Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 200: Giant Shadow Over the Treetops
"I’ll start the fire, you keep watch." Saying this, Lu Yao handed her machete to Wang Jin.
Wang Jin caught the machete, stood up, and looked around.
She hoped that no animals would appear at this time, otherwise, it could be very dangerous.
Ever since Lu Yao saw Xu Yi’s fire-starting tools, she made some of her own when she got back and always carried them in her pocket. Besides fire-starting tools, she always carried some dry fluffy grass in her pocket.
With this, it was easy to ignite a fire.
Soon, Lu Yao had the fire going.
Along the way, they picked up several bundles of firewood, more than enough to burn through the night.
With the flames lit, Wang Jin felt much more at ease.
Then, Lu Yao methodically began processing the Tree Sheep carcass, preparing dinner for the night.
In contrast, Xu Yi and Lu Ke were having a rather mundane time, sitting by the fire munching on jerky.
Not finding a water source left Xu Yi a bit frustrated.
So now, he and Lu Ke were dryly chewing on jerky without daring to drink much water.
Their water supply was already low, and they needed to conserve it. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Although they had a can of wine, Xu Yi and Lu Ke did not plan to use it.
The two chewed on the jerky slowly, without speaking.
Having stayed up all last night and walked all day, the two were already exhausted, hardly in the mood for conversation.
"You sleep for a while first. When you wake up, I’ll sleep." After finishing his jerky, Xu Yi suggested to Lu Ke.
"You sleep. I can hold on for a bit." Lu Ke felt that Xu Yi needed rest more, so she suggested he sleep first.
"No need, I’m in better shape than you. Besides, you’re still on your period. Don’t argue, be a good girl and sleep." Xu Yi added some firewood to the fire behind him.
The temperature was barely ten degrees, so they needed two fires to maintain warmth.
They had a rotten tree nearby, and they collected plenty of firewood along the way, so maintaining two fires until dawn was no problem, and they didn’t need to conserve firewood too much.
"Alright, I’ll switch with you when I wake up." Lu Ke said, then took her wolf-skin coat out, laid it on the ground, and lay down on it.
Soon, Lu Ke fell asleep.
Xu Yi glanced at Lu Ke and silently thought to himself, "System, check-in."
Last night, Xu Yi didn’t forget to check in.
Now, it was the 48th day, and he had successfully checked in for 53 days.
The next month’s reward package was getting closer.
After checking in, Xu Yi clenched his left hand and unwrapped the bandage.
Xu Yi found that the wound on the back of his hand had completely healed and was scabbed over.
The speed of recovery surprised Xu Yi.
After all, he was only injured yesterday morning, and it had healed in so short a time, which was quite unusual.
He squeezed his fist and couldn’t feel any pain.
After putting the bandage away in his bag, Xu Yi glanced at Lu Ke.
He had just heard Lu Ke snore twice.
Too tired, that’s why this happened.
A big storm had completely disrupted his plans.
In this forest, quite a few trees were broken by the storm; Xu Yi saw several.
Thankfully, the storm didn’t bring rain. Otherwise, tonight would have been tough for them.
In the forest, there were strange animal cries, all sorts, intermittently.
Xu Yi held his bow tightly, trying his best not to let go.
After all, his hearing was much better than average, so if animals approached, he could attack with the Hunting Bow first before using the machete.
As time passed, Xu Yi yawned several times.
To prevent himself from falling asleep, Xu Yi didn’t dare to sit down much.
Standing up made it a bit harder to fall asleep.
"Xu Yi."
Lu Ke woke up in the middle of the night and called out.
"Here, you awake?" Xu Yi responded and then sat down.
"You should sleep now; I had a full sleep." Lu Ke said, then got up, giving her spot to Xu Yi.
Xu Yi checked the time; it was past 2 AM, so he didn’t hesitate.
"Stay alert, and wake me if anything happens." After saying this, Xu Yi lay down, pulled a bit of the wolf-skin over his chest and stomach.
Lu Ke added some wood to the fire, then stood guard with her crossbow, vigilantly watching outside.
Time slowly passed, and finally, it dawned.
Not long after daybreak, Xu Yi opened his eyes.
"Thanks for the hard work." Xu Yi said when he saw Lu Ke practicing the Eighteen Forms of Body Strengthening.
"Not hard at all; I slept really well last night." Lu Ke replied with a smile, not stopping her movements.
Xu Yi stretched and joined Lu Ke.
After finishing the Eighteen Forms of Body Strengthening, they rested for a bit.
After breakfast and putting out the fire, Xu Yi and Lu Ke moved onward.
They hoped to find a water source within the day and decide on a campsite location.
After less than an hour of walking, they encountered an animal.
This was an animal they hadn’t seen before, gnawing on a tree.
With one piece each, Xu Yi and Lu Ke brought it down.
"Killed a Mouse-eating Raccoon, earned 2 points."
Upon hearing the prompt sound, they learned the animal was called a Mouse-eating Raccoon. But instead of eating mice, it was chewing on a tree?
"Xu Yi, is the liquid flowing from the tree water?" Lu Ke asked, noticing a liquid oozing from a bitten part of the tree root.
"It should be; otherwise, it wouldn’t be chewing here." Xu Yi replied, then drew his machete to make a cut on the tree.
Then Xu Yi saw the liquid seeping out from the cut.
A similar plant exists on Earth as well.
For example, water vines.
Xu Yi dipped his finger in some, rubbing it.
There was no sticky feeling; it was like water.
Xu Yi then tasted a little bit.
"No particular taste, should be drinkable." Xu Yi said; after all, he had a skill for identifying poisonous substances.
So Xu Yi went up to drink a mouthful.
It indeed had no taste, but drinking it brought a sense of freshness.
"It’s great, very refreshing." Saying this, Xu Yi made another cut for Lu Ke to drink from.
After they drank their fill, they filled a bamboo tube with the remaining water and used another bamboo tube and a plastic bag to collect more of the sap.
After gathering enough sap, Xu Yi picked up the dead Mouse-eating Raccoon and was ready to move forward.
Just then, Xu Yi felt a gust of wind blowing past.
At the same time, a massive shadow loomed above the forest.
Xu Yi immediately guessed the situation—there was a Flying Giant Beast overhead.
Could it be planning to attack them?
