Love letters are not allowed in the exorcism notebook!-Chapter 140: The Unbearable Heaviness of Life
If there really were ghosts in this world, what would they be doing normally?
When writing horror fiction, one generally needs to consider this question. Ghosts are merely tools under the author’s pen, used to create scares, nothing else matters.
It’s like writing detective fiction, where to uphold what’s called "classic detective" style, one even needs to shackle oneself, purposely creating an isolated space cut off from the outside world.
People say that during festivals one should burn paper offerings for deceased relatives, but from ancient times to now, there’s never been a clear standard to tell everyone exactly how much to burn, or if it’s enough.
The first time the ghost saw Wang Yunxiao, the ghost was also panicked.
The young girl had delicate, tender skin and a pretty, quiet appearance, which could easily provoke the urge to bully her.
She was wearing a plain, thin dress, her short sleeves revealing snow-white arms, and her long black hair covered her eyes as she sat motionless on the embroidered bed.
Someone was moving outside the door.
The footsteps were heavy, as if dragging something. Even through the door one could hear the heavy breathing and the stench of alcohol-induced vomit.
The young girl hugged her legs, hiding in the corner of the embroidered bed, shivering.
Wang Yunxiao stood up and, under her frightened gaze, pushed open the door.
There was no one outside.
Outside the door were the bright classrooms of the school, with desks neatly arranged.
A door’s breadth apart, outside was Heaven, inside was Hell.
By the time Wang Yunxiao turned his head back, the young girl had vanished.
Something silently fell onto his shoulder.
The embroidered bed, the classroom—in the blink of an eye, all had disappeared.
He was left in pitch darkness where he could not see his hand in front of his face, with only the sound of water dripping from a tap in the darkness.
A pair of cold, small hands reached out from behind him and tightly grasped his neck.
Ghosts do not possess complete memories.
Nurse Liu had specifically taught everyone in class about the origins of fierce ghosts.
Death extinguishes life as a lamp goes out; all of earthly existence becomes past smoke, and after death, only the deepest obsessions of the lost souls remain.
Only in cases of unjust, grievous deaths do the grudges of the deceased linger unrelieved, causing the lost souls to morph into fierce ghosts.
She did not want to die, but the sudden rumors overwhelmed her fragile psyche.
Those living in Heaven cannot comprehend the terror and despair of Hell.
After experiencing the warm sunlight of Heaven, she didn’t want to return to the hellish den for even a second.
Absolutely not, even if it meant death!
But this world is so cruel; even if you stand still, there are people more than willing to push you back into the mire and then laugh at your disgrace.
They think it’s just a joke.
But for her, this joke was too cruel, too malicious.
Wang Yunxiao stood still, letting her use all her strength to tightly strangle his neck.
Her strength was still too weak; after all, she was just a newborn fierce ghost, not yet having had the chance to grow.
And the target of her vengeance was not a frail ordinary mortal.
"Zhou Qing."
As soon as Wang Yunxiao spoke, her hands trembled and could no longer exert any strength.
When Wang Yunxiao turned around, the child had already disappeared.
Look at your courage!
Wang Yunxiao was still thinking whether he should pretend to be scared by her. After all, according to Nurse Liu’s lecture, fierce ghosts feed on the fear of the living and grow to a certain stage before they can devour their flesh.
Some particularly powerful fierce ghosts can skip this step and immediately create horrific disasters upon their emergence.
But this child, she was simply too weak.
If it hadn’t been for Little Gourd treating her soul like a living one even though it was nearly lost, she might not even have been qualified to become a Fierce Ghost.
Wang Yunxiao yawned, opened his eyes, and woke from his dream.
He vaguely heard a blood-curdling scream coming from the next dorm room, "Ah—!"
This shout woke all the brothers in the dorm.
Matuan opened his eyes, sat up, and wiped the drool from the corner of his mouth, "Hey, did you guys see? That girl was damn good-looking! Even prettier than Little Gourd..."
His brother Youbing stared at him gloomily, "I’ll make sure to pass that comment on to Little Gourd."
"Damn it... I was just kidding!"
While they were chatting, they heard another howl from the corridor.
They weren’t bothered by it, but tonight, many people would repeatedly wake up from nightmares of a female ghost claiming lives.
Wang Yunxiao looked out the window and saw two security guards at the school gate, each holding a Wolf Fang Club, taking alternate swings as if they were pounding rice cake, but what that rice cake was no one could tell.
The night was destined not to be peaceful.
"Wang Yunxiao."
Suddenly hearing his name called, it took Wang Yunxiao a moment to snap out of it.
But he immediately tensed up as the voice had come directly into his mind, and it was a woman’s voice he didn’t recognize.
"Wang Yunxiao, can you hear me?"
Wang Yunxiao quickly raised his hand, signaling his brothers to shut up and keep quiet while he asked loudly, "I can hear you, who are you?"
"This is a call from the Nantong District Police Bureau Special Service Squad. You have ten minutes to prepare, and then you’ll enter the scene."
This time, the unfamiliar female voice appeared in everyone’s mind simultaneously.
Matuan was so startled that he jumped up and banged his forehead on the upper bunk bed frame, "Bro, didn’t we use fake names on the contact list? How does she manage to call directly to me?"
Goddammit, a call!
Indeed, it was an apt description.
"Stop talking, hurry up and get dressed, grab your gear!"
Wang Yunxiao had anticipated that they might have to work overtime tonight, but he hadn’t expected it to be this kind of overtime, where the client was like a Grim Reaper, sending a call straight into your brain, eliminating the option of leaving it unread.
With only ten minutes to prepare, fortunately, they were ready; else, what could they have done?
Indeed, this overtime pay was hard to earn.
In comparison, the ghost at their school seemed so much more adorable.
Wang Yunxiao cursed as he put on the Soft armor, suddenly remembering that their weapons were still at the police station. Was there enough time to retrieve them in ten minutes?
That was obviously impossible.
Luckily, they had backups.
Not many, but enough, although surely not as substantial as at the police station.
Although Qiao Hongyi had promised them they could use guns, Wang Yunxiao didn’t dare let his brothers go there empty-handed.
Making extra preparations never hurt anyone.
Wang Yunxiao took the keys and unlocked the air-raid shelter doorway, only taking a Swallow Wing Blade and strapping it to his waist.
He didn’t have such high requirements for weapons. Good gear could be left for his brothers; he just needed a blade in his hand.
Under ideal conditions, of course, the better equipped, the better.
Under less ideal conditions, even with just a kitchen knife in hand, he was confident he could make it from the South Heavenly Gate to Penglai East Road.
"Is everyone here? Count off!"
"1! 2! 3..."
"11! 12... 13..."
Wang Yunxiao suddenly turned around, looking at the three girls huddled at the back.
