Maybe My Life Is Too Simple

The chubby girl held a small bowl of rice and chopsticks as she climbed up onto a table, waiting for the food to be served. At that moment, Tianchen brought out a large bowl of chicken curry and placed it in front of the white-skinned girl, who was eyeing the chicken tail with bright eyes.

Fang Jiao followed with a plate of grilled chicken, while Liu Hao went to call his friends, the husband and wife, to join them for lunch. Liu Hao didn’t regard himself as the restaurant owner and the others as employees but saw them as friends.

The customers, who had been craning their necks to see what was cooking, tried to catch a glimpse of the fragrant curry in the bowl. They wanted to stand up and get a closer look but didn’t want to be too rude.

“What are you cooking? It smells amazing,” Qi Ye said as he walked out with his wife, the aroma hitting his nose. He approached and pinched the cheek of the only chubby child at the table. Xiaolin giggled before replying.

“It’s a new dish, Uncle Ye. After this, you’ll have to sell it at the restaurant too.”

“Oh! The little boss lady is giving her recipe to our small noodle shop. People will flock here so much that we won’t be able to keep up,” Qi Ye said in a playful tone, making Xiaolin laugh happily.

Once Qi Ye and his wife sat down at the table, everyone began to eat. Xiaolin picked up the plump chicken tail she had been eyeing and bit into it with relish. She wriggled in delight at the taste, though she found it a bit mild. She decided that when she grew up, she would make it spicier to her liking.

“It smells so good and tastes amazing,” Qi Ye said, his eyes widening as he looked at the bowl of chicken curry.

“You can also use chicken organs, or even pork ribs, Uncle,” Xiaolin suggested, before biting into a drumstick Fang Jiao had handed her, leaving her lips glistening with oil.

“Xiaolin has never made chicken curry with offal before,” Tianchen commented. “The offal is just as tasty as the meat. If we make it into curry, it would be delicious for sure.”

“You can come here to taste it, Uncle. I’ll be here to eat too, hehe.”

“A’Ye, can you tell the chicken supplier not to discard the offal? I’m not sure if they threw it away,” Liu Hao asked his friend, who nodded in agreement, his mouth full of rice. He had arranged to meet a builder tomorrow morning to discuss house construction and would be at the restaurant a bit later than usual.

Xiaolin ate while wriggling with joy, causing Fang Jiao, who was sitting next to her, to laugh in amusement. The sight of the little girl eating with one hand holding a chicken drumstick and the other using chopsticks to continuously feed herself, coupled with her plump cheeks and the aroma of the food, made some customers unable to resist.

"Uh... excuse me," a traveling merchant approached, looking apologetic for interrupting their meal. However, the aroma of the food and the enticing way the little girl ate had made him unable to resist any longer.

"Would you like to order more food?" Liu Hao stood up along with Qi Ye, ready to prepare food for the customer.

"Actually, is that dish available?" The merchant, around forty years old, pointed to the bowl of chicken curry prominently displayed in the middle of the table.

Everyone at the table looked at each other, blinking. Meanwhile, Xiaolin’s eyes sparkled. They were just testing the dish and teaching her Uncle Hao how to make it, but now a customer was interested and wanted to try it immediately. This seemed like a promising start!!

The little money-hungry girl nodded eagerly to her Uncle Hao, her cheeks jiggling with the motion.

"Do we have any chicken left, Uncle? It might be a good idea to let the customer try it first to see if it can be sold."

"In that case, please wait for about 45 minutes, as we haven’t prepared the ingredients yet. It will take a bit longer," Liu Hao said to the customer, who nodded and smiled contentedly.

"Thank you very much. I can wait."

Liu Hao and Qi Ye headed back to the kitchen to prepare the food. The customer returned to his table with a broad smile. Other customers, seeing that the restaurant owner was willing to make the new dish, also came up to place their orders. Xiaolin turned her head left and right so much she almost got a crick in her neck.

Seeing that up to ten more customers had ordered the dish, Xiaolin walked into the kitchen to tell her uncle to make a large pot of the curry to save time. Hearing this, Liu Hao quickly started grinding more curry paste. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Qi Ye’s wife also came in to help with the preparations, including pounding the curry paste, to speed up the process. Meanwhile, Xiaolin supervised closely, and soon the fragrant aroma filled the air again, making the customers restless and couldn’t stay seated.

