After much consideration, the group decided to leave Jacob behind for his own safety.

"Will you be alright?" Khalifa asked Jacob, her eyebrows furrowed in worry. The door had opened and he was about to go down, but Khalifa couldn’t bear to just let him leave like this.

He smiled and kissed her.

"I’ll wait in one of the houses in Soldier town," he said. He could live among zombies anyway.

"What about your food?"

Jacob paused, "I can go around town no problem. Don’t worry—

She manifested slabs of raw meat, making the men blink.

"I’ll come see you every day, okay?" She mumbled, very gentle and sorry for him.

It made the men around very envious, to the point a part of them wanted to stay outside too.

Jacob’s eyes warmed as he looked at her. He leaned down to give her a deep kiss again, but deeper this time, expressing his reluctance, before he finally went down to the hordes of zombies.

He was very fast and almost no one saw him. Those who saw him just thought they were hallucinating from hunger.

Khalifa watched him go to a place where there were only monsters and her heart broke. In her own base, he wouldn’t have to hide like this.

Sigh.

After a moment of depression, she shook her head, a renewed determination lighting in her eyes.

This meant that she’d just have to settle this mission as soon as possible.

When the group entered the base, they were quickly met by the soldiers. The checking soldiers had apparently recognized the newcomers and alerted the rest.

"Major!" One of the sergeants led the greeting, "Why didn’t you tell us you were here, we could’ve…"

"It’s fine," Kylo said with that deep voice of his. He then turned to his companions, eyes warming when he looked at Khalifa.

"Have someone clean up Prance’s house," he said. It was one of the decent ones, and he died in prison anyway.

At this point, a lieutenant with a bald head arrived to greet them. He saluted. "Major! The Generals are asking to meet."

He nodded and turned to the others, sending a few more reminders along the way. He leaned down and kissed Khalifa, blinding a lot of soldiers’ eyes.

But then he turned back to them and it was the Major that they knew. They blinked, thinking that they had hallucinated.

Anyway, while Kylo and his team went away for official business, the rest of the party was led to Prance’s old house.

Prance’s house had been unoccupied since his capture and subsequent death, and it wasn’t difficult to clean it up.

However, everyone knew he had philandered a lot in this very house so Khalifa made it a point to thoroughly disinfect the place.

Seeing her like this, the men’s front tail rose, imagining taking her there.

It was just Khalifa was tired from the travel and the many all-nighters and wanted to sleep—legitimate sleep—and the men had no choice but to let her be.

They respected her wishes and decided to do their own things.

Cauis went to cook (taking supplies from Khalifa’s space), cooking simple meals for everyone else along the way. Jojo was a good kid and volunteered to help him out.

Hugo arranged the arrival of his helicopter, and Kaize went to watch her sleep (with solemn promise not to violate her during her sleep), but none of the men trusted him so he was asked to investigate the happenings in the Capitol while they were gone.

As for the other people, Sid went to explore but with the goal of finding out more about what happened to his sister.

Maybe… it was only some sort of misunderstanding?

This was Sid’s wholehearted hope as he asked around, using his former popularity to get a lot of information.

(Kaize was doing similar things in another part of town. It had to be said the fangirls of the capitol were in for a treat that day).

Somewhere along the way, a sweet little voice called his name.

"Sid! You’re back!" He turned to look at the voice and smiled. It was the family from before.

"Hello," he said, looking at the man behind her, who seemed to be selling some stuff in their stall. The girl only had her father now. He didn’t dare ask about her mother, who he knew was unwell the last time he saw them.

"It’s good to see you healthy," he said optimistically, though he meant it in a way that she was still smiling.

The little girl grinned, also positive. "Hmm! My family worked so hard to let me live. How can I not be happy?"

Sid smiled at the little girl, patting her head. "Good child."

She grinned in response, a little giddy. "Are you here for good?"

"No, my team and I are just visiting." He shook his head. "We’re gathering information for a mission."

Although… somehow he had an idea he might not be taken to the dangerous mission, considering how much of a dead weight he’d be.

He looked at the girl, "Have you by some chance heard of my sister, Suli?"

Unsurprisingly, the little girl and then her father, shook her head. He sighed, of course they didn’t know.

"You are looking for your sister?"

He nodded.

The innocent girl just smiled at him, "Well, I hope you find your family soon, too!"

He smiled a little and he left, hoping to learn some more clues.

Whatever she did, Suli was family. He could only hope that she thought the same.

Kylo entered the large meeting room all poised and powerful as always. The meeting room was a large planning room. It was used almost every day even before the apocalypse.

At this time, this was used by the Capitol Council instead, to plan and decide on agendas that affected not only the base, but all the affiliated territories.

The council had a total of 10 members. Two were retired generals, four politicians, and the others were majors like he was.

Although he was never officially hailed as the leader, by action all movements did pass through him. Partnered with his power and strength, he was greatly respected and followed by the soldiers.

"We brought the items back," Kylo said, handing over a list of the resources.

Seeing the rich list, the tense shoulders of the old men were relieved.

"Good job, soldier," they said, with a few generals trying to talk to him as if he was still their subordinate.

But it was a weak attempt, as by aura alone Kylo’s triumphed over everyone else’s.

Another even tried to send him on another mission. It was Vincent, who used to have a very high position in the legislative government before the apocalypse happened.

"I’m sending you to City R," he said, "I need you to rescue many of our families there."

Kylo didn’t even look at him. "We will be heading for another mission," he said, and everyone frowned.

"What is it?"

"I can’t tell you."

"You realize you do not own the base. To use public forces—

"After what happened last time, I found keeping some information to myself saved our lives."

He was referring to the near-miss tragedy caused by the problems with the helicopters.

"I assure you, the mission is for the good of humanity. I’d rather not risk my team’s life unnecessarily," he said so and gave a furtive glance at Vincent, who immediately frowned and stood up.

"Why are you looking at me like that!"

"I was looking around the room," Kylo said, blandly. "But if you have anything to admit, I will listen."

"YOU—"

Before another argument exploded though, a deep voice cleared his throat and they turned to the source.

It was General Smith, a kind old man, with completely white hair and bent back. He had already retired a few years back, but he didn’t get to enjoy it with the apocalypse coming.

He smiled a bit in an attempt to calm them down. He waved his hand, successfully diffusing the situation.

He looked at Kylo, nodding in approval.

"Well, Major, you did very well. You deserve a good rest." He said, giving Vincent and the others a meaningful stare, before looking back at Kylo to give him a small smile.

"You’ve done plenty for humankind already, don’t you think so?"

Later that night, Kylo got to the house and saw everyone settled nicely.

"Well, we will leave in two days," he said, "Take this time to rest well."

And then they went to do their usual lots and they groaned at the lucky blokes who would be accompanying Khalifa tonight.

Kylo’s lips twitched upwards as he went to the bedroom.

Kylo looked at Khalifa who was softly snoring in bed. His eyes warmed as he gently placed his arms under her neck and thighs, lifting her up, and bringing her back to his more comfortable abode nearby.

He was followed closely by Hugo, who was the other lucky bloke. However, no one was as blessed as the soldier himself.

After all, Kylo had just done his turn the previous night.

Kylo was a lucky bastard, indeed.
