Longevity starts from having a daughter in old age-Chapter 427 - 428: 397 Night Raid_1
Chapter 428 -397 Night Raid_1
“It seems you’re not too dull,” Xu Mu chuckled.
“Did you already suspect something, sir?” asked Zhang Ergou in astonishment.
They had been dining together, and nothing had seemed unusual.
“Open the window and see for yourself,” said Xu Mu.
Zhang Ergou, full of doubt, opened the window and peered outside. Both the streets and the residential area nearby were dead silent.
“There doesn’t seem to be anything abnormal nearby, sir,” said Zhang Ergou, puzzled.
“Think about it.”
Xu Mu shook his head in disappointment and laid down on the bed.
“Think about it?”
Zhang Ergou understood that he must have overlooked something.
Upon reflection, he suddenly realized the problem.
It was too quiet!
When they arrived, there had been few people on the streets, but not none.
The nearby residential area still had lights on, and the voices of residents were audible. But now, everything had disappeared.
Right, there were also no sounds of insects chirping!
After all, this was just a small county town, only slightly better than rural areas. The chirping of insects and singing of birds at night would be normal.
But now all of these had vanished.
There was only one situation that could cause this.
Zhang Ergou’s face turned a shade paler.
“Those people have found us, they were too quick!” he exclaimed.
Although he had anticipated that their daring move would attract retaliation, it was still hard to accept that their pursuers had appeared so quickly, right after they had finished their meal.
“If they couldn’t catch up in this amount of time, they might as well go kill themselves!” Xu Mu calmly commented, his eyes half-closed.
“So, what should we do now? Should we run?” asked Zhang Ergou, nearly panicking.
“Run? Just return to your room to rest, and don’t bother me.”
“Huh?”
Zhang Ergou was stunned, wondering why they should rest at such a critical moment.
Did Xu Mu plan to die peacefully in his sleep, to avoid experiencing pain?
“Sir…”
“Have you forgotten what I said earlier?” Xu Mu’s voice went cold.
Zhang Ergou shuddered.
“Yes, sir!”
Despite his intense worry, he dared not contradict Xu Mu. So, he reluctantly returned to the next room.
Soon after, the sound of Zhang Ergou lying down could be heard, Xu Mu’s face breaking into a faint smile.
“This kid actually hid under the bed, he’s really a scaredy-cat.”
Considering that Zhang Ergou was just an average villager, it was already courageous of him not to wet his pants from fear.
As time ticked away, Xu Mu lay motionless with his eyes closed, seemingly asleep.
In the other room, Zhang Ergou huddled up in a corner under the bed, his heart jumping out of his chest, too fearful to even close his eyes.
Imagining the area swarming with people, ready to burst in at any moment to take his life, how could he possibly fall asleep?
Though Xu Mu was a formidable martial artist, their enemies wouldn’t have dared to follow them here if they weren’t a match in strength.
Zhang Ergou guessed the only reason they hadn’t stormed in yet was because they were intimidated by the corpses, thus holding back and gathering more strength.
At this thought, he couldn’t help but sigh.
It wasn’t that he regretted following Xu Mu.
After all, his entire family had been killed by the monster. He had sworn to devote his life to anyone who could help avenge them.
He sighed because he felt it was somewhat a pity to die just after enjoying a good meal.
“Had I known, I would have taken the sir to that place to have some fun before entering the city. Even if we died, we could at least become merry ghosts! Sigh!”
Zhang Ergou started imagining what kind of luck he would have in his next life.
As he worried, half an hour passed, and finally, there were signs of movement outside.
“Attack!”
A thick shout came from the outside, followed by the intense sound of something tearing through the air.
Whoosh whoosh!
One by one, crossbow arrows as thick as arms tore through the wall of the inn, aiming at Xu Mu’s room and shooting over.
Accompanied by these crossbow arrows were countless other arrows.
The sound of arrows piercing the wall was just like rainfall, lasting for more than ten breaths.
When everything subsided, Zhang Ergou cautiously peeked out, only to see Xu Mu’s room — the walls were riddled with holes, and wherever arrows hadn’t gone through, they hung.
Zhang Ergou swallowed, his hands and feet numb.
Such a dense hail of arrows, wouldn’t the master be turned into a porcupine?
Moreover, he didn’t hear any screams, they hadn’t killed him right from the start, had they?
“Master, are you alright?”
Just as Zhang Ergou began to speak, there was a response from outside before Xu Mu could reply.
“Someone is still alive, kill him!”
This time an even denser shower of arrows flew toward Zhang Ergou.
It’s over, I didn’t think I would die like this!
Just as this thought flashed in Zhang Ergou’s mind, a great force pulled him over from behind. He then saw Xu Mu standing in front of him completely unharmed, his left sleeve spun around and those shooting arrows landed in his hand,
Then Xu Mu used the strength of his wrist, and those arrows shot back at several times the speed they came.
The arrows tore through the walls, ripping through the air, followed by the harsh sound of piercing flesh. It came along with cries of agony.
With this burst of power from Xu Mu, the whole inn finally couldn’t withstand it and collapsed with a loud rumble.
Once again Xu Mu shook his sleeve, directly breaking through the falling roof and safely standing in the ruins.
“Master, are you okay?” Zhang Ergou asked excitedly.
He didn’t expect Xu Mu to come out unharmed from such a violent attack.
“You’re hoping something bad happened to me?” Xu Mu laughed.
“No, no, I….”
Zhang Ergou hastily explained.
“Okay, it’s just a joke.”
Xu Mu shook his head and then looked into the darkness.
Five figures wearing dark steel armor, their bodies covered like iron men, holding swords over a meter long, rushed at him from five directions.
Beast-like shadows enveloped the five men. Their bodies full of a brutal and ruthless aura, coupled with their equipment, would probably frighten an ordinary person at first sight.
In the face of all this, Xu Mu remained nonchalant.
With a flick of his left sleeve, the five arrows stuck in the wall appeared in his hand, then he threw them out.
The five arrows shot out in five different directions, flying towards the five men charging at him.
The speed of the arrows was simply too fast. The five men had just raised their swords to block when the arrows struck their chests, piercing their sturdy dark iron armor and brutally stabbing into their bodies.
“Thud, thud!”
Mouthfuls of blood sprayed out. The five retreated a few steps, fell to their knees, and looked at Xu Mu in horror.
What kind of monster is he?
Five wild martial artists teamed up, wearing dark armor, couldn’t even block the arrows casually thrown by their opponent.
The gap was wide to unimaginable extent.
“Kill him quick!”
Someone cried out from the darkness.
The faces of the five on the ground changed, but none of them moved.
The gap in strength was too great. Storming ahead would be similar to facing death.
Xu Mu’s brow furrowed, he grabbed another arrow, and flung it towards the man shouting from the darkness.
“No!”
All five martial artists shouted in unison to stop him, but why would Xu Mu listen to them.
With a thud, panic ensued from the other side and the soldiers began shouting.
“It’s bad! The county magistrate has been killed!”
