Chapter 211: The Wild Howl ( 211 )

The night air was heavy with blood and smoke. Behind him, the barrier of thorns curled and pulsed, a living wall.

Hazuki rolled his shoulders, lifting the sword lazily over one shoulder.

He counted four.

The ogre moved first. A low bellow. Both hands on a club thick as a tree trunk.

Hazuki didn’t speak.

The ground trembled under the charge. The ogre raised the club, then brought it down.

Hazuki’s body shifted.

No wasted motion. Just one step to the side.

The impact split the ground, a shockwave kicking up dust.

By the time the ogre blinked, Hazuki had stepped in. His sword flashed—low, sharp.

The ogre’s knee bent the wrong way.

A second slash opened its gut.

It dropped.

Hazuki kept walking before the body hit the ground.

The crimson hound came next. Fast. Its claws dug in as it sprinted, teeth burning hot like iron from a forge.

Hazuki slid forward, inside the lunge. The hound bit air.

His fist struck its jaw—once.

The second punch dropped it.

He didn’t stop moving.

A flicker of steel behind him.

He turned the blade just in time to catch the dagger strike.

Hazuki ducked under the first, stepped into the second. Caught its wrist. Drove the pommel of his sword into its snout.

The sword hummed as Hazuki channeled mana into it. A faint pulse—then a roar of emerald flame erupted along the blade.

The green fire didn’t flicker.

It burned steady. Controlled. Hot.

He grinned, eyes sharp, body coiled.

Then he moved.

A single step forward. Then a lunge.

The nearest dark battle wolf barely reacted.

One clean slash.

The sword passed through bone and hide like cloth. The wolf’s upper half slid away, green flames searing through the wound before the body hit the dirt.

Hazuki didn’t stop.

He pivoted mid-sprint.

The second monster, a fanged boar-thing with plated legs, charged in.

Hazuki slid low, then came up hard with an upper slash, cleaving through its chin, skull, and spine in one burning arc.

Blood hissed against the flames.

The third monster leapt, too close now.

Hazuki turned with it.

One side kick.

His boot caught the beast in midair, ibs crunched. The body twisted, spinning off into a nearby tree, snapping branches before it hit the ground with a dull thud.

He stood there, breathing slow.

His sword still burned. The green flame wrapped around the blade like a predator waiting for its next kill.

Then his gaze shifted.

Something moved fast.

Too fast for its size.

A human-like shape, skin gray, arms too long, chest like a boulder. Its back rippled with muscle, and it swung a jagged iron cleaver the size of a wagon wheel.

Hazuki jumped.

The weapon tore through the air where he’d stood.

Mid-air, Hazuki spun.

Mana surged into his boots.

He twisted above the monster’s head and came down with a brutal snap of his heel—

CRACK.

His foot crushed the monster’s skull into its shoulders.

It dropped instantly.

But before Hazuki could land.

A snarl.

Another shape burst from the tree line, ean, fast, with mottled fur and too many teeth.

Its mouth opened wide, aiming for his throat.

Hazuki’s eyes lit up.

His lips curled into devilish grin.

He met it mid-air and drove his fist forward.

The beast’s skull folded in on itself like wet bark under a hammer. Its body collapsed mid-leap, momentum carrying it past as Hazuki landed hard on the ground.

The flames around his sword hadn’t dimmed.

Hazuki stood tall, the green fire dancing along the blade in his right hand.

His chest rose once. Slowly.

Then he tilted his head back.

"GYAHAHAHAHAHAH!!"

His laugh tore through the forest like a broken horn, echoing wild and unrestrained.

One hand gripped the burning sword.

His other curled into a clawed fist.

Then he moved.

A blur.

Hazuki launch straight into the cluster of monsters that had hesitated at the edge of the clearing.

The first one met his boot. Its jaw shattered sideways.

The second fell to a blade swipe that carved from shoulder to hip, flames cauterizing mid-swing.

A third leapt—Hazuki spun under and drove an elbow into its gut, then slammed it into the ground with his knee.

Punch. Slash. Kick. Burn.

Limbs flew.

Blood hissed against the cursed green fire.

One monster turned to run.

Hazuki hurled his sword like a spear.

It pinned the beast to a tree.

He yanked it back with a flick of his hand, caught the hilt mid-run, and slashed the next enemy clean across the spine.

The clearing emptied in seconds.

Only corpses, twitching, smoking.

Hazuki stood in the middle, eyes wide, mouth stretched in a feral grin.

Then.

He heard something.

Voices. Screams. Shouting—not far off.

A new wave. Another group. Somewhere nearby.

His grin widened—lips peeled back, jaw open in delight.

Without hesitation, he sprinted toward the sound, laughing as he ran.

Up above.

Ridan floated quietly, arms crossed, watching from behind the last layer of thorn barrier.

He exhaled long.

This black-haired human... once his crazy mode kicks in...

"He won’t stop until he’s satisfied."

Clang!

Sparks flew as a blade scraped along the steel edge of a raised shield.

"DON’T BREAK FORMATION!!"

The guard captain bellowed, voice raw from shouting.

"SHIELD UP!! SPEAR—STAB!!"

The line of beastkin guards tightened, shields braced, shoulders pressed together. Spears jabbed out between the gaps like thorns.

A monster slammed into the front line.

A boar-like beast with chitin plating and tusks curling upward.

The first rank held firm.

The second rank thrust forward piercing its throat, then driving it back with a roar.

More poured out of the trees. Too many.

Dark shapes. Growls. Red eyes. Claws.

The air was thick with blood and fear.

"Where the hell is the reinforcement!?"

The captain turned, sweat glistening on his brow, blade dripping black blood.

A younger soldier ducked behind a shield, panting.

"They’re all busy, sir!!"

"WHAT!? Why!?"

"The other gates... they’re under attack too! North, east, even the river path! Monster swarms everywhere!"

The captain cursed under his breath.

Another wave came.

"Brace!!"

The ground shook as two trolls barreled forward. One of them hurled a mangled corpse of a fallen guard like a club.

"HOLD—THE—LINE!!"

A spear shattered.

A shield broke.

One guard screamed as claws dragged him away into the dark.

They were being pushed back.

The gate creaked behind them.

shields scraping as they stepped backward, struggling to keep formation tight.

And then...

A sound.

Faint, at first.

Like laughter. Distant, wild.

It was getting louder.

Closer.

And with it, a flicker of green flame.