"It’s ready! Hehe" Xiaolin walked out with a small bowl of rich chicken curry sauce. She wanted to pour it over her rice, as her greedy uncles had previously scooped out all the sauce from the main dish, leaving none for her.

"Then I’ll go help carry the food," Fang Jiao was about to get up from her chair, but a plump, white hand grabbed her first. Xiaolin’s big round eyes were fixed on Tianchen, who was gnawing on a piece of chicken.

"What is it?" Tianchen looked at his niece, blinking.

"Uncle, could you go help carry the food from the kitchen?"

"Oh, sure," Tianchen put down the chicken bone he was holding and disappeared into the back of the restaurant.

Xiaolin beamed and climbed up onto the chair, with Fang Jiao helping her hold the small bowl of curry sauce. The chubby girl scooped the sauce over her rice until it was soaked, then began eating with relish. The curry’s spicy and slightly salty flavor, combined with the fragrant spices and chicken, made it so delicious that she nearly floated away in bliss.

"Nom Nom, this is soo yummy!" Xiaolin chewed, her cheeks puffed out. Fang Jiao, sitting beside her, laughed.

"Is it really that good?" Fang Jiao asked, wiping the little girl’s round cheeks with a handkerchief because they were smeared with food, which Xiaolin didn’t seem to notice as her eyes were glued to the curry and chicken.

"It’s so good, sister! You should try it. Hurry before Uncle steals it," Xiaolin quickly scooped some curry onto Fang Jiao’s bowl of rice. Fang Jiao laughed brightly, seeing Tianchen glance sharply at them while carrying a bowl of curry for a customer.

"You little glutton," Tianchen said, setting the curry bowl down for the customer before walking briskly over to Xiaolin, pinching and stretching her chubby cheeks.

"UN-EL! (Uncle)" Xiaolin swatted at her uncle’s hand.

"You greedy little thing" Tianchen scolded his niece, while she protested, he snatched her small bowl of curry and disappeared into the kitchen.

Xiaolin sat there with a pout, her cheeks pink from being pinched and stretched, and now missing her bowl of curry. Tianchen soon returned with the same bowl, now filled to the brim with curry. He laughed at his niece’s scrunched-up face, then poured the curry over her rice, causing her to smile and start eating happily again.

"You little glutton."

"So are you, Uncle," Xiaolin retorted, lifting her head proudly. Her uncle was just as much a glutton as she was.

Everyone continued eating until they were full, but customers kept coming to request the curry chicken sauce until the fresh chicken was gone, leaving only the marinated chicken for grilling. Liu Hao then informed the customers that he would prepare more ingredients for the next day and invited them to come back tomorrow. The customers, already planning to eat at the restaurant, decided to order other dishes instead, as the new dish had only sparked their curiosity.

When the number of customers began to dwindle, Xiaolin led everyone to the back of the restaurant, leaving Fang Jiao to watch over the cash register. The sound of chopping pork echoed for a while until the minced pork was ready. Xiaolin seasoned it to her liking, especially with roasted pepper, which she ground until almost fine and added so much that the others’ eyes nearly bulged out.

"You’re putting that much in, Xiaolin?" Qi Ye’s wife asked, swallowing hard. When she had tasted Xiaolin’s curry chicken earlier, her mouth had been burning because she wasn’t used to eating very spicy food.

"Yes, lots of pepper makes it smell good and delicious. I like it, heh heh"

Then came the kneading process, which she left to the strong men, while she wandered around the small area behind the restaurant. After a while, she returned to the kitchen and saw that the pork was nicely kneaded. She told the men to cover it with a cloth and let it rest while she went back to the market to buy banana leaves, which she had forgotten earlier. An old woman selling bananas also sold banana leaves, which many vendors bought to wrap food and fresh meat for customers.

"Let’s go for a walk in the market, sister Fang Jiao. Maybe we’ll run into some handsome men," Xiaolin said, grabbing Fang Jiao’s hand.

Liu Hao, who had just come out, heard this and immediately turned to look at the plump child, causing Xiaolin to giggle. She quickly led Fang Jiao out of the shop, not without hearing a shout behind her. The two, one young and one older, walked hand in hand through the market, picking up some snacks along the way, and gifts from the vendors who were fond of the little business owner.

"Xiaolin, everyone seems to adore you," Fang Jiao said, holding a basket given by a vegetable seller who noticed their hands were already full of snacks.

"That’s because Xiaolin is adorable," the chubby child replied, popping a snack into her mouth. Fang Jiao laughed at this.

