Chapter 49: Direct Confrontation
.
Zhu Rong had sensed a strange fluctuation of energy when he finished hunting the beasts after leaving the lizard cave, so he headed in that direction,
eventually coming across the two girls in danger.
At first, he thought the cause of that fluctuation was the panther, but after examining it, he realized it wasn’t.
He set the matter aside for the moment as he proceeded to save the girls,
but later, just as he was finishing dealing with Li Daniu’s lackeys, he felt that same fluctuation of energy again,
only this time, it was much stronger.
He immediately understood that whatever beast it was, it was powerful and now had targeted them.
So he didn’t waste time and warned everyone to run.
Thanks to his timely warning, the girls managed to get to safety,
and even the two unconscious lackeys managed to stay safe, as ironically,
the beast ended up going after the closest prey left, Li Daniu.
He felt a bit sorry for that guy but had more important things to worry about.
He had already noticed that Li Daniu had sent out a distress signal, so he knew help would arrive soon.
But there was a problem,
most likely Li Daniu would get beaten to death before then, and honestly, Zhu Rong didn’t feel right leaving him to die like that.
He held grudges against the guy, but centuries of his past life had faded most of them.
Only a few people remained on his death list.
As for pawns like Li Daniu, he’d gladly beat them up if given the chance, but he wasn’t sure he could kill them for trivial reasons.
He didn’t know if he had softened over the centuries or if he just no longer saw ants like Li Daniu through his eyes, but he decided to try something.
If he could buy some time, that would be perfect.
if not, he wouldn’t play the hero and would just get out of there.
He shook the hand that had just thrown the charged punch and looked down at the unconscious boy on the ground.
Without hesitation, he grabbed him and set off into the forest.
He knew his punch was far from enough to seriously hurt the creature,
but he had charged it enough with fire Qi to at least stun the beast for a few seconds.
He could feel the creature’s aura more clearly now and could tell it was in the early third stage, already heading toward mid stage.
He didn’t remember anything like this happening in his previous life,
after all, how could he,
since he was eliminated from the test early on?
"Tch, seems I overestimated myself a bit," he told himself,
thinking that his recovery in this life and the chance to finally cultivate like everyone else had made him a bit arrogant.
He thought he had some understanding of future events, but he forgot there were still too many unknowns he hadn’t considered because they weren’t directly related to him.
If he wanted to make the most out of all the future events he knew, he needed better planning and couldn’t just stick to what he already knew.
That said, he shook his head and leapt branch to branch, quickly putting distance between himself and the beast.
He’d managed to create some space, but he knew now that since he’d attacked it once, it wouldn’t let him go that easily.
Boom!
The sound of trees being crushed behind him echoed, and Zhu Rong knew the beast had woken up.
He limited his energy fluctuation to make it harder to detect him.
For third stage beings, it was easier to sense Qi fluctuations, so he couldn’t afford to give away his exact position.
Right now, the beast was following his trail but had no clear idea where he was.
Though, judging by how fast it was closing in, it wouldn’t be long before it found him.
"Shit, what’s taking them so long?" he muttered, changing direction.
The sounds of trees breaking grew louder, and he realized the beast had probably picked up on his position.
He thought of several options and soon made a decision.
"Hope they find you fast," he thought as he placed Li Daniu’s unconscious body on a high tree branch and then took off in a different direction,
this time faster.
He released a bit of his spiritual energy so the beast could notice him.
He knew he couldn’t move faster carrying dead weight, so he decided to leave him somewhere safe while drawing the beast’s attention.
Almost a minute had passed, and thanks to the distress signal, someone would soon reach Li Daniu.
Now, all he had to do was buy time while distracting the beast.
"Tch, I should really ask for extra points for this," he muttered as he zipped from tree to tree.
Several seconds passed, and he soon sensed the beast had closed in quite a bit.
He had thought of many things while running, but none were feasible since they all required a certain level of strength.
In the end, he could only set aside his frustration and go with something he had thought of earlier but had avoided using until now.
"Bastard, since you’re so eager to catch me, I’ll let you try," he said, pulling something from his backpack and stopping to turn around.
He could already see the giant gorilla destroying every tree in its path not far off.
He tightened his grip on the round object in his hand and began channeling spiritual energy into it.
The thing in his hand started to glow, and the longer he charged it, the brighter the light became.
By now, the beast had reached the foot of the tall tree Zhu Rong was on.
He looked up, spotting it almost immediately.
GRUAAAH!
It roared loudly, beating its massive chest before charging at him with full force.
"Hope you like this gift," he said, and as the beast nearly reached him,
he threw the object with all the strength in his arm straight at the creature.
