Last Ruler Of The Empty Throne-Chapter 54: Food I
The moon hung in the sky, trying to brighten the bleak atmosphere of the apocalypse. It was also the source of light for the people sitting in the conference room of the overall head. The glass window still had a huge hole in it, but no one bothered about that.
Maybe because of how much the world had changed, the way people reacted to things like this wasn’t like before. It wasn’t only their reaction to that, everyone knew almost instinctively that the strong were going to rule, and the weak were going to be swallowed by the strong.
Now, it was that time: the old strong had been washed away and faded, replaced by the new strong. All the fear and reverence that had been given to the old would be rewritten by the actions of the new.
And now, one last thing remained: how would this new strong person lead?
Would they be worse? Because from what many of them had seen, they were just seeing young adults with almost no experience.
As for the people gathered in the conference room, since it wasn’t large enough to fit everyone, only the important people were gathered, except for those guarding and watching the perimeters of the camp.
And fear could be seen on all of them.
It had been just about two hours since Jon killed the now-former eleven heads and their relatives or friends in public. The fear that struck the hearts of those who saw it was immense, and the worst part was that they couldn’t run away even if they wanted to.
They had to stay and watch, except for those who collapsed.
From the events that transpired, they knew the summary of what had happened, and there was one important thing they all took to heart: Don’t mess with Wrath.
It was an action that gave them a simple warning, and also one that made the hair all over their bodies stand up.
After he had finished with the leaders and their relatives, the onlookers and watchers were sent back to their business. Then he made sure the girls were okay; however, they knew what was going to happen next.
It was the next unavoidable situation, and even if they wanted to hand it to someone else, they would still be met for the final say, so what would be the difference?
"Just this time," Jon kept consoling himself. He was even vowing internally that he wouldn’t do anything again that would put him in this situation.
He had acted out, and now he was going to pay the price.
"It’s unavoidable at this point." Even Laura understood the meaning of the looks and just shrugged her shoulders while saying it, which earned her strange glares from the rest.
"Haa, we won’t even have time again," Jenny sighed at the situation. What they were about to do would leave them with even less time than they already had.
"Well, if we delegate and finish faster, we can." Cynthia nodded to herself.
And surprisingly, Jon wasn’t saying anything, because he was screaming in his head. ’NO... NOO.’ He just kept screaming it. He wanted to reject and refuse it now.
But reality was not going to change for anyone, and he had to face it.
"Haaa..." With a final sigh, he looked up at the sky.
And before he even knew it, he was sitting in the broken conference room with a lot of people. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
Whirr
The place was silent. They didn’t dare to speak after everything that man had done. Even Jenny, Cynthia, and Laura didn’t talk and were just looking at him.
"Haa..."
He sighed again before he opened his mouth to speak. "Many of you don’t know me. I am Jon Whyte, and these girls with me—"
"Jenny Stalwart." Jenny introduced herself with a smiling face, reducing the tension in the room a bit.
"Just call me Cynthia," Cynthia said with an indifferent face.
"Laura," Laura said plainly.
"Now, I don’t have to mention it again: no sexual assault whatsoever. The punishment is death." He started by saying this with a frown.
Quite a lot of people were in this conference room, including those he had left the university with, which meant Alexa was here. And from the few instances it had happened, he had begun to hate it a lot.
"Now, on our way here, we saw things we didn’t like. The people were separated into three, and from what I know, there was no logic in that." He shook his head as he recalled what he saw.
"In case you all don’t know, them not turning into zombies already makes them one of the chosen—or talented, as you like to call it. They shouldn’t be separated as different breeds," he said, scanning the expressions of the people in the room.
"If anything, in this new world, we are like the invaders, and we have to fight to take it back." And the moment he said this, a particular man in the corner of the room suddenly made a slight smile.
"From now on, so many things are going to change. From what I see, no one is making any attempt to advance in this apocalypse."
"There are so many things to do: leveling up, looking for other survivors, looking for more provisions, and that’s just from the outside. So by tomorrow, the following should be prepared: a headcount of all evolvers, policemen, and survivors in this camp, a proper record of food and provisions, and a record of ammunition in this camp."
Jenny then nodded and added, "We also recently discovered the monsters’ meat is edible."Gasps of surprise were heard all over the room. They had all been running away from the monsters and zombies, and now they were being told the meat was edible.
It was going to be a game-changer if they could eat that. The food problem could be solved that way.
