Chapter 54: The Ruin

"Wait, monsters in broad daylight, the city is uptight, I’m not sure how people will take it," Rogen said.

"Come on, Rogen, like anyone is going to question you," John said.

"Arghhh, fine, the girl can stay with her guards," Rogen said.

"That’s better," John said. He tapped Jake on the shoulder. "Let’s go."

"Ophelia, you’ll wait for me here, okay? Make sure you stay with Rogen, no matter what, and if anything happens, use the ogres to escape," Jake said to her. She nodded in agreement.

Jake and Crypt left with John. Immediately they stepped out of the bar, John started walking up the street.

"So the ruins, what’s it all about?" Jake asked.

"The ruins? It’s a construct from one of the ancient trials that happened. It formed underneath the town, and so far, even long after the trial, it still remains.

Not only that, it stretches from this city deep into the forest, allowing monsters and beasts to enter.

In the past, they tried to seal off the connection to the forest, but no matter what they did, the connection kept reopening.

The ruin carries so many mysteries, undiscovered things, and also some very useful information," John explained.

"And our reason for going there?" Jake asked.

"Well, to investigate the issue of the tainted that have been popping up there. You see, to keep our organization running, we have secret sponsors from high places.

And one of our major sponsors happens to come from the Church of the Dragon, and you already know that the Church of the Dragon and the Abyss do not mix.

Also, we have sponsors in government, and they allow us to do a lot of things without restrictions as long as they are against the tainted and the Abyss Church, so they use us in order to investigate and get rid of things like that," John explained.

"Then what about your own investigation toward the trial?" Jake asked.

"Well, we are killing two birds with one stone. The ruin is something from the trial, so investigating it and the mysteries within will help us gather some information—anything useful at all," John said.

"So what I’m getting is that there is no real ground or solid foundation for you to work with," Jake said.

"Actually, there is. From past trials, we have come to learn that there is a way to meet with the person that sets the rules of the trial," John said.

"The dark dragon?" Jake asked.

"No, the person is not the dark dragon, and records only show one person meeting this being, but when he came out, he couldn’t remember what he looked like or what he said—just that he was the one that made the rules," John said. He dug into his pockets and pulled out a cigar, and using magic, he lit a flame with his finger and lit the cigar.

"Little things like this are what have been giving the organization the drive to keep going for all this time," he said before dragging on the cigar and puffing out a cloud of smoke.

As they got deeper into the city, Jake realized that activities had actually kicked up again—people selling and buying, businesses open, as if what had happened never actually happened. freeweɓnovel~cѳm

"You are wondering why the city is active after what happened, right? The thing is simple: the world will not stop because of one trial. This world has lived through fifty trials.

Tears and crying will only last for a day, and they have to continue, because their tears change nothing. The pain in their heart is something they have to carry for a better future.

It’s hard to explain it in words, to be honest, but everyone knows that they have to keep pushing regardless of what happened," John said.

"I understand it, life goes on," Jake said.

Finally, after a long while of walking, they arrived at their location. The gate of the ruin—well, it wasn’t a gate, it looked more like a massive metal structure that took people down and up like an elevator.

The entire area around the shaft was cleared like a park, and around the area was a fence, with guards in full armor marching around it.

The only way to get in was through the iron gate. The guards at the gate checked your details before allowing you into the compound.

A good number of adventurers were entering the gates.

"This number is greatly little compared to the other days—not everyone is up and moving yet," John said. He looked to Crypt and spoke, "Unsummon him. It will waste a lot of time to explain his existence as a humanoid summon and that you are a necromancer. It’s best we keep that silent," John said.

Jake did as he said and unsummoned Crypt before they walked to the gate. There were four guards standing at the gate, and when it was finally Jake and John’s turn, John showed his one three-gold-star adventurer card, and so did Jake.

The guards let them in without issue. When they were inside, they immediately headed toward the shaft, and two more guards were near the elevator.

"Get in and wait. When it is full, we will lower you into the ruin," one of the guards spoke. They did as he said and got into the elevator. They waited for a few minutes, and finally it was full with about ten people.

The guard walked to the lever and pulled it. A magic circle appeared beneath the structure, and it started descending. It wasn’t too fast and it wasn’t slow.

The walls inside the hole that led down were lined with crystal lamps to provide light. It took a minute or so for them to reach the ground. Immediately they got there, they walked out.

But they weren’t at the ruin yet, as there was a hallway that led to a massive metal gate. The gate was open, yet somehow you couldn’t see what was behind it.

"That’s the ruin, let’s go," John said and led the way.
