Silence descended on the sterilized room after Maevis dropped a bombshell, which not only stunned the other two examiners but caused a headache for Aoni as well.

"Maevis, what the hell are you trying to do? This is an examination process, not A RECRUITING OPPORTUNITY!" Slamming his hands on the table, Mark glared at the woman with such intensity that Aoni swore he could see the air between them spark with hostility.

"If we are establishing a test with a difficulty level as high as this, there should also be some benefit involved for the attendee," returning the glare with equally as much intensity, Maevis stated calmly.

"Treating this young man as if this is any other regular exam would undercut the purpose behind it. If he is able to take a crafted item to the third level and evolve it into combat equipment, does that not speak volumes about the viability of his Attribute?"

"Are you forgetting that his items aren’t marketable for regular use? They have restrictions; you can’t make a fortune off of them, especially with this…" Adding cadence to his statement, Mark angrily pointed at the table-embedded screen, more specifically the Crafters Brand.

"Not only does a person need to receive the young man’s blessing to bind the item, but they are effectively single use; once it is bound, that’s it, and to top it all off, he can remotely destroy the item at any time." Feeling the need to step in before the argument came to blows, Tristian added, causing the overconfident and generally calm woman’s expression to crumble momentarily before she recollected herself and looked to Aoni.

"Tell me, Traveler Thurston, how exactly does this brand work?" She asked with hawk-like, piercing gold eyes.

The brand carries my Energia Signature, and through it, I essentially turn all my items into an extension of myself. As Senior said, I can remotely detonate my items.

Struggling to keep a straight face and show zero fear, Aoni repeated the onscreen dialog and watched Tristian nod as if he was being proven right, but all of a sudden, he froze as a sudden thought came to the forefront of his bald head.

"And the detonation process, as you called it, what sort of effect is that?"

"I call it a detonation, but it’s more of a reconstruction; there are no explosions if that’s what you mean; instead, the item uh…falls apart. For example, if I were to trigger the brand on the gloves, they would shred and turn into scrap materials."

"However, if the item is already bound to the person, it will disappear; where it goes, I have no idea, but if I use what the description of my Attribute says as a resource, it should be returning to nature, which I interpret as decomposition." Fiddling with his hands as if he were a child being caught doing something bad, Aoni didn’t look up or try making eye contact, yet he could feel the unsettling look the examiners were giving him.

’Are you sure this is going to work? I mean, that woman is going after me, who knows what intentions she has…’

She, like the other two, is harboring thoughts of turning the User into a crafting slave, as the User would put it. Essentially, they find the User to be a diamond in the rough, where, if thrown resources to grow, could potentially craft extremely strong weapons that could be used to increase their Tier and place in society

’But now we’ve stated only I can control the items I make, that, along with the fact that I personally need to collect all the resources I use in my crafting, make me seem like a one trick pony, but isn’t that counter-productive, because so long as they stay on my good side, the items I craft for them would be viable and usable.’ Finding it difficult to keep up with things since it was all going over his head, Aoni struggled to make sense of everything.

The User isn’t incorrect in this assumption; however, it all falls down to bluffs and random chance. None of these higher Grade individuals want to be at the mercy of a "Newly Awakened," and for them to allow that would be a concession of power, along with giving up on the image they’ve spent a lifetime building for themselves

’So I make myself appear like a wildcard, the restrictions on my Falsified Attribute outweigh the potential gains it could bring? Is that what you mean?’

After reading that last line, Aoni felt his only option was to play the waiting game. After all, it wasn’t like he was remotely strong enough or dumb enough to try escaping the Bureau. His fate was in the hands of these three Examiners.

For several minutes, the back-and-forth arguments between Tristian, Maevis, and Mark continued, as they completely ignored the fourth presence in the room until finally, Maevis silenced her two peers and addressed Aoni.

"Traveler Thurston, go ahead and begin your final test; we will continue with you evolving the Armored Gloves into a combat weapon. Remember this: your goal is to upgrade it in such a way that it loses none of its previous properties and instead gains attack functions."

"Seeing as this task will no doubt be the most difficult yet, you will be allotted one hour to complete it; you may begin when ready."

"Yes, Madam," sitting up straight upon hearing his name, Aoni affirmed he understood the task and set to work by following the detailed instructions given to him by his Attribute Notice.

Forty-seven minutes later, Aoni sat staring down at the pair of modified, spikey gloves. On a surface level, they didn’t appear too different from before. Yet, internally, they now had a rigid structure that molded around the hand, in turn reinforcing the durability and allowing them to be utilized as a punching tool.

On top of this, the plated knuckles were molded into prominent spikes; overall, the process was extremely tedious but worthwhile, as not only did Aoni learn quite a bit from the step-by-step instructions given to him, but he’d come up with about a dozen different potential ways this information could be used back in his territory.
