Lord of Ascension: The Birth of Chaos-Chapter 64 Suspicion
Twigs snapped under the approaching boots. The forest held its breath watching as the figure approached the wrecked carriage. With one swift movement of its sword, the carriage split into two.
However, a golden box remained untouched. The figure carried the box, before vanishing in the blanket of the night without looking back.
....
The mountain was buried in snow, with icy winds sweeping down its sides. Every gust kicked up the snow, making it hard to see more than a few feet ahead. The vast area was covered in snow like white sheets.
The figure blurred through the snowy land, its clothes a clear contrast to the background. The figure climbed up the mountain, then they got to a tiny path on the mountain. The figure walked on it pressing itself on the wall, shielding its face from the blisters.
The figure got to a wider and flatter surface. A door made of rock lies ahead. The figure took a dart and placed it on the carved mark on the door. The door creaked open.
Without wasting any time, the figure blurred inside the mountain.
The figure arrived in a chamber, falling to its knees. "Master... mission accomplished." The figure waved their hands in the air and the golden box floated in the air.
A lady with dark wavy hair tied up in a ponytail sat cross-legged on a high chair. Her brown eyes fixated on the figure. Her lips tugged into a smile but it didn’t reach her eyes. She rose from her chair, her black leather pants and jacket accentuating her curves.
"I’m really surprised that you were able to pass the mission. This was a hard one." She drawled, her voice soft but dripping with menace.
"I’m glad that I met the expectation."
"I’m proud of you... Raven." The woman caressed the golden box.
The figure removed her mask, her black hair was tied back, her brown sharp eyes met with those of Phoebe. Her face was cold and expressionless. "And I’m happy I was able to please you, Phoebe." Raven stood up, dusting the dirt from her clothes.
"It has been a long time... you have grown up, my little Raven." Phoebe retracted her hand from the box and walked towards Raven.
"Yes, it has been a very long time. So can I see my brother now?"
"Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. You are still as impatient as before." A lopsided smile formed on her lips. "Your brother is currently undergoing training, just like you did." She pressed her lips into a thin line.
"You mean I might not see him for the next couple of years?" Raven’s brows furrowed, her hands clenched tightly into a fist.
Phoebe placed a hand on her shoulder. "Exactly, you came at the wrong time."
"But I have accomplished the mission and I have done everything that is asked of me. You promised me you would let me see him... why are you playing with me? It has been 11 years since I last saw him... Why won’t you let me see him?!!"
A glint flickered through Phoebe’s eyes. "Didn’t you listen to what I just said?" she drawled. "You should know that things have changed in the Al’Morthal. Other branches have come to join us. We can’t give them any chance to point fingers at us."
"But that is far from what I’m asking. I don’t care about the hierarchy of the association. I only care about my brother." Raven’s eyes darkened.
Phoebe paced around her. "That’s where you are wrong. Power means everything even if you want to change the rules..." She leaned closer to Raven. "If you don’t want to be subjected to others."
"But I am powerful." Raven snapped back.
"Well, not powerful enough. I know you are very talented for your age. But you need to raise the Al’Morthals’ rank. Only then, can you control your fate."
Raven looked away, her eyes flickering with emotion before they went cold. "You want to give me another mission, don’t you?"
"Well, not right now. This box is not the real deal. We have been played by that dwarf Emperor of Summere. But don’t fret about it... We knew about it. We just wanted to test you." Phoebe stopped right behind her.
Raven’s knuckles whitened. She knew she was nothing more than a pawn to them. But Phoebe was right about one thing... power is everything. If she wants to find her brother without relying on them, she needs to get a title.
"When the next mission is ready. Let me know." She gave a bow before walking away.
"She has a temper. She didn’t even gist me about the time she was away." Phoebe sighed.
....
In a secluded chamber, a boy around the age of twelve sat legs crossed within a rune swirling with red and black energy.
His black hair clung to his face, his upper body was bare, and a red line formed all over his body.
His brown eyes flicked to a shade of blood red, his hands controlling the Mana to absorb them.
In the far corner from where he was training. A man with a very large frame sat on a chair, casually sipping alcohol from a small metallic can.
The wall in the middle of the chamber vibrated slightly before it slid open.
Phoebe’s boot clicked clack on the rocky floor. Her eyes were cunning and a mischievous glint flickered through them.
"How is the training going?" She asked with a cheerful voice.
Rock turned to her. "Good." He tilted the can into his mouth.
"Raven has made it out. She requested him." She turned to Daemien, who was struggling to control the dark powers.
"Well, we have expected this. And I know you have already handled it." Rock said, his voice thick and hoarse.
"I did, but I have a feeling that she won’t give up easily."
"Let’s worry about that later." Rock’s eyes flicked to Daemien. "He is very talented, but he has not been able to break through to the ascendant stage. And his hair and eyes haven’t changed yet."
"As the demon child he is supposed to be showing those features by now, considering the amount of dark energy we have been training him with," he added.
"Maybe, this is not something we can explain. But I believe he is the demon child. No one can survive this amount of dark energy, especially at a young age." Phoebe began. "But to clear up the doubt, why don’t we send him on a mission to the northern mountain?"
"To do what? And that is like a suicide mission. If the Vorrak awakens again, that would be the end of him." Rock furrowed his brows in disagreement. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"That is the main point of it, if he can awaken the Vorrak, we will know that he is the real demon child. And then it can clear up accusations from the other members."
"But what if he truly awakens the Vorrak? How do we ensure he is safe?" Rock turned to Phoebe, meeting her gaze.