"You cocky little thing," Fang Jiao said, squeezing the child’s soft cheeks playfully.

The two walked leisurely, enjoying their time, as the shop selling banana leaves was at the end of the market. They were not in a hurry, so they strolled casually. At that moment, a junior soldier sent by the town mayor to help maintain order came running toward them.

Initially, he intended to run to Tianrong across the street but, upon seeing the plump, white figure, he ran over instead. His superior had instructed that if there were any problems, they could consult the little miss.

"Miss Tang," the soldier called out, panting heavily. The two girls looked startled but when they recognized the familiar soldier, they sighed out heavily in relief.

"What is it, soldier?"

"There is a problem at the meat market,"

Xiaolin noticed his tense expression and decided to follow him, with Fang Jiao trailing behind. As they reached the meat market, they heard a man’s angry shouts interspersed with a woman’s voice.

A small crowd had gathered, mostly customers from the market. Three soldiers were trying to mediate, but the two individuals involved seemed not to care and continued hurling insults at each other. Xiaolin, who was accustomed to various forms of coarse language from her future life, still felt a bit embarrassed by the harsh words.

"What’s happening?" Xiaolin asked, looking up at the soldier in charge. Seeing his subordinate return with the plump child, the soldier quickly approached, his face showing signs of exhaustion as if he had been running around the market all day.

“Young miss, they’ve been arguing for about half an hour now. We tried to calm them down, but it didn’t work. We got the gist of the fight and it’s the foreign merchant buying a lot of stuff from this market vendor to resell in the winter. However, he only went half of the way and all the stuff he bought stank and there were worms everywhere so he came back for a refund as the goods were not up to standard. So, as you can see, the vendor wouldn’t agree with him.”

Xiaolin nodded, her little head deep in thought about how to resolve the issue. She then instructed the soldier who had brought her to fetch her father as well, since from what she had heard, both the out-of-town merchant and the stall owner were quite hot-tempered.

"Please take them to your resting room first. It will take some time to talk things through, and discussing it here would disturb other customers and merchants. Soldier, please fetch my father. I’m just a child, and there’s not much I can say."

"Yes, miss," the soldiers responded and went off to their tasks.

Xiaolin sighed deeply, her eyes scanning the crowd gathered around the arguing parties. The crude insults continued to fly. Fang Jiao placed a comforting hand on the child’s small shoulder. Xiaolin took the opportunity to hug her waist and nuzzle her round face against the woman’s flat stomach in a display of affection. The faint fragrance from Fang Jiao’s clothes made the chubby child close her eyes in contentment. Besides the fragrance and the elegant hands, she also loved the soft bosoms of women.

Mmm, when she grew up, she would fill her house with beautiful women! The chubby child made a creepy face.

It took a while for the head soldier to escort the two quarreling parties to the resting room next to the market. By then, the soldiers were pale and exhausted. The plump, middle-aged woman sat with a furious expression, glaring at the thin, tall man of a similar age sitting across from her.

Xiaolin stood waiting for her father in front of the resting room, a small house with a large hall for sitting. All the soldiers still had to return to their own homes to sleep.

"What happened, Xiaolin?" Tianrong asked anxiously as he approached, with the same soldier following behind. He nodded at Fang Jiao, who bowed slightly to show her respect.

"A merchant from out of town bought goods from a market vendor, but the goods rotted and became infested with worms on his way back. He came back to ask for a refund, but the vendor refused, so they started arguing,"

Tianrong sighed after hearing his daughter’s explanation. This kind of problem happened frequently, but it usually involved locals and could be resolved with mediation. However, since this involved an out-of-town merchant, it would take longer to settle.

"It seems like we’ve been living peacefully for too long, my dear," Tianrong said as he patted his daughter’s head before opening the door and walking inside.

As soon as he opened the door, the sound of yelling hit him square in the face, leaving him momentarily speechless. He turned to raise an eyebrow at his daughter. Xiaolin gave a dry smile and nodded at her father as if to say, "Yes, Father, they are arguing this intensely."

Xiaolin held onto her father’s sleeve as they walked inside, while Fang Jiao excused herself to return to the shop, feeling that this matter did not concern her and she might just be in the way if she stayed. The two father and daughter entered, their ears assaulted by the loud bickering of the merchant and the vendor, which was nearly deafening. The soldiers looked equally worn out by the noise, but when Xiaolin saw the round face of the market vendor, she let out a knowing "Ah."

It’s the same old vendor...
