King of the Wilderness-Chapter 185 - 146: The New Hunting Plan
(As requested by my elder brother, after non-hunting content, a hunting Chapter must follow.)
----
After that conversation, Lin Yu’an’s home entered a wonderful and harmonious new order.
Aliya began to integrate Emily naturally into the daily life of the household in a smarter way.
After Bo returned to Montana, Aliya drove the massive F-150 every morning, carrying Ethan and Olivia with a baby carrier and took Whiskey to Emily’s clinic.
Her reasons were always impeccable: "Hey, Emily, I baked some cookies, thought I’d bring some over."
Or, "Whiskey seems a bit lethargic today, can you take a look at him?"
Gradually, this became a tacit understanding between them.
Emily completely fell in love with these two adorable little ones.
She would set aside all her work, carefully take the children from Aliya’s arms, change their diapers, and feed them.
Her clinic, which was originally quiet and somewhat chilly, was filled for the first time with the babbling of infants and the gentle laughter of women due to the children’s presence.
Honey and Whiskey happily lay beside the cradle, gently nuzzling their two little masters, like faithful nanny dogs.
Aliya would share parenting experiences with Emily, while Emily taught Aliya how to better care for Whiskey and Honey.
Their relationship quickly warmed and transformed into one akin to long-time girlfriends through these daily, trivial interactions.
That day, Lin Yu’an was busy in his warm and humid greenhouse.
After months of careful tending, the vegetables were bearing abundant fruit. He had just picked a few vibrant green cucumbers with blossoms at the end, ready to make a salad for the women at home.
Suddenly, his satellite phone rang, displaying Hunter Barton’s number.
"Hey, Lin!" Barton’s characteristically concise and powerful voice came from the other end of the line.
"Ready your hunting rifle? It’s time."
"It’s time? What do you mean?" Lin Yu’an was a bit puzzled.
"The moose, the big ones, have started crossing the river."
Barton explained, "The annual autumn migration has begun, the community shared hunting plan starts tomorrow morning. You, Stan, my son, and I will form a small team. How about it, are you interested?"
"Of course!" Lin Yu’an’s eyes instantly lit up with the flame of a hunter.
"Great, then come to my place this afternoon, we need to do some preparation and I’ll go over the rules with you."
Hanging up, Lin Yu’an told Aliya, who was playing with the children, about the news.
"Awesome!" Aliya’s reaction was even more excited than his.
"Our food storage cellar can be filled too, darling, be safe, and bring that best Winchester!"
In the afternoon, Lin Yu’an drove his F-150 to Barton’s home.
Barton’s cabin was filled with rich Athabasca native style, the walls adorned with various animal skins and exquisite bone carvings.
Stan was already waiting there early, wiping a Remington Model 700 Rifle alongside a dark-skinned, bright-eyed youth who looked about fifteen or sixteen.
"Lin, this is my son, Little Eagle." Barton introduced.
"Hello, Mr. Lin." Little Eagle was somewhat shy, but his eyes were filled with curiosity and admiration for Lin Yu’an.
"I’ve seen your TV shows, you’re so cool!" 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
"Hello, Little Eagle." Lin Yu’an smiled and patted his shoulder.
The four sat around the table as Barton began to explain the hunting plan and rules.
"Lin, first you must understand what our community shared hunting is."
Barton’s expression turned serious: "In Wiseman, we have a tradition where each autumn during the moose migration, capable hunters in the community form teams for concentrated hunting. The results of our hunt don’t just belong to us but to the entire community."
Stan added on the side: "Yes, the town has many old folks like George who can no longer hunt themselves."
"And some families have men working outside, while women and children also need meat."
"The meat we hunt will be uniformly divided; some we keep for ourselves, and the rest is distributed to everyone in the community who needs it."
"This is the rule by which we survive here— the strong help the weak, sharing excess with those in need."
"I understand." Lin Yu’an nodded solemnly, feeling an even deeper sense of belonging to this community.
Barton continued: "This tradition is not just our rule, but legally supported by the Alaska Fish and Game Department."
He took out a printed document, pointing to a section of the regulations to explain to Lin Yu’an and the camera.
"Look here, this is called Proxy Hunting, a very unique law in Alaska."
"It allows eligible residents, like those 65 years and older, to legally transfer their hunting tags to another resident to complete the hunt on their behalf."
David listened with eyes shining, instantly realizing this was perfect local feature material for a show.
Stan took over, explaining in more layman’s terms: "What it means is, even though old George can no longer climb the mountains himself,"
"He still has the legal right to hunt one moose for free each year, and he can sign an authorization, letting me or Barton hunt the moose for him."
