Lucifer: Godless Reawakening-Chapter 237: Pay the price
Bardy could tell that something was off. For some reason, both Brutus and his mother looked displeased.
It was early morning. He didn’t have breakfast since he couldn’t find any place that could be regarded as a dinning hall. And looking at them currently, he dare not interrupt them.
He was seated in the prayer hall, while the other two stood near the altar, speaking so quietly that not a single word reached him.
Brutus didn’t even glance at him when Bardy entered, signifying that whatever the cause was, it affected them significantly.
All Bardy could do was guess. Was it related to the situation outside? Or perhaps something about William? As far as he knew, William had helped a great deal last night. Then what was the cause? Another Death Sink?
Fiona might be a nun but the death of a few civilians surely wouldn’t have caused her to get mad at the soldiers or her son, right?
Or maybe it was because of Brutus’s underwhelming performance last night? It could be anything...
Just then, the two missing members of the team entered the prayer hall.
Fiona and Brutus turned to face them, making no effort to hide their displeasure.
The duo stopped in front of the mother and son. William made no move to release Emma’s hand as he openly stared back at them.
They did not even try to hide the fact that they had spent the night together. This was neither the academy nor the island where rules had to be strictly followed.
"You made a mistake," Fiona finally broke the silence, her tone grave. "You had a chance, Emma. A chance to become someone who could have changed things for the better. You could have become so much more, yet you chose to limit yourself."
Emma sighed. "If limiting myself means I get to spend my life with William, then I’m fine with it."
Brutus scoffed. "Oh? So you’re saying you’re fine being a burden on him for the rest of your life? Because as far as I remember, you always rely on him whenever danger arises."
This time, Emma did not respond.
William stepped forward, tilting his head slightly. "I remember hearing from someone that you actually respected Emma’s skills. Did I hear that wrong, or are you changing your stance because you’re salty?" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Brutus growled. "Stay within your boundaries. I don’t speak lies like some lowlifes." He barely stopped himself from adding the rest.
William let out a mocking chuckle. "Oh, really? Then why did you lie yesterday and say you couldn’t come to help Emma, even after sensing a ranked devil? Don’t tell me it was because you were fighting other devils. The moment a ranked devil appears, the Death Sink gets blocked to minor ones."
Brutus’s lips parted, but no words came out. His eyes widened slightly in shock.
On the other side, Bardy grimaced. So he noticed, huh?
In truth, what William said was right. When Bardy sensed such a massive surge of Nyx from the eastern side, he had been about to head there. He had nothing else to fight and decided to help Emma.
However, he was stopped by Brutus, who insisted that they should not interfere with the battle.
William grinned. "Was it because you wanted your mother to show off her skills so persuading Emma would become easier?"
Brutus clenched his fist. "Watch your tongue."
"Or what?" William replied with a smirk. "Gonna cry about it?"
And then... he exploded.
"Brutus, no!"
Before Fiona could stop him, Brutus launched a punch straight at William, only for it to be halted by something invisible just inches from William’s face.
Brutus growled as aether finally erupted around him like a raging storm. He forced his fist forward with everything he had. Yet, as if an endless gap separated his knuckles from that bastard’s face, he could not touch him at all.
William was on the verge of turning it into a full-blown battle. He had been itching to crush this bastard for a long time. But then Emma spoke impatiently, "Will, we need to leave. You remember, right? Nana?"
William let out a breath. Right. Their daughter.
He raised his hand and released a mental wave straight into Brutus’s mind.
Thud.
Brutus collapsed instantly, his body hitting the ground as his eyes turned blank.
Fiona heard the sound and knew, without needing to ask, that her son had fallen.
Bardy charged at William instantly. "Damn you!"
William, ever the considerate boyfriend, extended his hand and froze Bardy mid-air.
With a casual swat, he sent the boy flying, his body slamming hard into the wall. No dragged out battle.
Fiona rushed to her son’s side, trying to wake him, but Brutus showed no response.
William shook his head, disappointed by the sight of someone collapsing from nothing more than a minor mental wave.
He tightened his grip around Emma’s hand and walked past them.
They were just about to step out of the church when Fiona spoke again. "You have rejected God’s will, Emma. And one day, you will pay the price for it."
Emma’s brows knit together, but she refused to turn around.
Fiona continued, her voice rising. "You will return here on your knees, begging for the Almighty’s help. And that will be the moment when justice is served."
The two younger ones ignored her and stepped out of the church.
William glanced at his lover and asked, "Are you okay?"
Emma nodded, looking like her usual self. "Do you really think her words would affect me?" She shook her head. "I believe that whatever is written in fate will happen, no matter how much one tries to change it."
Curses? Begging for help? Emma knew none of that would work.
Was it because she was confident enough to believe nothing could trouble her?
No. Of course not.
It was because she knew what the future held, and that knowledge had made her resistant to such words.
The moment she freed William, she knew she had complicated things far beyond how they were meant to be, canonically.
But she did not give a damn.
William leaned closer and said, "Now that’s more like you."
Emma smiled briefly before adding, "Now let’s take the portal and head back home. Haah, I really can’t wait to see my precious."
William chuckled. "Same here. I wonder how she’ll react."
However, just as they were about to reach the exit of the town, someone called out,
"Wait a minute."
As the two of them turned, they found a familiar soldier making his way towards them.
