Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 170: Strange Weather
"Well, tomorrow we won’t go hunting. We’ll start making paper and then go cut down the remaining flax stalks to weave long ropes," Xu Yi replied. After all, hunting requires long trips, and it’s not easy to gain anything in this area anymore.
Wang Jin and Lu Yao stayed at their own camp and even left a fox fur, indicating that their regular hunting range has expanded.
"Great, once the long rope is made, moving to Su Yan’s camp will be much easier," Lu Ke said with some anticipation. On the way back today, they saw quite a few animals but unfortunately didn’t hit any.
If they had, the two of them wouldn’t have to be chewing on jerky all night, their mouths getting sore from the effort.
.
Weaving a long rope over 60 meters takes a considerable amount of time, and creating a stable pulley system is time-consuming too. Even so, it’s more time-efficient than carrying everything to Su Yan and Yun Qing’s camp ourselves.
A single trip takes ten hours; it’s too far and too exhausting.
Once the rope and pulley system are ready, we could transport everything up the cliff and relocate to that camp within a day.
"Yeah, we shouldn’t be moving anytime soon," Xu Yi rubbed his hands together, feeling a chill at his back.
Temperatures have dropped, now at around ten degrees, and without a fire to warm his back, it’s quite chilly.
If winter stays this temperature, Xu Yi and Lu Ke won’t have to worry about keeping warm.
Standing up, Xu Yi returned inside and draped a wolf pelt over Lu Ke.
What the winter will really be like here is uncertain.
It might depend on the organizers.
Maybe their technology is advanced enough to control the weather?
If they want snow, it snows; if they want heat, it gets hot.
Of course, Xu Yi hopes it won’t come to that. It’s better when things are natural. Too much human interference would make surviving the 500 days even harder.
"Don’t you need it?" Lu Ke glanced at Xu Yi. After all, they have three wolf pelts. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
"No need, I’m fine. Just don’t catch a cold." Xu Yi smiled slightly, thinking it’s better to tough it out. Getting too comfortable might lead to complacency.
After an hour of drying, Xu Yi and Lu Ke put on their clothes.
"Let’s go to bed early tonight. You didn’t sleep well last night, and today we’ve been walking for about ten hours," Xu Yi suggested to Lu Ke, even though it was only a little past 7 PM.
"No need, I’m not tired. I’d rather work with some clay and make pottery," Lu Ke replied, wanting to make up for two previous failures.
"Alright, if you feel tired, go rest," Xu Yi said as he brought in some bamboo, preparing to split it into strips for weaving baskets.
"Yes, you too. Don’t just focus on taking care of me," Lu Ke responded before working with the clay.
Hearing this, Xu Yi felt a warmth in his heart.
Picking up the bamboo, Xu Yi began splitting it, recalling how his grandfather used to make bamboo strips.
It seemed easy, but proved difficult in practice.
Xu Yi found his bamboo strips were too thick, not meeting the requirements at all.
However, he wasn’t discouraged.
After all, he hadn’t learned this, nor received any bamboo craft gifts from the system.
If it didn’t work once, he’d try again, as Xu Yi was very patient.
If these bamboo strips couldn’t be used, they could always serve as firewood.
Around eleven o’clock, Xu Yi gradually grasped some techniques. Though not thin enough, they were getting thinner.
"Xu Yi, I’m going to sleep now, you should rest early too," Lu Ke said after washing her hands, speaking to Xu Yi before entering the house. An hour ago, she’d already felt sleepy but kept going.
"Alright, no need to rush waking up tomorrow," Xu Yi replied, continuing his work.
The rain outside continued, though light, with no sign of stopping.
Perhaps it would keep raining tomorrow.
After Lu Ke entered the room, she saw the fur laid neatly on the bed, folded to one side.
This was naturally the doing of Wang Jin and Lu Yao.
So Lu Ke spread them out again and went to bed.
Once she lay down, Lu Ke quickly fell asleep. After all, she was forcing herself to stay awake before bed.
One hour later, Xu Yi burned the bamboo strips he’d cut today in the fire.
"Finally found something Xu Yi can’t do; his bamboo strips are way too thick."
"Though getting thinner, I doubt Xu Yi can weave a basket."
"Xu Yi can’t, but Lu Ke can. As long as the bamboo strips are thin and flexible enough, Lu Ke will weave it."
"Bark and bamboo strips are different; Lu Ke might not manage."
"It’s just different materials, same method; how could it not work? You guys must be elementary students?"
"Good thing Xu Yi isn’t all-knowing; otherwise, I’d think he’s omnipotent."
"Finally, a boost to my self-confidence, not easy!"
Xu Yi went to the restroom, then returned to the room to sleep.
On the first morning, Lu Ke woke around 6 AM.
Upon waking, she found herself close to Xu Yi. Realizing her leg was draped across his waist, she bit her lip and carefully retracted it, moving back before sitting up.
So cold!
The air she inhaled felt freezing to her lungs.
Wrapped in her clothes, Lu Ke opened the door and stepped out.
Outside, it was even colder.
"Is this frost?" Lu Ke said in surprise, walking to the fence to look outside.
The vegetation was covered in a light frost.
Lu Ke was quite surprised, as this didn’t happen yesterday.
Previously, she didn’t think it would snow on this island. Now, she’s changed her mind.
Maybe snow is imminent.
Now she understood why she found herself close to Xu Yi in her sleep.
Because of the cold, they naturally gravitated towards each other for warmth.
After some light exercises, Lu Ke practiced the Eighteen Forms of Body Strengthening.
Completing it, Lu Ke felt warmth returning to her body.
"Brr, why is it so cold," Xu Yi said, emerging from inside, rubbing his arms.
"It frosted," Lu Ke said.
Xu Yi paused, knowing this happens when ground temperatures drop below zero, forming white ice crystals on surfaces.
Though the temperature dropped yesterday, it stayed above ten degrees, so how did frost form overnight?
The weather was behaving oddly; could it start snowing suddenly?
