Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 237: "I Won’t Leave You Again This Time.
Sherry Walsh crossed her arms and gave a slight shrug. "You know what I do for a living. I’ve seen this play out a hundred times."
Only then did Jane Jenkins get a proper look at Sherry Walsh.
Sherry Walsh had a blunt, medium-short haircut. The formal attire she’d chosen for the day was a pair of sharp, high-waisted trousers. Her top was a rather sexy bustier, though much of it was covered by a cropped blazer.
In both style and personality, she seemed to be Jane’s complete opposite. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
She looked like she had a bad temper.
Before Jane Jenkins could speak, Sherry Walsh pulled a business card from her pocket and handed it over.
"This is..."
Jane Jenkins looked down at the card in her hand, a little confused.
Sherry Walsh smiled. "I’m a divorce lawyer, and I’m an excellent judge of character. If you marry this Lawyer Sterling here, you’ll be getting a divorce sooner or later. He’s a devious man. A normal person would be put through the wringer trying to divorce him. You’ll need an experienced, professional lawyer."
She pointed a finger at herself. "Like me."
Jane Jenkins went pale with anger.
Noah Sterling watched everything unfold calmly, then nodded in agreement. "I can guarantee that this Lawyer Walsh is indeed an excellent divorce lawyer. If you get divorced again, you should hire her. But it won’t be from a marriage to me."
Jane Jenkins shoved the business card back at Sherry Walsh.
She looked at Noah Sterling. "You used to say that we knew each other best, that we were perfect for each other. I believe that people who are meant to be will always find their way back to one another. I know I was wrong, and I won’t leave you again this time."
Sherry Walsh was enjoying the drama up close. There was no way she was moving an inch.
Jane Jenkins’s friend couldn’t bear to watch any longer and chimed in, "The money you gave Jane back then was just enough for her tuition and rent. She had to eat, too! It’s perfectly normal to want a more comfortable life."
"Yes, everyone should be able to meet their basic needs first." Noah Sterling nodded, not arguing the point at all.
But Sherry Walsh read between the lines. "So, after all that, it turns out Lawyer Sterling was the one paying for this young lady’s tuition?"
Jane Jenkins’s face flushed with embarrassment.
No matter how you spun it, what she had done was completely immoral.
Back then, when she was pursuing her dream of music, Noah Sterling had gone against his family’s wishes and given her all his savings so she could study abroad.
To be able to afford her tuition, he had spent his undergraduate years scrambling for clients and taking on cases.
He transferred almost every penny he earned to her.
In reality, the money was enough to live on, but her classmates were all from wealthy families.
They drove luxury cars and lived in mansions.
A sense of inadequacy grew inside her, and she soon got involved with an older man she met at a bar.
At first, she didn’t tell Noah Sterling. It wasn’t until he flew abroad to see her that everything came to light, and the two of them broke up.
Sherry Walsh immediately offered her professional opinion. "In that case, I’d advise you to stay far away from Lawyer Sterling. Under current law, his financial support could be considered a gift conditional upon marriage. Since you cheated, he could sue to have all that money returned, if he wanted to."
’Honestly, Noah Sterling probably isn’t classless enough to actually do that,’ Sherry Walsh thought. ’I just hadn’t expected this Miss Jenkins to be so brazenly shameless. If it were me, if I had taken someone’s money for my education only to cheat on them, I’d spend the rest of my life avoiding them.’
Jane Jenkins looked at Noah Sterling. "Noah, if you need this money, I can give it to you."
’There’s no way a man would actually ask for it back,’ she thought.
A small smile touched Noah Sterling’s lips. "Sure. My bank account number hasn’t changed. Figure out how much it is and transfer it to me when you’re ready."
"..."
The room fell silent.
Sherry Walsh quietly studied Jane Jenkins’s face.
In her years as a divorce lawyer, she had represented not only female clients but male ones, too.
Cheaters and liars all had the same look on their faces.
