Lord of Ascension: The Birth of Chaos-Chapter 67 A Special Dragon Egg
The servant proceeded to press her palm to the egg, her eyes fluttering close as soft pink mana wrapped around them. It flowed gently at first, wrapping around the shell like silk. For a moment, nothing happened.
Scarlet shifted uneasily beside Kaelith. "I don’t think..."
"Quiet," Kaelith muttered, his eyes glued to the egg. He folded his hands behind his back, and his expression remained unreadable.
Scarlet glanced at him, but decided to keep his mouth shut.
A faint hum vibrated through the room, and the pink mana illuminated the room.
The shell of the egg shimmered, its black surface glowing soft gold. A sudden crackle of energy snapped through the air, and the servant’s breath hitched. She tried to pull away, but her hand remained stuck to the egg.
Her eyes flew open as realization dawned on her. "My prince...! Something’s wrong..." Her voice broke into a gasp.
The mana flowing from her hand grew frantic, it was no longer gentle. It poured out in maddening uncontrollable bursts, as if the egg was ripping it from her. Her body trembled violently.
"Brother, what’s happening?" Scarlet stood up, alarm flashing in his eyes.
Kaelith didn’t move. "We’re learning," he said simply. ’So this is how it is? This dragon egg might be more special than I thought.’
The servant screamed. Her knees buckled as her skin began to pale, the pink glow fading into sickly grey. Her veins darkened, spiderwebbing up her arms and neck as the egg devoured every drop of her mana and life force.
Her body caved inward, her cheeks sinking, and her eyes stretched wide in terror.
"No...please... save me!..." Her voice screeched in an inhuman tone.
The Mana swirled violently before vanishing into the egg. She screamed as the last straw of her life slipped out of her grasp.
Then she crumpled forward. The room fell quiet again.
The egg sat untouched on the table, its shell now shimmering faintly with a golden glow.
The servant’s body lay slumped beside it, shriveled and dry like a withered husk. Her robes sagged over her collapsed frame, her brittle bones barely holding together her hollow form. Her mouth was open in her sunken state. The horror in her face was still visible.
Scarlet took a step back, hand covering his mouth. "Gods..."
Kaelith walked forward, crouched beside the body, and gently pried her hand off the egg.
"I thought so," he murmured, more to himself. He stood and stared at the egg, his gaze calculating.
"She wasn’t even close to awakening it," he said coldly. "And yet, it still drained her dry."
Scarlet’s voice was shaky. "So that’s why you didn’t use your mana... What the hell is this dragon egg?"
"This is her punishment for eavesdropping on us," Kaelith replied.
He looked down at the egg once more, lips curving faintly. "You’re hungry, aren’t you?"
Kaelith straightened, brushing off invisible dust from his sleeve. The room smelled of a burnt corpse. He stepped past the shriveled corpse without flinching, picking up the egg and holding it close to his chest.
Its surface was no longer cold, a gentle heat pulsed from it.
Scarlet backed further away, his face pale. "It’s... feeding off us."
Kaelith glanced at him. "No. It’s learning. And besides there is nothing you should worry about, after all, you don’t have magic." His eyes moved back to the dragon egg. ’I have found my perfect companion, you and I will let chaos rain in this world... oh my precious.’ A flicker of madness crossed his eyes.
It was so fast that Scarlet missed it.
Kaelith set the egg gently on top of the table. "That woman was weak, and her mana was sweet, and shallow. That’s why it devoured it so fast."
"You knew that would happen." Scarlet’s voice was low, almost accusing.
Kaelith didn’t deny it. "Of course."
"You used her as bait."
Kaelith looked over his shoulder. "You’re going to need thicker skin if you plan to survive the North... And if you want to change your fate."
The egg pulsed again, a dull glow washing across its shell like a heartbeat. Kaelith’s gaze lingered on it. "Oh, where were we before the interruption? So whatever you plan to do to make the Emperor lock us away for a month, tomorrow is the day."
Scarlet clenched his fist tightly as he stared at the servant’s corpse. "Sure. But aren’t they going to notice that she has gone missing? If she is a servant of Lady Artherine which I believe she is. Then they are not going to sit quietly about it."
"Let’s move her out of my room. She stinks like hell." Kaelith clicked his tongue.
"Are you not listening to what I am saying?" Scarlet was stunned at his indifference.
"I heard you, Scarlet, that is why we are going to make it look like someone else did it, if that would be understandable for your small brain."
Scarlet huffed at him. "You could have just said so. Now you are making me look like a bad person."
"Aren’t you a bad person?" Kaelith asked dryly.
Scarlet scoffed. "How can you call someone as pretty as me a bad person? I’m too pretty to be bad."
"You are delusional."
"And you are just jealous." Scarlet fired back.
"Shut up Scarlet, or I’ll shut you up. Grab her legs." Kaelith stood with his face blank and his cold voice sent shivers down Scarlet’s spine.
"But I can’t use my pretty hand to touch something as disgusting as this." Scarlet covered his nose, his face scrunched up in disgust.
Kaelith stared daggers at him. "I’m going to open the portal now, don’t keep me waiting."
"But you haven’t mastered how to open a portal yet." Scarlet’s voice rose in alarm.
Kaelith gave him a cold glare.
"Fine, I’ll do it." He made a disgusted face. "But I can’t touch her with my bare hands."
"Scarlet!"
"Borrow me your gloves, you can get a new pair." He blinked innocently at Kaelith.
’Burn him... Burn this good for nothing and save yourself from future trouble.’ Kaelith muttered inside his head.
Kaelith didn’t answer. He pulled a pair of gloves from his wardrobe with slow precision, tossed them at Scarlet, and turned to the wall. His fingers traced the edge of the air, and a shimmer of light danced beneath his touch.
Scarlet shoved the gloves on and crouched beside the corpse. "I swear if she leaks something on me, I’ll cry."
"And I’ll make sure I seal those lips of yours," Kaelith muttered, focused on the forming portal.
Scarlet gagged as he grabbed the corpse’s brittle ankles. "Ugh... her skin is flaking off..."
Kaelith didn’t turn. "Try not to drop her. Or you’ll be the one to clean it off."
Scarlet shot him a glare, dragging the dried husk across the floor. "Where are we dumping her?"
"Lady Artherine’s garden." Kaelith’s voice was calm.
"Lovely," Scarlet muttered.
The portal glowed brighter, revealing a garden with beautiful flowers... deadly flowers.
Scarlet paused. "What if someone sees us?"
Kaelith tilted his head. "Then we kill them."
Scarlet stared at him. "You really are insane."
Kaelith raised a brow. "And you really are slow."
Scarlet held her legs and pulled her towards the portal. "Aren’t you going to help me?"
"No."
