Leading the young lady I picked up astray, making her the happiest girl in the world!-Chapter 67 - Magic Beast Tamer 1
And so, Allen left Charlotte behind and stepped out to the back of the zoo.
The plains, like the ones he saw from the train window when they first arrived in this region, stretched out endlessly.
It was still far past dusk, and there was not a single cloud in the blue sky.
On the horizon, where the sky met the land, a faint cloud of dust was swirling.
He could hear faint rumbling from the earth and numerous growls. A group was charging across the plains at full speed—heading straight toward him.
“Hm… come to think of it, fenrirs live in packs, don’t they?”
Fenrir was said to bring good luck to those who glimpse it even once.
And they were coming in groups. Allen's luck would surely increase tremendously. If he didn’t allow himself some level of escapism, he wouldn’t be able to handle this.
“Well, it can’t be helped. I’ll put up a barrier for now.”
He wove together his magical energy and created a dome-shaped barrier that covered the entire zoo.
With this, the people inside would be safe for the time being.
"Okay. Now all that's left is...!"
Suddenly, a gust of wind blew behind Allen.
He turned around instinctively――and was met with a row of massive fangs.
"Garuaaaaaah!!"
In one swift motion, the Fenrir bit into Allen.
It swallowed him headfirst, sank its fangs into his torso, and began flinging him around wildly. Ordinarily, this would mean instant death.
But Allen, still clenched in the creature’s jaws, slowly moved his right hand――
“Paralyzing Shock!”
“—!?”
Bam!
A brilliant purple bolt of electricity flashed, and the startled Fenrir flung Allen away. He tumbled into the grass, wiped the drool from his face, and let out a bitter laugh.
“Ha… Good thing I had defensive magic up. But I’ve got to admit, that was one hell of a distraction.”
"Grrrrr..."
The Fenrir that had bitten Allen.
It was an enormous beast, towering over him. Roughly ten meters tall. Though its right eye bore a deep scar, its fur gleamed a dazzling gold.
Its single eye was filled with murderous intent as it glared at Allen. This creature had likely lived for over a hundred years, and was likely the child's mother.
Allen tried speaking to it in the monster language, but...
"Listen to me! We are not your ene—’
“GRAAAHH!!”
“Tch… So it won’t talk either, huh!”
Just like the young one. This one wouldn’t even come to the negotiating table.
“In that case… I guess I’ll have to use force!”
“““GYAAU!?!”””
A burst of blue light exploded behind Allen, followed by a chorus of cries.
When the light faded, several Fenrirs were frozen solid in ice.
There were about ten of them. They were all about the same size as the ones rescued at the zoo, probably the siblings.
It was an ice trap that had been set up beforehand.
"Now, you're the only one left!"
“GRAAAAAAH!!”
With that declaration, the battle officially began.
Charlotte was working to persuade and heal the young Fenrir. Allen’s job was to buy time until she was finished.
But… this mission turned out to be far harder than expected.
“Explosive Hellfla—ah, no, Fireball!”
“GRAH!”
He started to create a huge fireball bigger than Fenrir, then quickly remade it into a basketball-sized one and threw it.
However, that level of firepower was not enough to even slightly scorch Fenrir's fur.
Allen had to hold back, but the Fenrir showed no such restraint. Allen narrowly avoided Fenrir's attacks, whether it was slamming into him, slashing with its sharp claws, or biting with its fangs.
(Damn it… I can’t cast anything more powerful than this…!)
He didn’t want to hurt the Fenrir if he could avoid it.
“Binding Ice!”
"——!"
But immobilizing spells didn’t work either. Before the ice restraints could fully form, the Fenrir broke free through sheer force.
Just as he was wondering what to do――
"Gaaaaaahhhh!!"
"Ugh"
Along with Fenrir's voice of determination, its long fur was shot out like needles.
Like a storm of arrows, the needles rained down, kicking up a thick cloud of dust around them. Then it shook wildly... and before his eyes were once again a row of sharp fangs.
"Oops..."
The defense magic was still on so he won't die.
But getting drenched in saliva again...Allen had all but resigned himself when—
“Kyuu!”
“GAAUHH!?”
"Hah...?"
A shadow leapt out in front of Allen, and Fenrir stopped dead.
Allen’s eyes went wide in disbelief.
A pure white ball of fur the size of a person. It was unmistakably――
“...A Vorpal Bunny?”
“Kyuuu~”