’That’s the face of someone who has no intention of paying the money back.’
Jane Jenkins bit her lip, finally relenting after a long moment. "Okay. Let’s add each other on WeChat. I’ll contact you if I have any questions about the total."
"No need," Noah Sterling refused. "Just send whatever you calculate it to be."
Jane Jenkins’s friend couldn’t take it anymore. "Noah Sterling, what kind of man are you, demanding back money you gave as a gift? Jane was right to break up with you back then."
Noah Sterling explained calmly, "I’m not demanding it back. She offered to return it to me. The two situations are entirely different."
Noah Sterling’s family was middle-class, and he’d had a decent amount of savings and living expenses to begin with.
On top of that, he had taken on several difficult lawsuits in college, quickly making a name for himself and earning quite a bit of money.
Over those few years, he had sent Jane Jenkins at least two million.
There was no way Jane Jenkins could pay back that kind of money. She only agreed in an attempt to win back Noah Sterling’s favor and to maintain her own image.
"Fine, I get it. I’ll pay you back as soon as I’ve calculated the total."
With a look of utter devastation, Jane Jenkins turned to leave, her body even swaying slightly.
Her friend shot Noah Sterling a disgruntled look before following Jane out.
Having watched the whole show, Sherry Walsh was about to leave when her phone rang.
It was her dear old dad.
She didn’t answer right away. Instead, she scanned the area and immediately spotted him.
Standing next to her dad was a man whose back was turned to her, so she couldn’t see his face.
But from her angle, she could see the man was balding.
The call went unanswered for a minute before disconnecting, only to start ringing again moments later.
Sherry Walsh took a deep breath before finally answering the call.
Mr. Walsh got straight to the point. "Didn’t you just see me? Get over here. I want to introduce you to someone. If you two hit it off, you can see where it goes."
Sherry Walsh’s parents were usually quite open-minded and didn’t really pressure her about getting married.
But after she turned thirty this year, the old couple had been swayed by the constant nagging of others and were finally getting antsy.
"I’m not coming," Sherry Walsh refused flatly. "I’m not interested. Didn’t you see he’s already balding? The balding gene is hereditary. My kids will end up bald. I refuse!"
"You’re already thirty! I’m not trying to set you up for failure. The young man is genuinely a good guy. Just come over and chat with him. Hurry up!"
"I said I’m not going! So what if I’m thirty? It’s not like I’m living off his family’s charity. Why should I have to go over and chat with him?"
"Sherry Walsh, are you coming or not!"
Sherry Walsh could tell her dad was genuinely angry this time.
She glanced again in her father’s direction and saw the old man shooting daggers at her with his eyes.
But then she looked back at the balding man in the suit, whose back view seemed rather stout, and she just couldn’t bring herself to go over.
It wasn’t that she didn’t know how to refuse people; it was that she had a sharp tongue and was afraid of offending her dad’s friend.
Sherry Walsh sighed and said in a wheedling tone, "Dad~"
Mr. Walsh wasn’t falling for it. "Don’t call me ’Dad’ if you’re not coming over."
Sherry Walsh immediately changed her tune. "Alright then, Uncle, but I..."
Before she could finish, Mr. Walsh had already hung up.
Sherry Walsh knew her dad was coming to settle the score. She looked left and right, about to find a place to hide...
"Your dad forcing you into a blind date? I have a great idea, want to hear it?"
Noah Sterling, who had been standing by and listening to the entire conversation, finally spoke up.
Sherry Walsh glanced toward her father, who was exchanging pleasantries with someone but looked like he was about to charge over and grab her any second.
She hesitated for a moment, then grabbed the sleeve of Noah Sterling’s suit. "First, find me a place to hide. We’ll talk after that."
She started pulling Noah Sterling toward the exit, but before they had taken two steps, the man behind her said, "Tell your father that you and I are secretly dating, and that you haven’t made it public because the relationship isn’t stable yet."
