated up and stopped right in front of him. "To reach the state where you can dominate the battlefield and save this world, you would have to let go of your emotions completely. And when that happens, you would have to let go of Emma as well."
"Bullshit," William shot back without a second of hesitation. "I would sacrifice the world itself if that is what it takes to keep Emma by my side."
Lamb fell completely silent.
For someone who never let emotion show on his face, he was genuinely taken aback by the conviction in those words.
Then, in a low voice, he said, "You do not understand. Everyone would die. Your friends. Even your father, the man you love so much."
William grinned. "If the old man hears that I damned the world to protect my girl, trust me, he would die with a smile."
Lamb shook his head. "I cannot believe how you can be so certain about someone you have only known for such a short time."
William let out a soft chuckle. "You do not need years with someone to fall dangerously in love. Emma is not someone I can live without."
He did not know where that certainty came from. Why did he love her this much? He had no answer. Lamb was right. Once, Emma had been just another name, someone he teased and cursed without thought. Six months ago, she had looked at him with pity, and he had looked back at her with disgust. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Then something changed.
It felt as though they had been walking on separate paths, far apart, yet bound by a single invisible thread. In an instant, that thread pulled tight, drawing them closer, wrapping around them until it formed a knot that refused to come undone.
Lamb then lowered his head and said, "I...fail to understand the connection you two share but I understand Emma’s fear."
William frowned, "What do you mean?"
Lamb responded calmly, "She was warned by the Shaman. She was told things which terrified her but not for the reason you believe. It terrified her because she thought it would make you leave her....so that she doesn’t have to suffer alongside you."
William’s eyes widened in shock and realisation
So...that was the reason why she had been hiding things from him?
Lamb drew closer and stopped just before his face.
Those golden eyes shone with something...unclear. Curiosity? Hope? Amusement? He couldn’t tell.
And then, his last words fell on his ears before the bloodied figure faded,
"Then show me...how you can go against our fate for the sake of your love."
