Chapter 80: Not appropriate to hear something so ... explicit.

"I —"

Adelyn had just begun to speak when she paused at his words. Slightly dumbfounded, she tilted her head and asked, "Huh?"

However, Dylan’s expression didn’t change. His gaze lingered on her for a moment before he repeated calmly, "What did I do to upset you, Ms. Grace?"

She had no idea where that was coming from.

Still, choosing the safer route, she replied, "It seems there’s some misunderstanding, Mr. Warren. I’m not upset. And with you ..." she clicked her tongue lightly and shook her head, "definitely not."

Could she even afford to be upset with him?

"Then why do I feel like you’re deliberately trying to avoid me?" Dylan asked with ease. Yet beneath that calm tone, there was something else —subtle, but unmistakably pressuring.

"Didn’t you say you had feelings for me ... something you couldn’t run away from, just nights ago?"

Her breath hitched.

She knew what he was referring to.

But she didn’t know how to respond.

She had heard before that lies always came back to bite —but she hadn’t expected it to happen this soon.

"Ms. Grace, I’m not some casual man who goes around having one-night stands with —"

Before he could finish his words, Adelyn abruptly stood and pressed her hand against his lips, stopping him.

Her face flushed instantly, her eyes widening in shock —as if she hadn’t expected him to mention it so casually like that. That too, without noting who else was around them.

"Mr. Warren, we still have a child here," she said helplessly, lowering her voice. "It’s not appropriate for her to hear something so explicit."

She quickly turned her head to Eira to check.

And as expected, the girl was looking at her with clear confusion.

If Eira asked anything right now, she wouldn’t even know how to explain.

Knowing that, she didn’t leave her the opportunity.

Looking away from her, she turned back to Dylan —only to freeze the next moment.

Her hand was still pressed against his lips.

And he hadn’t moved. Not even a little.

Even though her intention had just been to stop him from speaking and nothing intimate, it somehow felt that way now.

Her face deepened in color as she quickly withdrew her hand and sat back down.

Avoiding his gaze, she tried to explain, "Mr. Warren, as I said, nor have I ever considered you as a casual person."

She paused, then finally looked up at him.

His eyes were still on her —like they had never left.

It made her a little nervous, but she forced herself to remain composed.

"You do make my heart race in a strange way, and I can’t deny what happened between us. But ..."

"But?" Dylan cut in, right when she might have spoken the truth.

A flicker of doubt crossed her eyes.

"But ... I don’t know what gave you that impression. I never intended to make you think that way."

She changed her words.

It felt natural to her because she thought it was her who did that —but she didn’t realize, she was intentionally made to reconsider her words.

Dylan let his gaze linger on her before he spoke, "You were going to refuse me. Why?"

Adelyn was stunned for a second.

She was.

But how did he know?

She couldn’t have been so obvious, could she?

She could have lied easily, but she chose not to for obvious reasons.

"I was," she admitted, then quickly added, "but it wasn’t because of what you think."

"Then?"

Adelyn looked at him, feeling conflicted. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

One part of her wanted to end this quickly.

But another urged her to be careful —to not offend him.

And slowly, under his gaze, she felt herself leaning toward caution.

Not because she was afraid ...

But because she knew she was partly or more responsible for everything between them.

If she hadn’t walked into his room that night —if she hadn’t done what she did —they might never have crossed paths at all.

So, even if wrong, she was the one who was, in a way, wronging him by involving him audaciously in her lies ... one after the other.

"I just didn’t want to trouble you," she said finally. "After all, you must be much busier than I am."

It was the safest excuse she could find.

But the next moment —

Her breath caught at his response.

"You don’t need to be so careful around me," he said evenly. "It’s not a trouble. And even if it were ... you have every right to trouble me."

Adelyn was taken aback.

Not knowing how else to respond, she simply nodded.

"Then ... I’ll follow your suggestion," she said, pulling her lips in a simple, polite smile. "Once we’re done with breakfast, I’ll get ready. You can drive me to the audition venue."

Dylan nodded.

Eira, who had been silent the entire time, suddenly looked up and asked, "Aunt Ade-lyn ... will you be coming with us?"

Adelyn turned to her and nodded.

The girl brightened instantly.

Soon after, they finished breakfast.

Adelyn carried the utensils to the sink before heading towards her room.

"Mr. Warren, I’ll go get ready. You can take your time to change as well."

Dylan gave a small nod.

Taking Eira’s hand, she led her along.

———

When they stepped out again, Eira had changed back into her previous dress, while Adelyn wore something simple and comfortable —not striking, yet effortlessly elegant.

"Aunt Ade-lyn, you look pretty," Eira said, admiration shining in her eyes.

Adelyn smiled warmly. "You too, baby."

"You’re ready."

Dylan’s voice cut in. And she turned toward him —only to pause.

A flicker of confusion crossed her face.

"Mr. Warren ... you haven’t changed yet?"

"No need," he said, rising to his feet.

She blinked.

No need?

Was he suggesting he would go out wearing her clothes?

Before she could even process it, he spoke again—

"Let’s go."

And just like that, he turned to leave, once again leaving her momentarily speechless.

He was steadily erasing every trace of awkwardness between them.

Was it intentional?

Or simply a coincidence?
