Chapter 170: What legacy?

"What legacy could you be talking about?" She asked him.

Absentmindedly, Junjie picked up another salty fry. "Your mother is the best treasure hunter and spy we have in this empire. She has done some great things...."

"Spy!!" Mei Mei exclaimed...hovering somewhere between shock and horror. "My mother is a spy."

"Retired spy...your father lends a hand too every once in a while. It is why he toured different parts of the world as a visiting professor at so many universities."

Mei Mei mind drew back to her childhood, recalling all the times that her mother had been away constantly, missing special family events sometimes. Her parents used to take so many vacations that at one time, her grandmother had asked them why bothered to have children if they didn’t want to stick around long enough to raise them because they were too busy indulging in selfish pleasures all around the world.

This did not stop them, a week later, they were gone. They spent a month in South Korea before returning and when they returned, they only stuck around for one month and set off to Cambodia for half a year.

Mei Mei recalled all the times they had made spy jokes at home and how her parents had laughed it off. Now that she thought about it, who took a six months vacation in the kingdom of Cambodia at a time when there was a fight for the throne between the emperor and his nephew!!

Mei Mei’s mind swiftly worked through all of the empires or kingdoms which her parents had visited for vacations.

"C4, find me all the places that my parents have taken vacations to and see if anything happened during their stay. Anything that made the news or changed the future of a company or a politician or just anything..."

Those vacations had been working vacations. Now she understood why her mother had not hesitated to take a bullet for the emperor and why her clothes sometimes had rips and traces of blood. It also explained why she sometimes had bruises which healed quickly and yet new ones were never far off.

"Your mother did some great work for my father and grandfather. I made some mistakes that pissed her off so she officially retired. I don’t blame her, I should have weighed the advice I received more carefully." He reached out to touch Mei Mei’s hand.

Just as his finger brushed against hers, she withdrew her hand. "So, did you come to share some ice cream with an old friend or to push an agenda? I am not going to talk to my mother on your behalf Junjie, I have not even met her to beg for her forgiveness for the way we left things off the last time I saw her.

I said some harsh words to her and her constant absence in my life due to those vacations was one of the things I blamed her for. I accused her of not loving me. I looked her in the eye and said Mo Liang loved me more than she or my dad did because he was willing to drop everything and be with me when I needed him.

I said things that were so ugly that I am too afraid to even text her because I am afraid that she hates me." She sighed and buried her face in her hands. "I said that I wished she was not my mother and instead aunt Su Manchu was."

"Oh Mei Mei!" Junjie hissed and shook his head, feeling terrible for her. "You were young, you had no idea what you were talking about."

"Is twenty two truly young?" She whispered.

"Yes." Junjie said with the stamina of a thousand bulls. "You were young and stupid. Never in your life had you ever uttered such words to your mother. I guess you had some resentment in you because she missed a few birthdays and school events and maybe other things that I don’t know about. So, you lashed out at her."

Mei Mei lowered her head and she buried it on the table. With other people, saying sorry was simple but with her mother, where was she supposed to begin? How could she take back all the things she had said?

"I am sure there was some truth in them." C4 chipped in. "You did envy your aunt Su Manchu’s children because their mother was always around and she was a very hands on parent. She and her husband, they are the golden couple when it comes to raising children. If it was a competition, they would be in first place.

Your parents on the other hand, they raised you to be independent. Your mother was busy most of the time and then suddenly, she was there and she wanted to control you but you already resented her. That with all the gas lighting that Mo Liang had done was enough to make you lash out at her." fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

Mei Mei felt a hand on her back that was offering comfort.

"It’s okay. You are a parent yourself so I am sure that you would forgive Mingzhu no matter what she did as long as it was murdering an innocent person or engaging in criminal behavior. You would try to understand her and defend her. Even if she left home for ten years, you would still leave the light on, hoping that she will return someday.

Your mother is the same as you, she has missed you all these years. She still makes your favorite food and buys your favorite cake on the day of your birthday. She buys you new clothes and shoes secretly but doesn’t dare to send them.

She sometimes used to pass by the flower shop were you worked in disguise. She is the old woman that used to hand you something to eat and pay extra for flowers once every week, insisting that it was your bonus. She even gave you toys for your daughter."

Mei Mei raised her head. "Old lady Leng." She whispered.

Junjie nodded. "It is one of her super secret identities which I am familiar with. If you happen to bring this up with her, don’t tell her that I was the one that told you." He moved around and sat down again. "Besides, your mother is not the only one that has secretly been making moves without revealing her identity, you have been doing the same. You used to send flowers on the birthdays of all your loved ones. You just didn’t dare to put your name on them.

I went back and checked after the way you looked the last time we met when I told you that you never reached out. As it turns out, you have a secret account on weibo and you follow everyone in your family. Over the years, you have been wishing them well like any other fan or well wisher.

I don’t know why you Jun’s don’t like to talk things out.

Your mother will be happy to hear from you, she has been waiting for it all these years. Make the effort to reach out, don’t be afraid."
