Chapter 82: Chapter 39: Caught Off Guard

On Christmas Day the next morning, Su Wan went to the Fu Mansion early to make up for yesterday’s lesson with Ye Fan. Fu Weiheng had prepared a violin for her at the Fu Mansion, so she didn’t have to carry one, making her journey light and easy.

Fu Weijin had gotten up early and was accompanying Ye Fan in the music room as she practiced the violin. No one was in the living room, but some sounds of cooking could be heard from the kitchen, likely Sister Lin preparing lunch.

Hearing the sound of the violin, she changed her shoes and went to the music room.

Ye Fan was practicing an etude while Fu Weijin leisurely flipped through a book on a recliner by the window.

Just as she reached the music room’s door, Ye Fan saw her and sweetly called out, "Auntie!"

Fu Weijin looked up at the sound, his face lighting up, "Wanwan, you’re here? You’re early today!"

Su Wan felt a bit shy from being called "Auntie" by Ye Fan, nodded slightly, and walked in, "Mm... I thought I’d come early to give Fanfan her lesson." As she spoke, she ruffled Ye Fan’s fluffy head, "It’s Christmas today, you could actually skip a week of lessons."

Fu Weijin set his book on the chair and stood up, "We can’t let her skip a week. Lately, Fanfan hasn’t been practicing very diligently. If she skips a week, she’ll lose focus even more."

Su Wan saw his point and nodded, setting down her bag, "Shall we start now?"

"Now?" Fu Weijin glanced at his watch and pondered, "It’s past eleven. Wanwan, do you have any plans today?"

Su Wan shook her head.

Fu Weijin: "Then how about after lunch?"

Su Wan: "Sure."

Fu Weijin smiled, "Neil is in the study; go call him down. I’ll check if lunch is ready in the kitchen."

Su Wan followed his words and went upstairs to the second floor. The study door was ajar, and she pushed it open gently. Scattered across the desk were dense sheets of sheet music, and a Stradivarius violin lay quietly on a chaise, with a black music stand beside it holding an old copy of Paganini’s 24 Caprices.

The study was a bit messy; she looked around. Though his phone was on the desk, the owner himself was not to be seen.

Su Wan was in no rush. She picked up the Paganini and flipped through it casually.

Every page of the book was covered in notes, each measure, each movement, and every sign indicating dynamics and emotional nuances were thoroughly detailed. Just then, she felt a tightness at her waist, as a pair of arms wrapped around her from behind, and a warm chest pressed against her back, filling her senses with a familiar crisp scent.

Su Wan instinctively turned her head, her soft lips brushing against the face of Fu Weiheng.

"When did you arrive?" Fu Weiheng eased the grip of his arms and leaned forward slightly, pulling her closer.

Su Wan let out a soft laugh, "Not long ago."

Fu Weiheng straightened up, turned her around in his arms, and dropped a light kiss on her lips, "Why didn’t you wait for me to pick you up?"

Su Wan replied straightforwardly, "Didn’t want to trouble you."

Noticing her cold hands, he furrowed his brow, "Why are your hands so cold?"

Su Wan retracted her hands and rubbed them together, "It’s quite cold today."

Fu Weiheng: "I’ll get you a cup of hot water."

Su Wan nodded in agreement. As he turned to go into the inner tea room, she picked up the scattered sheets of music on the desk and studied them.

The phone on the desk suddenly buzzed with a call. Glancing at the screen, she saw the caller ID "Ms. Mu." She called out towards the tea room, "Neil, your phone is ringing."

Fu Weiheng had just finished boiling the hot water. The kettle clicked off with a quiet thud, and bubbles still surfaced. He was calmly rinsing a cup and replied, "Could you answer it for me?"

Su Wan hesitated for a moment, set down the sheet music, picked up the phone, and answered it gently, "Hello, this is Fu Weiheng’s phone. He’s not available to take the call right now."

There was a pause on the other end, followed by a delighted female voice, "Is this Wanwan?"

Su Wan was taken aback, "And you are...?"

The voice, carrying a smile, replied, "I’m Neil’s mother."

Su Wan: "..."

Her body stiffened, and she suddenly became too nervous to speak smoothly, "Ah... Hello, Auntie."

Mu Qing laughed, her voice gentle and flowing like a mountain stream, "I often hear Weijin mention you. Next month, Neil’s father and I are returning to the country. Join us for a meal then."

Su Wan was flustered. Was she going to meet the parents already...?

At that moment, Fu Weiheng came out with the hot water. She heard the sound and quickly looked back at him. Pointing to the phone, she mouthed silently, "Your mom."

"Be careful, it’s hot." He handed her the water as he calmly took the phone, "Mom..."

Su Wan took the water from his hand and turned awkwardly, escaping to the sofa.

Whatever was said on the other end was unknown to Su Wan. She only saw Fu Weiheng glance at her as he spoke with a faint smile, "Mm, she’s a bit shy. I’ll introduce you to her when you’re back in the country..."

Su Wan clasped the warm cup, shyly lowering her head as she sipped.

After Fu Weiheng hung up, he sat down beside her, "My parents are returning next month. Shall we have a meal together?"

The inevitable always comes. Su Wan knew she couldn’t decline, so she simply responded with an "Oh" and agreed.
