Chapter 51: Zaferoth William

Jake immediately covered Ophelia’s ears. "What the hell are you talking about?"

John saw his actions and let out a small chuckle. "Seems I was wrong. Don’t worry, I was just pulling your legs. A lot of nobles and people are into some very terrible kinks though," he said.

"Can you stop blabbering rubbish?" Petra spoke. She got on her feet, taking a closer look at Jake and Crypt.

"Can your summon take off the helmet?" she asked. Jake had never asked Crypt to take off his helmet, it never really crossed his mind, so when she asked now, he realized that Crypt was a human before he died, which meant he should have a human face.

"I can’t," Crypt said before Jake could even respond. Hearing what Crypt said, Jake didn’t push it beyond that.

"He can’t," Jake said.

"Isn’t it your summon? Command it to," she said.

"Petra, let’s not get pushy," John said and placed his hand on her shoulder. She immediately gave him a cold death stare, but he smiled in return.

"Alright, Jake, come with me," he said and walked to a table with a lot of scrolls and files on it. He offered Jake and Ophelia a seat before sitting down opposite them.

"Alright then, let’s get down to business. You see, for many years, the trials have happened on repeat over and over and over.

Not only does it cause the death of hundreds of millions, it also makes very little sense. On paper, the trial does make sense, using it as a testing ground to ensure that the world gets the right guardian.

But it begs the question: is that the only way to choose? Maybe it is, maybe it is not, but what’s important is that we don’t know, and no one wants to tell us.

Instead, we are pushed into this continuous endless cycle of trial and repeat."

"And so because of that, you want to destroy the trial?" Jake asked.

"Destroy? No, not destroy exactly. What we want to do is find a better solution. We already know that the abyss is looming above us, and even as crazy and terrible as the trials are, it’s nothing compared to the abyss," Jake said and got up. He walked to a shelf, brushing his finger through the books there, finally stopping on one.

He pulled it out, a thick book with a black leather back. He walked back to the chair and placed the book on the table.

"This is Zaferoth William’s Introduction to the Depths of the Abyss," he said. He placed his finger on the book. "This is only volume one, to be honest. We have volume two and three, but four and five are heavily guarded books—it’s hard to get a copy," he said and pushed the book to Jake.

"Inside that book is gathered information. William spent six hundred years of his life piecing together information, running around the world, traveling and gathering information of the abyss to write those books," John said.

"Is William an elf?" Jake asked.

"Indeed, he was a pure-blooded elf, royalty. But according to what was heard, his brother was picked as a chosen and died during the trials.

Due to that, he dedicated his life trying to understand the abyss and know if there was a better way to fight it other than the trial.

But after six hundred years, he also became a chosen, and he went into the trials and died as well," John finished narrating.

"So basically, his studies ended because of the trials," Jake said.

"Yes, but even before he died, he had produced such good work that many known things from the abyss are known from him.

Rumors say that his volume four and five hold some deep secrets of the abyss, some things that would be too big of an issue to release to the public.

But even for volume one, I want you to see what the abyss holds as a threat to us. Open the book, you can skip the first few pages, the real deal starts from ten," John said.

Jake did what he said and flipped the book open, going all the way to page ten. Immediately he got there, the first thing he saw was a long-legged creature, shaped like a spider but with twelve legs rather than eight. freewēbnoveℓ.com

And instead of a normal spider face, it had some sort of twisted human face. Its eyes bulged out, its mouth spread wide with razor-sharp teeth. Its entire body was black, except for the face, and the spider body was covered in lots of hairs all over.

What shook Jake more was when he looked at the size detailed below—this creature stood at a staggering twelve feet tall. Its name: Abyssal Creature, Soul-Eating Spider.

"What you see there is one of the weakest creatures to exist in the abyss—the Soul-Eating Spider. If you read down, you’ll understand that this spider consumes both flesh and soul.

William went on to detail the physical attributes of this creature—speed and more. It runs as fast as a flying wyvern, which means getting away is near impossible. It can sense prey from at least half a kilometer away." John said, he drew on his cigar, paused and then blew the smoke.

"Its exoskeleton would require at least a high-level concentrated attack spell to crack. There is more and more to it once you read down, but the summary is that it’s a creature none of us would want to meet," John added.

Jake stared at the image. He couldn’t lie, this looked terrifying. If something like this came after him, he would need Drake to stop it—or two Crypts, at least.

"This is one of the weakest?" Jake asked.

"According to William, yes. And also, multiple sightings of this abyssal creature during past trials have linked the chosen to the abyss.

Now seeing this, let me tell you something little—the abyss is vast, might be endless. So imagine an endless world where this creature is the weakest... what would the strongest be like?" John asked.
