Kaijin Fighter: So I Have to Make Monsters, So What?-Chapter 1498: Spilling the Tea...Wine?
*Bing-Bong*
Okay, I thought you said you weren’t going to be doing these jump cut scene shifts anymore?
I did, but then I realized I could just pull a R!ck Ri0rdan down the line.
Say what?
Write what I can now; hope to god I get an adaptation in the future where I can fix up plot holes.
I...seriously? Kind of wishful thinking, don’t you think?
Yes, but it’s either that or maximum depression.
Fair enough...wait, who are we even switching perspectives to?
The part where our protagonist’s predecessor wonders why they made a fake body of theirs so unusually sexy.
...Dafuq?
*Bing-Bong*
...Yeah, dafuq?...
"You know, no matter how many times I examine myself in the mirror, I am still shocked at the sheer amount of detail that Xiao Liu had done to make this disguise of his," Anton commented as he admired his borrowed reflection in the wine glass before them. "You think this visage is what he had a childhood crush on, or is it reminiscent of someone that they once loved?"
"I already asked about that," Jinju Ren answered. "Apparently, he went with what was considered the most attractive to the general populace of Stampeding Bison. Something about it being easier to blend in as a beauty of foreign standards than a generally homely maiden."
"So overt it’s covert. I dig it."
After they had ditched Alain and Alder, Jinju Ren and Anton, who was currently piloting Zhen Liu’s female body, didn’t immediately return to their home base. Instead, they had decided to get a drink at an open bar inside a rather swanky-looking inn.
It was significantly less suspicious for two young women to be out drinking together, than it was for them to suddenly be darting about the city streets while trying to act as stealthy as possible, after all.
Also, they had no idea if Alain had sent people to monitor them, especially since the kaijin were more or less...indisposed.
As of this moment, none of the kaijin that Zhen Liu was connected to could be accessed due to the sudden surge of sleepiness affecting them all. Hell, not even the proto-kaijin twins were spared from this feeling.
Then again, that might’ve been due to the fact that they were getting closer and closer to becoming fully fledged kaijin.
Regardless, since they had time to kill and no clear way of knowing the status of how their allies were doing, Anton and Jinju Ren settled for sharing a drink or two.
Besides, this was actually a rare opportunity for Jinju Ren to ask some questions that she couldn’t exactly ask in front of the others...especially Zhen Liu. After all, the questions pertained to a rather interesting quirk she noticed all the Kaijin Lords in history seemed to share, and she didn’t want the current one to get into a brand new paranoia spiral. Then again, maybe he already knew.
Regardless, as Jinju Ren and the Anton-possessed Mei Yue proceeded to secure a table and order a bottle of fruit wine, the former decided to just cut to the point and ask a question that had been bugging her ever since she had been given access to the [Library of Nowhere] and was allowed to read through their historical texts, but had also been forgotten until recent events had played out.
Well, she actually had two questions.
The first, "How is it that a Kaijin Lord gets chosen?"
"Pardon?" Anton asked before sipping their wine.
"Well, ever since I learned that the Invulnerable Storm Queen was actually a Kaijin Lord, one that managed to leave a scar on my father no less, I’ve been rather curious of the details on precisely how a Kaijin Lord gets chosen," Jinju Ren explained. "I know that part of it is simply finding the library, but it can’t be that simple...can it?"
"You’re talking about how some treasures in this world have so much ego that they expect their wielders to fulfill certain criteria, yes?" Anton retorted after finishing his drink. "Well, the long and short of it is...I’m not sure either."
"Huh?"
Anton left Jinju Ren in silence for a couple of seconds in order to take another sip of wine before continuing his explanation.
"Well, that’s not entirely true, as I do have a theory in mind. Just like the current lord of this era, I have done my fair share of looking into my predecessors; hell, I have more recently gotten myself acquainted with those who came after me thanks to my current situation. And to put it bluntly, I can’t seem to find any real connective thread between us in terms of origin or temperament. That said, I have learned that each and every one of us, when we were alive at least, made sure to cause a ruckus and riot in the annals of history. At least, whenever we get embroiled in the rage of history." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
"...I see."
"And I know you’re probably not going to be asking this, but you should know that the current Kaijin Lord of this era, Zhen Liu, is remarkable amongst us for the sheer reason of being able to attract so much trouble just by travelling alone," Anton commented before signaling for a waiter to bring them a bottle of whiskey. "But I can also imagine that that particular observation was something you didn’t want to hear either."
"..."
The answer Anton had provided to her first question was the one answer that Jinju Ren didn’t want to hear. This observation, additionally, made her feel even more paranoid.
As far as her own research went, every single last Kaijin Lord prior to Zhen Liu had always been at the epicenter of a world-changing event.
The Storm Queen challenged the Floating Khan and his conquest of the Roaring Tide continent, the Damned Drunkard raged against the Nine Undead Kings of the Umbral Spider continent, and the Rainbowsmith himself was the main arms maker for the Revolution of the Five Suns.
However, such world-changing power, this ability to be at the forefront of history...had a tendency to exact a price that most people wouldn’t be able to cope with...which led to Jinju Ren’s second question, and one that scared her the most.
And it was a question that Anton had been expecting since the first one was posed.
"Is—"
"You want to know if it’s the fate of all Kaijin Lords to go out in a blaze of glory, don’t you?" Anton interjected, their voice sounding more serious than before.
"...yes."
Zhen Liu’s uncanny ability to attract trouble had become a bit of a running joke to his friends and family, a quirk that they attributed to the fact that he cultivated something as ominous as [Chaos] as opposed to aether. Even Jinju Ren was amongst this number.
However, after coming to learn that most of Zhen Liu’s old enemies had apparently, by sheer coincidence, gathered at Rainbowden, she couldn’t help but feel that either karma or the universe itself was trying to take him out.
And like any girl in love, she wanted to make sure nothing bad would happen to her beloved.
Shortly after Jinju Ren confirmed her intentions, the bottle of whiskey that Anton had ordered had finally arrived at their table, alongside two chilled glasses.
"Well...my original answer was going to be yes," Anton admitted as they proceeded to pour themselves a glass of whiskey and shot it like it was nothing more than a glass of water. "But, I don’t think I can actually be sure of that anymore now, and I have you, those other girls he is so fond of, and his family to thank for that."
"Huh?"
"Another detail I noticed about my predecessors, myself, and a vast majority of my successors, is that every last one of us kept the secrets of [Chaos] to ourselves and our kaijin under lock and key," Anton explained. "Zhen Liu is the only Kaijin Lord I know of who is doing his honest best in teaching the people he cares about how to use [Chaos]. It’s unprecedented."
At this statement, Jinju Ren couldn’t help but notice that there was an inconsistency in Anton’s words.
"Wait, what? But the curators mentioned that we were called Kaijin Consorts, or something to that effect."
At this statement, Anton raised an eyebrow.
"Little lady, I can tell you with certainity that I have had consorts and concubines before, but I have never heard of the phrase Kaijin Consort until you. You and yours are going through some uncharted territory. So if you were worried about him repeating the mistakes of his predecessors, don’t be. You might be the reason why they never play out on the first place."
"Huh."
Jinju Ren was about to verbalize her relief, but was stopped when Anton, still in Mei Yue’s body, suddenly jolted upright like they had been electrically shocked.
Thankfully, Anton had a very good reason to jolt.
"Welp, looks like our drink has to be cut short. Somebody got smoked out."
"Fuck!"
