Last Wizard King's SSS-Level Magic system in Modern World-Chapter 123: Not quite human - Part 1
Chapter 123: 123: Not quite human - Part 1
Zane led them toward an abandoned school building near the academy grounds.
The once-grand structure now stood in eerie silence, its windows shattered, its walls worn and cracked with time.
Moonlight barely reached the interior, casting long, jagged shadows along the exterior like grasping fingers.
A cold breeze swept through the corridors, carrying with it the scent of dust and something else—something old and forgotten.
Liam felt it immediately.
The place was pulsing with magic.
Not just the usual residual traces of spells that lingered in most places with a magical history. This was something active. Something unnatural.
Seraphina stopped beside him, eyes flickering with intrigue.
"Well, this is promising. Looks like we will find something here after all."
Zane smirked in a ’I am superior’ manner.
"Told you we’d find something here. Now, let’s head inside and try to find more stuff."
Liam frowned, stepping forward cautiously. His instincts screamed at him to turn back—to leave before something went wrong.
But he had already noticed something else.
It wasn’t just one presence inside the building.
There were many.
He glanced at Zane and Seraphina.
They weren’t surprised by this at all.
They knew.
The door groaned as they stepped inside, swinging closed behind them with a final-sounding click. Liam glanced over his shoulder.
The hallway was dimly lit, with only faint beams of moonlight slipping through the cracks in the broken windows. The walls were lined with peeling wallpaper, old notice boards still clinging to the past with faded remnants of parchment pinned to them.
Liam activated his magic sense.
Immediately, he was overwhelmed by what he felt.
Hundreds of magical signatures.
Some weak. Some strong.
None of them human.
His stomach twisted.
"What the hell is this place? How can you walk around it like nothing happened. Can you not feel all this magic?"
Liam asked as he walked behind the pair.
Zane turned, flashing him a playful grin.
"It’s fine! We’re about to find out just what secrets this place holds in a second."
From his perch on Liam’s shoulder, Asger let out a low growl.
"This is stupid and these humans have a death wish. I would rather not be here, but since we’re already in a trap, let’s at least find out who set it."
Liam didn’t need to be told twice. He already knew there was no turning back now.
Seraphina suddenly stopped, her body tensing. Her sharp eyes locked onto something deeper in the hallway, just past where the moonlight reached.
A shadow moved.
Liam’s entire body went rigid.
A low, guttural growl echoed from the darkness.
It wasn’t human.
It wasn’t friendly.
And it wasn’t alone.
A beast-like entity stepped forward from the void, its form shifting and flickering like smoke struggling to hold a solid shape. Its glowing red eyes locked onto them, sharp claws scraping against the floor as it stalked closer.
Then, two more slithered out from the darkness behind it.
Liam swore under his breath.
Three of them.
And who knew how many more were lurking further in.
"Is this what you were expecting?"
Liam asked, his voice calm despite the tension in his body.
Zane’s grin widened.
"Not exactly, but I’m not complaining. This is a good time for me to check how much I have progressed."
Seraphina let out a sigh and shook her head at her partner’s theatrics. She also seemed used to it.
"I hate when he gets like this."
The creatures didn’t wait.
They lunged.
Liam reacted instantly, magic sparking to life as he wove a spell. Chains of golden energy shot forward, wrapping around the nearest creature’s shifting body.
For a moment, it worked.
Then the beast screeched and tore through the bindings as if they were nothing.
Liam’s breath hitched because of the effort he had to put in.
"They’re not solid?"
Seraphina twirled a dagger in her hand, then flicked it forward. A burst of radiant energy exploded from the blade, striking one of the creatures directly. It recoiled violently, its form flickering even more.
Light magic works.
Zane, on the other hand, laughed.
"Finally, some action!"
He leaped forward, his hands glowing with a raw, unstable magic as he faced off against one of the beasts. His movements were fluid, dodging its attacks with ease, as if this was all just a game to him.
Liam wanted to yell at him to focus, but before he could—
Zane did something strange.
He let the shadowy beast claw at him.
The attack should have hurt.
It should have done something.
But it didn’t.
Zane just grinned as the creature’s claws passed through him like he wasn’t even solid.
Liam’s stomach dropped.
What the hell?
The shadowy beast screeched in alarm. It tried to back away—
But Zane grabbed it.
His hands, glowing with a strange, unnatural energy, crushed into the creature’s shifting form.
And then—
The creature absorbed into him.
Vanished.
Like it had been pulled into his very existence.
Liam took a step back, his pulse hammering.
"Zane, what did you just do?"
Zane wiped his hands on his coat, looking completely casual.
"Huh? Oh, that? Just a little trick I picked up."
Seraphina didn’t even look surprised.
She knew.
Liam’s hands clenched into fists. They were hiding something.
The abandoned school fell silent.
The creatures were gone.
Zane stretched, looking as if they had just finished a normal training exercise.
"Well, that was fun. But I think that’s enough for tonight."
Seraphina nodded.
"Agreed. We got what we came for."
Liam narrowed his eyes.
"You mean those creatures?"
Seraphina smiled, but it wasn’t reassuring.
"Something like that."
Zane shot Liam a wink.
"See you tomorrow." ƒгeewёbnovel.com
And just like that, they turned and walked away.
Leaving Liam standing there.
Heart pounding.
Mind racing.
Asger shifted on his shoulder, voice low and grave.
"Liam... we need to find out what they’re up to."
Liam let out a slow breath.
Because one thing was clear—
Whatever Zane and Seraphina were planning, Liam was now a part of it.
Whether he wanted to be or not.
