Miles’s voice was laced with obvious irritation and aggression.

It was no different from how he’d always treated her.

"There’s no need. Part of that money was to pay back the Harrington family, and the other part was an engagement gift. There’s no reason for me to take it back."

Rory stood at the door to her room.

She had one hand rested on the doorframe, the other on the doorknob, ready to retreat inside and shut the door at a moment’s notice.

The main hallway light was off, with only a few small lights lit.

The dim light from above outlined the man’s silhouette.

Miles was nearly six feet tall and handsome enough.

At least, Rory had once thought he was handsome.

But now, his face seemed to have lost all its appeal to her. She didn’t even have the desire to spare it a second glance.

"Rory, how could I possibly take your money?" Miles took two steps toward her, lowered his eyes to look at her. "Besides... are you really going to stand by and watch me get engaged to another woman?"

As he drew closer, the strong stench of alcohol on him saturated the air.

For a very long time, Rory had truly believed she would one day marry Miles.

But now, he was getting engaged to someone else.

And she really wasn’t as heartbroken as she had expected to be.

"Young Master Harrison, when I loved you, you were my entire world, and I gave you my all." Rory lowered her gaze. "But the moment I decided to let go, I let go completely."

She looked at him. "My congratulations to you and Miss Shaw were sincere. I..."

"Rory Linden!" Miles cut her off. "Cut the self-righteous crap! You’ve been courting me for more than a decade. I refuse to believe you could get over me this fast."

The man’s voice echoed down the corridor.

It drowned out the sound of another person’s footsteps coming up the stairs.

"Are you disappointed, Young Master Harrison? Disappointed that the woman who used to follow you everywhere, who naively believed you were ’just sleeping’ with other women when you got drunk, who loved and accepted you unconditionally... disappointed that she didn’t cry or throw a fit when she found out you were engaged? That she even gave you a gift?"

Rory was struck by how truly immature Miles was.

He was a twenty-six-year-old man and he was hardly any different from when they were in school.

Miles sneered. "I know what you’re really hung up on. After all these years by my side... I’ve never done with you what I’ve done with other women, have I?"

Before the mocking words had even faded, his hand was already clamping down on her slender waist.

His other hand seized the wrist of the hand she had on the doorknob.

"Miles Harrison! What are you doing!"

Rory panicked instantly!

She struggled with all her might!

But the difference in strength between a man and a woman was innate.

She couldn’t push him away at all!

"Rory, after tonight... if you just say the word, I’ll call off the engagement..."

Miles held her, trying to push his way into the room...

"Help! Help!" Rory had no time to think, crying out on pure instinct. "Sean Harrison, save me!"

It was like magic.

The instant she cried out his name, she saw a tall figure striding quickly toward them out of the corner of her eye.

Before she could even react, the man grabbed Miles shoulder with one hand. The moment he’d pulled them apart, a fist slammed into the side of Miles’s face!

The force of the blow gusted past Rory’s cheek, with its speed and power extremely strong.

"AGH, fuck!" Miles cried out in pain while clutching his face. He looked up, ready to curse, but his expression froze. "Un... Uncle?"

Sean ripped the cufflinks from his sleeves and grabbed Miles by the collar.

Another fist landed.

The corner of Miles’ mouth was instantly bruised.

He staggered back a couple of steps, and before he could regain his footing, Sean struck him again.

Only when Miles was about to collapse did Sean grab his collar, haul him against the wall, and ask with a frigid expression, "Are you sober now?"

Rory stood frozen to the side.

The dim, flickering light traced the man’s silhouette.

Sean’s face had no expression, but his jaw was clenched tight, and his dark eyes held a terrifying chill.

She couldn’t see him clearly, but the man seemed absolutely furious.

Miles tried to struggle, but when he found he couldn’t move, he hastily nodded. "Yes, I’m sober. I’m sober."

Sean’s fist remained tightly clenched. He took two deep breaths, then grabbed Miles by the collar and dragged him in front of Rory. "Apologize."

Miles raised his eyes to Rory, who was standing inside her room.

Her hair was slightly disheveled, and she was clearly still shaken.

They had been together for so many years.

He’d almost never seen Rory like this.

Before Miles Harrison could speak...

"What’s going on? What happened?"

Evelyn came running over in her slippers.

When she saw the marks on Miles’ face, she was clearly horrified. She rushed over to shield her son, her eyes blazing with fury as she glared at Sean. "Sean Harrison, are you insane! How dare you hit my son!"

Sean’s face was cold. "Why don’t you ask your son what he did."

"It doesn’t matter what he did! It’s not your place to lay a hand on him!"

Evelyn’s eyes filled with anguish as she reached out to touch the corner of Miles’ mouth.

"Hiss..."

Miles sucked in a sharp breath.

Evelyn had never so much as laid a hand on Miles his entire life. Seeing him beaten like this, her eyes reddened with distress.

She screamed at Sean, "Sean Harrison, what is wrong with you! First, you arrange Miles’s engagement behind our backs, and now you beat him! Do you think our branch of the family is an eyesore? Don’t you forget, your mother was just the second wife! You have no right to act so high and mighty in the Harrington family!"

"Mom..."

"Don’t you worry. I will handle this for you. I’m calling your father right now!"

Evelyn fumbled in her pockets, only to realize she didn’t have her phone.

She then turned to Rory. "Rory, let me borrow your phone."

"Auntie Irving." Rory didn’t move from her spot in the doorway. "Miles just tried to rape me. If anyone’s going to make a call, it’ll be me calling the police."

"Wh-what?" Evelyn was stunned. "How could Miles do something like that? Miles knows where to draw the line."

Miles stared intently at Rory.

Her panicked, frightened state was inexplicably attractive to him.

He admitted it bluntly. "Yes, I was trying to sleep with Rory. And I’m planning to call off the engagement with Lucy Shaw. If I have to marry someone, I only want to marry Rory."

A flicker of delight crossed Evelyn’s face.

"I don’t want to marry you." Rory’s voice was perfectly calm. She looked at Evelyn. "Auntie Irving, I’ll be moving out tomorrow after my surgery. Thank you for taking care of me all these years. In the future... we should probably avoid seeing each other. After all, I’m a doctor. It’s generally not a good sign if you have to see me too often."

"Rory."

"Young Master Harrison, you should go to a hospital and get those cuts looked at." Rory cut Miles off. "If you stay here any longer, I’m calling the police right now to come and collect evidence."

Evelyn truly hadn’t expected her son to do something so foolish.

Terrified that Rory would actually call the police, she had no choice but to lead her son away.

After the mother and son had left, Sean, who had been standing by the wall the whole time, shifted his right arm slightly, a flicker of pain crossing his tense face.

Only then did Rory remember that his right arm had been injured!

His wound must have been stitched up. Those punches were so powerful, the stitches must have torn open!

"Mr. Harrison, please wait a moment." Rory disappeared into her room and came back out with cotton swabs, gauze, and antiseptic. "I’ll walk you to your room and take a look at your injury."

Sean lowered his gaze, and his eyes swept over the slightly loose collar of her loungewear. He uttered three words. "Get changed first."
