Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 71: Hunting Goats
"It really is a small feline, not sure if it’s a wild cat." Xu Yi rubbed his nose, then started looking for footprints on the ground, trying to see where it came from and if it had gone far.
Leaves were everywhere, making it really difficult to find footprints.
After half an hour of searching, Xu Yi didn’t find anything and eventually had to give up.
"Couldn’t find it, it’s already gone." Xu Yi said to Lu Ke, then added, "Let’s keep half of the fish for tonight; I’ll set a trap and we can catch it then."
"Okay, breakfast is ready too, wash up and have some breakfast." Lu Ke felt a bit useless for getting scared by a wild cat and looked at Xu Yi with embarrassment.
"Alright." Xu Yi nodded, taking down the hunting bow.
"Xu Yi, am I too useless for getting scared?" Lu Ke asked as Xu Yi seemed so calm.
"We’re in the wilderness; it’s normal to be afraid of wild animals. Fear keeps us cautious. Being careless could cost us our lives. So, you did nothing wrong. At least when you came to call me, you still had a crossbow in hand, which was very good." Xu Yi turned to Lu Ke and spoke seriously.
This wasn’t to comfort Lu Ke, but to acknowledge her reaction.
"Really?" Lu Ke glanced at Xu Yi, afraid of disappointing him.
"Of course, it’s true. You’re not a little girl who needs coaxing. I have no reason to fool you." Xu Yi smiled.
Lu Ke glanced at Xu Yi, nodded, and felt a sense of relief in her heart.
After breakfast, Lu Ke measured Xu Yi’s waist.
After all, without any elastic bands, the right size was even more important.
She carried a backpack and put the plastic bag of cold boiled water into it. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
"The backpack is well made, and the strap length is just right," Xu Yi praised Lu Ke, then put his machete on his waist and slung the hunting bow and arrow quiver over his back.
"I’m heading out to hunt, might be back late, don’t worry about me," Xu Yi told Lu Ke, then placed the engineer shovel into the pack basket.
Despite having a backpack, Xu Yi still planned to bring the pack basket.
This way, in case they found edible wild greens, Xu Yi could bring them back with the basket.
"Okay, stay safe. I’ll protect myself at home," Lu Ke patted the crossbow at her waist, showing she’d take care of herself.
"Alright, see you at noon," Xu Yi said and went out.
Lu Ke watched Xu Yi leave, then closed the fence gate.
Taking a deep breath, Lu Ke took out yesterday’s cotton cloth and carefully drew Xu Yi’s shorts using charcoal.
She planned to make two pairs for Xu Yi so they could be alternated and washed.
After drawing, Lu Ke cut the cotton cloth with a dagger and continued with the second pair.
After she finished the cutouts, Lu Ke made herself four pads. Since she had cotton cloth and cotton, she could make them herself.
She felt there was enough leftover material to make a vest for both Xu Yi and herself. T-shirts would be a bit too much.
Under these conditions, having a vest was already quite good, and neither she nor Xu Yi would mind.
Drawing the design while keeping an ear out for surrounding sounds.
After the morning incident, she was even more cautious.
While Lu Ke was cutting the fabric, Xu Yi had arrived at the waterhole area and climbed a tree, waiting patiently.
Undoubtedly, animals would come here to drink water.
What Xu Yi needed now was patience, keeping an eye on everything and listening carefully.
As time slowly passed, Xu Yi on the tree barely moved.
"Isn’t Xu Yi too lazy, just staying in the tree like that?"
"You call this lazy? Look at what everything Xu Yi has done in the past 12 days, and you dare say he’s lazy?"
"Obviously, animals will come to drink water here, waiting here makes him lazy?"
"He knows animal distribution very well and naturally knows where to hunt. Unlike us, who know nothing."
"Why bother with that nitpicker? I bet fifty cents he’ll see animals today."
"Hope it’s not snakes again; I really dislike those, and so does Loli Ke."
"Look carefully, there’s an animal appearing at the twelve o’clock direction."
Not only did the people in the live stream notice the traces of animals, but Xu Yi also discovered them.
Not only because he was up high, but also because his vision had improved.
There were five animals in total, eating grass and approaching the waterhole.
They occasionally raised their heads to observe their surroundings, with ears twitching.
Obviously, these animals were very alert.
These were a group of goats, looking very plump.
Xu Yi didn’t rashly make a move but patiently waited.
There was a patch of fresh grass ahead of the tree he was on; he was waiting for the goats to get closer.
At about 30 meters, Xu Yi felt confident.
After all, his archery relied on feel and was untrained.
They were getting closer.
One goat approached, still very alert, occasionally nibbling on the fresh grass and then looking around.
Xu Yi took a deep breath and placed the bow and arrow he had been holding on the string.
Applying force with his hands, he drew the bow.
Closing one eye, he aimed.
After a few adjustments, Xu Yi locked onto the target.
"Whoosh!"
A sharp arrow shot out.
It hit the target, and the goat instinctively jumped after being struck by the arrow.
Xu Yi collected his bow, swiftly slid down from the tree, and chased in the direction of the goat.
The arrow-struck goat bounced away, along with the remaining goats.
Shooting a bow while running?
Sorry, Xu Yi hadn’t learned that and didn’t know how.
So now, he held the machete and steadfastly chased the herd of goats.
After chasing six or seven hundred meters, the arrow-struck goat suddenly slowed down.
After more than a thousand meters, it fell directly to the ground.
Seeing the goat lying on the ground, Xu Yi grinned broadly.
This was his first hunted prey, achieved with the bow and arrow he made himself, and with archery skills he hadn’t practiced.
"Come on, viewers, take a few screenshots for me, the handsome kind," Xu Yi said, striking a few poses.
"Hahaha, I didn’t expect my little brother to be so vain."
"Indeed very handsome, didn’t expect him to hunt a goat on the first try."
"I admit, I’m impressed by Xu Yi’s looks."
"This is thrilling, hunting feels so cool, no wonder many wealthy people spend money to experience hunting in Africa, I want to try it too!"
"Indeed, there’s a blood-pumping feeling; this shot is unbeatable."
"Feels like a blockbuster, I’m becoming a fan of Xu Yi now."
After a few poses, Xu Yi pulled out the arrow from the goat’s body, causing a spray of blood.
