Chapter 540: Chapter 540: Tough Mouth, Soft Heart

Wen Qi found some time to deliver food. He initially wanted to give a few words of advice to his annoying little brother, but seeing that exasperating smile on his brother’s face, he drove away without saying anything.

The young writer held a bag in one hand and waved with the other, the wind carrying his voice to Wen Qi’s ears.

"Big brother, hang in there."

Wen Qi: "..." He cursed his annoying brother with a toothache tonight.

As soon as Wen Qi was out the door, Tuanzi rushed up to Wen Li.

Though clearly tempted, Tuanzi managed to tear her gaze away with difficulty, looked up at Wen Li, and smiled brighter than a flower.

"Cousin, did you order takeout?"

Wen Li playfully pinched her chubby cheek and opened the bag himself.

"I didn’t order it; my brother offered to bring it."

The word ’offered’ was emphasized heavily.

"He knows I don’t like eating these, but you do."

Tuanzi felt quite flattered.

"Huh? Does Cousin Wen Qi like Miaomiao?"

Previously, during their brief interaction, Wen Qi’s attitude had been relatively indifferent. To be precise, it was the attitude one would have towards a distant relative.

After experiencing so much and being taught by so many people, Tuanzi understood that not everyone would like her, and she should take it in stride. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Tuanzi wasn’t narcissistic enough to think that everyone had to like her.

Even among relatives, there are those who are close and those who are distant.

At the dessert shop, her attitude towards Wen Qi was the same she would have towards a stranger big brother.

A big brother who knew how to make desserts.

Wen Li wouldn’t speak on behalf of his older brother, either to confirm or deny anything, so he simply said, "I don’t know, but this is indeed for you, have a look."

Tuanzi happily looked inside the bag, finding cream puffs with fresh cream, macaroons, cherry cupcakes, taro rolls, and several servings of ice cream. Each serving was small, as if they were worried she’d get a stomach ache from eating too much.

"Wow, it’s all stuff Miaomiao’s never tried before!"

Tuanzi was so moved her big eyes were filled with ice cream.

She didn’t know if this counted as liking her, but it was a kind gesture, one that she should accept and then reciprocate.

Her little paws immediately reached for the ice cream, taking each one out to share with her senior and cousin.

Tantai Yi looked at the ice cream for a few moments, then once more glanced at Tuanzi’s chubby face.

"Don’t you like these a lot?"

"Yeah, I do~"

Tuanzi beamed as she held her bowl, smiling so broadly her eyes disappeared, "That’s why I want to share with my senior and cousin. We can all be happy together."

No matter how much you like it, even if too many elders at home discourage you from eating it often, would you still share it with him?

Tantai Yi truly felt this sense of generosity, a feeling his blood relatives who share the same village never gave him.

Without any blood ties, his master and junior, and even his senior, had consecutively shown him what family meant.

Tantai Yi prepared to return the chocolate ice cream he held.

Having received this genuine sentiment, he wished to convey his own as well.

"You eat it," Wen Li said quietly, after glancing at his cousin who was enjoying her treat, "Eating too much at once really isn’t good, and I bet you, my brother will definitely bring more tomorrow."

Since childhood, Wen Qi often found him annoying, but despite hard words, he had a soft heart, always sorting out the messes behind him. Although he cursed others out to tears with his words untainted by profanity, Wen Qi would covertly threaten the others afterward not to snitch, else he’d have to face family summons.

And given his parents’ personalities, calling them in would result in demands for him to change his ways, probably even apologize to those people.

He didn’t want change; those people were wrong in the first place. He was determined to be a gentleman, wielding a pen instead of fists, sipping tea whilst watching those flustered folks who couldn’t win an argument.

That was the good life.

Tantai Yi couldn’t fathom what this clear-eyed young man was thinking.

After a moment of pondering, he decided to eat it himself.

On a scorching summer day, enjoying some cold treats was indeed refreshing.

A few people shared in the free takeout and wandered a bit until it was time to gather.

The director had already bought fruit, and everyone carried it to their destination.

After some discussion, Tuanzi’s group alongside Zuo Qiu’s moved into Grandpa Qin’s place on the sixth floor, while the other two groups occupied Grandma Zhou’s on the seventh floor.

Xu Huan and his brother were unwilling.

"We want to be in a group with our sister as well."

Whether it was Miaomiao or little Qiu, either was fine!

Boss Xu gestured towards Qiu Kaiyao, "Even if she has a real brother, she’s still our sister, all the same."

The two brothers exchanged glances but didn’t say, ’It’s not the same,’ in front of the cameras.

Mom had said, sometimes not saying the truth is for the other’s good. If they were certain, they could just decide outright, and for things they weren’t sure of, they’d ask her later.

Since the first episode, the two brothers had been confident in their decision, so they never told their parents.

Yet a parent knows their own child. Still, Boss Xu saw hints in his sons’ attitudes, deciding to privately inquire further.

Qiu Yu’s demeanor was as usual, not giving anything away to others.

Qiu Kaiyao and her brother didn’t react much, evidently unaware of the brothers’ subtle dissatisfaction.

The audience had mixed reactions. After some commotion, the focus returned to the rumored hauntings of Sanjiang Garden.

[Hoping they’ll uncover the truth tonight]

[This is tough. If no one hears anything tonight, those midnight footsteps remain a mystery. But even if they do hear, they can’t just burst in, can they? That’s trespassing!]

[But Miaomiao and her senior brother know martial arts, right? They should be able to tell if anyone is moving next door, maybe even peek through the windows]

[No way! I checked, the walls outside their complex’s windows are all smooth. One slip and they’d fall!]

[So what? They’re skilled! They should do more, plus, they must have the courage to take risks]

At Grandpa Qin’s on the sixth floor.

Though suspecting the director, Grandpa Qin was kind towards the younger generation. Initially, he only agreed to let Tuanzi and Tantai Yi stay for a night. Yet, when Zuo Qiu softly called him grandfather, requesting to stay over, he consented.

Could a child’s plea be the same as that tearful macho Director Ming’s request?

After receiving the fruit, Grandpa Qin promptly washed it and laid it out, bringing out some peanuts and melon seeds.

"Make yourselves at home."

Tuanzi thanked him while holding Zuo Qiu’s hand, urging Grandpa Qin to rest.

"Grandpa, you should go rest; don’t worry about us."

By this hour, the old man was well past his usual bedtime, and the kids felt a bit embarrassed.

Without objection, Grandpa Qin made sure all windows and doors were securely closed, slipped into his bedroom, leaving the program crew the living room and guest room.

The two kids huddled together to peel oranges, sharing their sections with their senior and Zuo Jingxin.

After eating, drinking, and playing with phones, it soon approached midnight.

The guests grew anxious, and the audiences striving to stay awake felt tense as well.

[Although the sound equipment is good, even if there’s noise, we’d probably still barely hear it, frustrating!]

[Such a pity]

[What is Miaomiao doing? She’s starting to move closer to the wall]
