Living Only For Myself: Make Those Who Hate Me Regret It-Chapter 33: "I’m Really Not Dating.
Given the rocket class’s fast-paced teaching style, the teachers had already covered nearly all the material for the first semester of their first year. The plan was to lead the students through a comprehensive review to solidify their knowledge before starting on next year’s curriculum.
Halfway through the lecture, a few coughs echoed intermittently throughout the classroom. Teacher Wu took a sip of water to soothe his throat and said, "A lot of students have caught the flu recently, so everyone, please be careful. The weather is getting colder, yet I see some of you are still dressed in very thin clothes."
"Don’t sacrifice warmth for style. When it’s time to study, just focus on your studies. Once you get into a good university, you’ll have all the time in the world to be stylish."
The students in the class rewarded him with a round of laughter.
Teacher Wu seemed to be in a good mood today. He let the students laugh for a moment before adding, "Oh, right. If you really get sick, you can go directly to the school infirmary to get cold medicine. Our infirmary stocks common flu medications, and they’re free of charge."
Many students, like Xu Su, had no idea about this. Hearing such good news, the classroom began to buzz with chatter.
Zhou Dongdong, who had always been bold, shouted, "The school is so considerate! I’ll be sure to spread the word and help recruit another batch of outstanding new students for you to teach next year."
"Don’t you all get any ideas about freeloading off the school," Teacher Wu said with a laugh, tapping the lectern with a board eraser. "If you’re genuinely sick, you have to go to the infirmary in person with your student ID and let the school doctor examine you."
"And one more thing. If you’re sick, don’t force yourself to come to class. A student in Class 12 came to school with a high fever and almost fainted in the classroom. Studying is important, of course, but you must remember that your health is your greatest asset."
His words were touching. Many students knew in their hearts that during their three years of high school, besides their parents, their teachers were the only ones who truly wished for both their academic success and their good health.
Just as a harmonious mood settled over the teacher and students, Huang Feng suddenly stood up. "Teacher Wu, is it true that female students can’t ask the class monitor for leave? Do we have to go to the vice class monitor?"
The relaxed atmosphere in the classroom instantly fell deathly silent.
Nearly everyone in class knew about the incident during the break, and Huang Feng was no exception. After the seat change, she was now far from Xu Su. She had been about to go and start a confrontation, but then the bell for class had rung.
She had planned to hold it in and settle the score after class, but since Teacher Wu had touched upon the topic, she couldn’t hold back any longer and asked directly.
Fu Zichen shot to her feet as if on reflex. "Teacher, if some students have a problem with it, then I don’t want to be the vice class monitor anymore!"
The smile on Teacher Wu’s face instantly vanished. "Both of you, sit down. We’ll continue with the lesson. Come to my office after class."
After this interruption, a somber mood fell over the classroom.
As one of the parties involved, Xu Su furrowed her brow, a little worried about Huang Feng.
Fu Zichen was ranked second in the entire grade. Aside from Xi Zirong, she was the rocket class’s other star pupil, the second-favorite student of every teacher.
’By openly questioning the vice class monitor, will Huang Feng leave a bad impression on Teacher Wu?’
If Huang Feng had to leave the rocket class because of her, Xu Su couldn’t possibly turn a blind eye.
The bell finally rang, signaling the end of class. Huang Feng and Fu Zichen were called away, and Xu Su immediately followed them out.
Teacher Wu’s private office was on the third floor. As she was heading up the stairs, Xu Su noticed someone following her. "What are you doing here?"
"I’m going to explain the whole situation to Old Wu," Xi Zirong said, pressing his lips together. "This started because of me. It has nothing to do with you."
Xu Su understood his meaning in an instant. A look of sudden realization crossed her face. "Fu Zichen... and you?"
"There’s nothing between us," Xi Zirong said, looking up at her. "It has nothing to do with me." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
"..."
’There’s really no need to be so serious with the explanation.’
Xu Su more or less understood that she had been caught in the crossfire. At least, from her perspective, it was entirely undeserved.
’Did Fu Zichen misunderstand, thinking I was deliberately trying to get close to her precious class monitor?’
The office door wasn’t fully closed, and the sound of Fu Zichen’s sobs drifted through the gap. Xu Su’s expression tensed.
’No matter what, Fu Zichen was the one crying. At this age, it seemed like whoever cried was automatically in the right.’
’She wondered if she should try to feign tears as well.’
She tried for a good while but couldn’t squeeze out a single tear. Instead, Xi Zirong simply pushed the door open and walked in.
’As expected of a prodigy, his efficiency was off the charts.’ Before Xu Su could even organize her thoughts, Xi Zirong had already explained the gist of the morning’s events in just a few words.
Teacher Wu, who had been listening quietly, suddenly looked up. His eyes swept over Xu Su and Xi Zirong. "You two went to the school infirmary together, and then to the cafeteria?"
Xu Su finally managed to get a word in. "I didn’t know how to get to the infirmary," she explained. "The class monitor is a helpful person, so he took me. As for the cafeteria... we both had to eat breakfast."
Teacher Wu nodded and chuckled. "Mm... I understand the situation now."
He looked at Fu Zichen, whose eyes were red from crying. "When students need to ask for leave, they can ask either you or Xi Zirong. There’s no strict dividing line between male and female students. We’re not that old-fashioned here."
Fu Zichen sounded aggrieved. "But the girls in class always come to me when they need leave. It’s become the unwritten rule."
"Alright, their seats are close to each other, so asking him was just a matter of convenience," Teacher Wu said soothingly. "Don’t put too much pressure on yourself as vice monitor. Just go with the flow. If someone comes to you for leave, approve it. If they don’t, don’t get upset. As long as they’ve properly requested leave, that’s all that matters."
He then turned to Huang Feng, who looked like she was enjoying the show. After lightly reprimanding her for disrupting class, he waved his hand. "All of you can go. We’ll consider this matter closed. Don’t bring it up again and affect the relationships between your classmates."
Xu Su breathed a sigh of relief. Just as she was about to leave, she heard Teacher Wu say, "Xi Zirong, you and Xu Su stay behind."
Huang Feng, thinking she had won a direct victory against Fu Zichen, was immensely pleased with herself. She shot Xu Su a triumphant, vindicated look before marching out like a victorious general.
Xu Su wanted to cry but had no tears. ’That silly girl still hasn’t figured out what’s really going on,’ she thought with exasperation.
There was only one chair in front of the desk. Xi Zirong didn’t sit, so Xu Su didn’t either. The two of them stood side by side, heads lowered, in a posture that suggested they were ready for a lecture.
Teacher Wu got himself a cup of hot water from the dispenser and looked at the two students. "So, talk to me. Is this puppy love?"
Xu Su’s head shot up, and she shook it back and forth like a rattle. "No! I’m not in a relationship, Teacher!"
Terrified that the teacher would suspect something and call her parents, Xu Su emphasized again, "I’m really not in a relationship."
Her earnest, frantic explanation made even Xi Zirong, standing beside her, glance over at her.
Teacher Wu was amused. He turned to Xi Zirong. "The young lady here certainly doesn’t look like she’s in any relationship. What about you?"
Xi Zirong remained silent for a moment, but his ears slowly started to turn red.