After a few more things were said, everybody left.
With this summary of what they would do in the future, and with these few things now known to the people, they realized that these new leaders cared.
Maybe they were brutal to the extreme when they were angry, but they had already made their stance known. They had a limit that shouldn’t be crossed, and aside from that line, everything else was fine.
So, they all went back to the places they were allocated for the night and rested to prepare for the next day, because it was going to be a long one.
It was already the next day, and the sun was at its highest. It was shocking how much could happen over a night. One shouldn’t forget that the world had also fallen in the span of a night, just like the leadership of this camp, and now, it was a new day.
And this particular time, when the sun was at its highest, meant something in this camp.
It was time for their daily meal.
However, there was something different about the atmosphere in the camp today—it was rowdier and more congested than usual.
The reason was that this was the first phase of the plan Jon and the girls had put together. Due to the abrupt change in leadership, they had to come up with a sort of plan to involve all survivors.
And the first thing they needed for the plan to work was manpower.
That was the most important—and the only—thing they required in the whole plan.
Unfortunately, most of the manpower in the camp was abandoned at the entrance. And worst of all, they looked malnourished. They could barely walk over to get their daily meal, let alone perform the vigorous activities in the plan.
Then Jenny came up with an idea:
"You know the way the survivors gained stats from the monsters’ meat? What if we feed all of them the meat and see what happens?"
They had brought quite a large quantity of meat with them, and needing manpower so urgently, they decided to try it.
So, without wasting time, their plan began—and the best time to do that was during the food distribution.
Jon’s group hadn’t seen what they had been eating before, but from what they saw being made during the food period, it was truly absurd. They were being fed like prisoners, with no care or etiquette whatsoever in handling the food. It was so bad that they couldn’t even recognize the original food it had been made from.
So, they had to pour away the original food the survivors were meant to be served and make another one, with meat.
The people in the lower and middle tiers of the camp usually came out to get their food, while the people in the highest tier had their food brought to them.
And barely two weeks after the world had fallen, people were already looking and dressing as if they had been poor all their lives. With their skinny, disease-stricken appearances, they began pouring out of their houses.
And as they kept coming, it became a crowd, and things grew rowdy because—
"Where is the food?"
"Haven’t you heard?"
"Heard what?"
"The leader has changed."
"Huh?"
"WHAT?"
"Does that mean we aren’t eating again?"
Various voices could be heard as they awaited their meals.
Unable to get a response from each other, they looked toward the people who were dressed better and looked healthier than them, as if waiting for answers, which they wouldn’t get.
These people were the middle-class survivors in the camp, and they were also gathered in their area. They were treated better, dressed better, and ate better food than the lower tier.
They were also there for their food, but if there was something that was almost written all over their faces, it was nervousness.
After all, they were better informed about the situation.
And unfortunately, most of them were present during the public torture the previous day, and they wished they hadn’t been. Because what they saw was... indescribable.
And they also talked about it.
"Hey, what happened to you? Why do you look like this?" A middle-aged man frowned and asked his friend. He hadn’t been around the previous day, but since then, his friend had been acting weird.
It was as if he had seen a ghost.
"Mat, Mat, answer me." The man shook his friend vigorously.
"E-Eh, huh?" Mat snapped out of his daze and looked at his friend, shaking him.
"What happened? You’ve been like this since yesterday." And strangely, it wasn’t only him. He looked around and saw similar faces.
"Overall leader is dead," Mat revealed.
"W-What!" The middle-aged man looked at him with an incredulous face.
"H-How is that possible? Overall leader was—he was—" The man could remember the number of monsters the overall leader had taken down on his own. And that kind of person was dead?
"W-Who?" The man gulped as he asked. Anyone who could pull that off was surely a monster, too.
Mat started shaking his head in fear and held his friend. "It wasn’t a fight. The overall leader wasn’t a match at all. He is a monster. Don’t provoke him. He is heaven’s wrath itself."
And before he could continue—
BANG
The metal doors of the food area suddenly opened, and the servers pushing food started coming out.
But this time, there were differences; the evolvers and policemen were also coming out and taking positions around the feeding area.
"W-What is going on?"
"W-Why are they here?"
People had already started moving back from the serving point, but the servers, evolvers, and policemen didn’t even respond and continued.
And when they finally got into their positions, it was time.
"Are you not going to eat?" the server said to the crowd of hungry survivors
