“Mr. Campbell, good afternoon.”

The moment he saw Winston, the secretary immediately stood up and greeted him first. Winston nodded briefly and then entered his office. After hanging up his suit jacket and sitting down, he took out a cigarette. At that moment, the secretary came in with coffee and began the daily report alongside the day’s schedule. As Winston listened, his thoughts drifted elsewhere.

He was commuting every day from the island where Yujin was held. While Winston was away, the staff guarded the place, so escape was out of the question. Besides, with Angela firmly in Winston’s grasp, Yujin couldn’t even dream of trying.

According to the butler’s report, Angela was doing very well. Despite having no guardian protecting her, she ate and played just as usual. The butler, who rarely showed emotion, slyly described her as “a very resilient child.” Though unusual for the butler, Winston was indifferent. As long as the child was well, that was all that mattered. He would keep his promise to allow meetings weekly, on the condition that Yujin obeyed quietly.

As long as that child remains in my hands, there’s no way out.

Winston was in a completely advantageous position. Still, an uneasy feeling lingered. The fact that Yujin loved the child so much made him suspect something else — a suspicion he tried to suppress.

Maybe Yujin never truly loved the father.

Better to be a money-hungry prostitute. He could supply both money and sex easily. But if Yujin really loved the father, there was no way out.

Frowning deeply, Winston lit his cigarette. It’s alright, he thought as he inhaled the smoke. After all, I’m the one holding the gun now. Yujin has no cards left.

He repeatedly buried the vague discomfort lingering in his heart with alcohol. But that alone was insufficient. Yujin showed no interest in the child in the womb. When Yujin told him that, he was drinking, and even as Winston smoked right before him, Yujin said nothing. Perhaps because the child really was Winston’s.

“Mr. Campbell?”

The secretary called cautiously, noticing Winston’s frown. Winston merely waved his hand, signaling to continue. After a brief hesitation, the secretary resumed the report. Winston’s thoughts drifted back to earlier.

All possibilities are just that — possibilities. Focusing on what’s certain now makes the situation much clearer.

Whether Yujin is pregnant or not, or whose child it is, doesn’t matter. What’s certain is that Yujin has always wanted to leave Winston. And now he’s even trying to lure another man.

Ridiculous.

Winston had no intention of letting him go. Maybe if Yujin hadn’t come back willingly, but now that he rolled right into his hands, would he do such a foolish thing?

It’s not enough to imprison and watch Yujin his whole life. Then.

At that moment, the surest card in his mind flashed through.

“Wow!”

Angela burst into a loud cheer, amazed by the countless teddy bears filling a room twice the size of a soccer field. Not only that, but in the center stood a tower of teddy bears resembling a Christmas tree. Excited, she ran with all her might toward the tower. Stretching her neck up high, she repeatedly expressed admiration. Winston strolled leisurely behind her.

Winning over a child is easy.

He had dealt with countless businessmen who could swallow a hundred snakes. What’s so difficult about capturing the heart of a mere three-year-old? Until now, Angela had screamed she hated Winston, constantly fled, or hid, but he hadn’t cared much either. If he played it right, she’d come around quickly. Kids are all simple like that.

Watching the child hold the teddy bear he bought tightly in her arms, Winston was confident he was right. If he bought her something nice today and kept her satisfied, she’d give in quickly.

The specialty store for the brand of teddy bear Angela held was packed with countless toys and dolls. Winston was generous with the child who seemed already completely enchanted.

“Pick whatever you want.”

“Really?”

Angela looked up at Winston with wide eyes. He nodded with a gentler expression than usual.

“Of course. I’ll buy it all, so take your time.”

The child was practically gasping for breath. Winston smiled as he saw Angela suddenly dash off in one direction after looking around hurriedly.

Too easy.

About four hours later, Angela returned to Winston, who was calmly sipping coffee. He thought she had quite a bit of patience, but boredom was setting in. Seeing the child’s face naturally brought a smile.

“Did you pick everything?”

He asked kindly, but the only doll Angela held was a small teddy bear with a pacifier. The large bear he had brought was still strapped on her back. Winston glanced toward the bodyguards who had been trailing Angela, but they were empty-handed. Turning his gaze back to Angela, he asked,

“Did you tell the staff what toys you wanted?”

There must be more. She might have made a list or wanted to buy the entire store. Winston was about to take out his phone to instruct the secretary to buy the whole store, but his expectations were completely off. Angela shook her head and looked down at the doll in her arms.

“This is enough for me.”

“...What?”

Winston thought he must have misheard. Frowning without meaning to, Angela answered firmly.

“This is the doll I want. There’s nothing else.”

Winston was momentarily speechless. Around them, kids were running about amid piles of toys, pestering their parents. Yet this child, facing a guardian willing to buy the entire store, wanted only one doll. How could that be?

After staring intently at Angela’s face for a moment, Winston calmed his emotions and spoke calmly.

“I said I’ll buy everything. You don’t have to hold back. Just say what you want. Or do you want to come with me?”

Maybe she lacked courage alone. For the first time ever, Winston tried to understand the heart of a girl less than half his age and stood up. Angela craned her neck to look up at Winston’s /N_o_v_e_l_i_g_h_t/ face towering toward the ceiling and answered firmly.

“No, this is all I need. Thank you.”

Seeing Angela firmly express gratitude left Winston speechless. Though hard to believe, the child was sincere. As proof, Angela turned and briskly walked straight ahead.

“Where are you going?”

A bodyguard hurriedly followed and asked, and the child answered naturally.

“To the door. I bought a doll, so I have to go home now.”

The bodyguards looked at Winston in confusion. Winston, silent until then, finally frowned and shouted at the back of Angela’s head already far ahead in a slightly raised voice.

“The door’s to the right!”

At his words, Angela stopped abruptly as if hitting the brakes and darted right. Winston watched the bodyguards chasing after her and slowly walked away. His smile had already vanished.

Outside, Angela was already seated in the back seat car seat. Winston exhaled sharply, bent down, and got in the car. The child, clutching both the newly bought doll and her previous one tightly in her arms, buckled her seatbelt with care but didn’t even glance at Winston. Seeing her profile, Winston was suddenly struck by a foreboding thought.

This might not be as easy as I thought.

He quickly brushed off the unpleasant thought. What’s so difficult about a mere three-year-old girl? It’s probably just going to take some time.

Maybe she didn’t like that store.

That was a much more reasonable conclusion. Winston relaxed into his seat, already thinking about telling the butler to arrange another event.

Still, Winston hadn’t realized one thing: he was dealing with the most difficult three-year-old girl in the world.
