Chapter 80: Chapter 79: "Stop! Stop Fighting!

Teacher Wu called Xu Su to his office and gave her a key. "I also teach math for several of the senior classes, so I might not be able to focus as much on our class for a while. If I don’t show up for math class one day, just go to the drawer, grab a packet of worksheets, and pass them out for everyone to do."

"..." Staring at the key Teacher Wu handed her, Xu Su suddenly understood how the English and chemistry class representatives felt. ’This really is a hot potato.’

Xu Su didn’t know why, but in such a serious moment, her first reaction was to gossip. "Have you ever written questions for the college entrance exams?" she asked.

’Of course!’

’Huang Feng and the others must have been a bad influence on me. I’ve become such a gossip...’

Teacher Wu paused, then smiled. "I suppose I have. Xu Su, there are twelve packets of worksheets in this drawer. Take them in order from top to bottom. If anything unexpected happens in class, come find me in the office. If I’m not there, I’ll be in Senior Class 16, 12, or 1."

This was the first time Xu Su learned that Teacher Wu taught so many senior math classes on top of their own first-year advanced class.

’He’s so incredible...’

Her thoughts must have shown on her face.

Teacher Wu smiled again. "I’ll be dedicating more of my energy to the graduating classes for now, but we still need to keep our class discipline in check. You may not be the class president, but you are my math rep, so please keep a close eye on things."

Gripping the key, Xu Su nodded solemnly, feeling the weight of this new responsibility.

As soon as she returned to the classroom, Huang Feng leaned in and asked why Teacher Wu had called for her.

Xu Su told Huang Feng and the others everything Teacher Wu had said, and they were all quite surprised.

Huang Feng said, "Does this mean we’ll be doing nothing but worksheets until the seniors finish their college entrance exams? Even our homeroom teacher is prioritizing the seniors. Are we freshmen not going to have any teachers left?"

’Xu Su didn’t know the answer to that, either. But given the circumstances, it seemed highly likely. After all, the semester was already halfway through, and according to Teacher Wu, he had already covered all the required material...’

’So there was no point in having regular lessons anymore, was there?’

When class let out, the students who were in the know asked around and found out that only the advanced class was missing so many teachers.

The other twenty-five classes might have been missing a teacher here or there, but none had been hit as hard as the advanced class.

"Is this the price of being in the advanced class? All of our teachers are top-notch, so of course they can’t be dedicated solely to our grade."

"But our class is also super efficient. I asked some students from Class 2 and Class 21, and they’re just starting the sophomore material. We’ve already finished all of it."

A few of the class officers held a small meeting, organized by the discipline monitor, Fu Jun. As the math rep, Xu Su attended as well...

Fu Jun’s main point was that in the teachers’ absence, they had to be extra strict about discipline. There could be absolutely no slacking off or loud chatter.

They had to make sure that whenever Teacher Wu managed to take a moment from his busy schedule to check on them, he would be impressed by the students’ self-discipline!

In reality, the advanced class was known for its good conduct, so Xu Su wasn’t worried about discipline at all. It wasn’t like she’d ever seen Teacher Wu need to enforce it, anyway.

She never expected to eat her words just one week later that afternoon.

This was the third math class Teacher Wu had missed. Five minutes after the bell rang, seeing that the teacher hadn’t come in, Xu Su went to his office, retrieved a stack of worksheets, and handed them out for the students to do.

They had gone through this routine three times now, and the students were getting used to it.

Aside from the occasional murmur of students discussing the problems, the class was indeed well-behaved.

’As the math rep, Xu Su felt a sense of relief. Teacher Wu really knew what he was doing. Even in his absence, most of the students were still orderly.’

However, her relief was short-lived. A loud CRASH echoed from the back of the classroom. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Deng Hui’s deskmate, Qiu Kai, had kicked his desk over, and the two were now wrestling on top of the toppled desk.

That wasn’t the worst of it. The real problem was that when the desk was kicked over, Qian Jia, who sat in front of Deng Hui, had been sitting quietly at her seat working on problems. The impact shoved her forward, causing her own desk to topple over as well.

As both desks collapsed, Qian Jia was pinned between them. Her face contorted in pain as the desks crushed her around the waist.

It hurt just to look at her. Xu Su shot to her feet and yelled, "Pull them apart!"

A few boys nearby were already trying to break up the fight. Xi Zirong, who was a little farther away, rushed over. He clamped one hand on Deng Hui’s torso and used his other arm to block Qiu Kai, who was trying to lunge forward again. "Stop it! Break it up!" he said in a stern voice.

Huang Feng and Xu Su rushed over to help Qian Jia up. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"

Qian Jia’s eyes were brimming with tears; she was clearly in a lot of pain. She pointed to her own back. "My back hurts so much! Do you think a bone is broken?"

The girl’s pained cries snapped the two boys, who were about to go at it again, back to their senses.

Realizing what they’d done, they both froze, their faces filled with panic.

Seeing that Qiu Kai and Deng Hui had stopped, Xi Zirong let go. He looked at Qian Jia and frowned. "Let’s get you to the infirmary to get checked out."

He looked at the tall Qiu Kai and gestured to Qian Jia, who was in too much pain to stand up straight. "What are you gaping at? Get her on your back and follow me."

Without another word, Qiu Kai hoisted Qian Jia onto his back. Xu Su followed them; she was a class officer and Qian Jia’s friend, and since Qian Jia’s back was hurt, it was best for another girl to be there.

She looked at Huang Feng, who wanted to tag along, and said reassuringly, "I can go. It’s still class time, so you should stay here."

The infirmary was a ways away. The group hurried past several classrooms, including Senior Class 1. Xu Su suddenly remembered what Teacher Wu had said.

Hoping to get lucky, she pushed open the closed front door of Senior Class 1. Inside, Teacher Wu was in the middle of a serious lecture.

He didn’t notice Xu Su at the door at first. It was only when the students started looking toward the entrance, one after another, that he followed their gazes and saw her.

When he saw it was Xu Su, Teacher Wu put down his textbook and quickly came out.

Xu Su quickly explained what had happened. "Teacher, I have to get to the infirmary," she added. "Qian Jia hurt her back, and she needs another girl with her."

Teacher Wu’s face was grim. "You go on ahead. I’ll be right there."

Xu Su jogged to catch up with Xi Zirong’s group, and they soon arrived at the infirmary.

It was the same middle-aged male school doctor who had given her cold medicine before. He was taken aback by the commotion. "What happened here?"

Xu Su explained, "She was hit in the back by a desk. It was kicked over with a lot of force. Could you please take a look and see how bad it is? We need to know if she needs to go to the hospital."

At the mention of the hospital, the color drained from both Qiu Kai’s and Deng Hui’s faces.
