Invincible through Touching Corpses-Chapter 53 - 52: I Have Another Piece of Evidence
However, Lin Xinghai didn’t immediately reveal the ace he had up his sleeve. He was genuinely pissed off about being framed like this.
’Especially this pot-bellied security officer. To get so fat in a post-apocalyptic environment like this... one can only imagine how much he’s been skimming off the top in his position.’
So, he maintained the look of surprise on his face and asked in a tone of disbelief, "They say that, and you just believe them?"
"Sorry, it’s not what he says that I believe, but our own investigation and evidence," the portly security officer, Michael, said.
"Well, if you actually investigated, you should know that he’s the leader of the Axe Gang. His members even openly collect protection fees."
"A gang boss like him... I’d be lucky if he didn’t rob me. Yet you’re saying *I* robbed *him*? Where’s the basic Logic in your investigation!" Lin Xinghai demanded.
"Sorry, I don’t know of any Axe Gang. According to our investigation, he is merely an ordinary resident of the Lower Level District, while you are a Mercenary. A Mercenary bullying an ordinary resident... now *that* sounds more logical, wouldn’t you say?" Michael said coldly.
"Tsk! Information that any random resident could tell you has been completely twisted by your ’investigation’. Should I say you took a bribe, or are you just completely incompetent?" The look of panic on Lin Xinghai’s face had completely vanished, replaced by a mocking tone.
"Insolence! Is it your place to comment on our investigation?" Michael’s face darkened, and a vicious glint appeared in his beady eyes.
"Take him away. Since he won’t confess, let’s continue to interrogate him... *thoroughly*." Michael bit out that last word with heavy emphasis.
As soon as he finished speaking, two burly, overweight security officers walked into the interrogation room.
"Wait a moment," Lin Xinghai said, unhurriedly operating Roger’s wrist-mounted computer. "I have another piece of evidence that can prove I’m not lying." He activated the holographic display and began playing a video.
’Ever since he was young, Lin Xinghai had encountered all sorts of shady characters. Otherwise, how could a normal person possibly go into tomb raiding, and then...’
’Ahem! Back to the main point. It was because he’d had so much contact with these kinds of people that he’d seen his fair share of conspiracies, schemes, and frame-ups.’
’So he’d developed a personal habit of always keeping an ace up his sleeve. He would record audio and video during important events or when doing important things, a habit to ensure he always had evidence on his side.’
’This was another major reason he had borrowed the wrist-mounted computer from Roger.’ 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
Michael stared at the video projected by the hologram, his beady eyes wide with shock.
Because it had been recorded covertly, the angle wasn’t ideal. However, 22nd-century technology was advanced enough to ensure the video quality was excellent.
Scenes like Huai Feifu raising and firing his homemade pistol, and the other Axe Gang members charging Liu Miaomiao’s group with axes, were all brief but perfectly clear.
The video had both sound and picture; everything was crystal clear.
Of course, the video conveniently left out the part where Lin Xinghai collected the compensation fee.
"This video is enough proof that Huai Feifu led his men to kidnap Liu Miaomiao and the others, isn’t it?"
"As for the Points he transferred to me and this wrist-mounted computer, he tearfully begged us to accept them after his plan failed."
"He said it was compensation and begged us not to press charges. That way, if he pulled a few strings, he might get a lighter sentence," Lin Xinghai said with a perfectly straight face.
"You... this video... why didn’t you show it to us before? Didn’t my men repeatedly instruct you to present any evidence you had?" Michael asked, his voice a little hoarse.
"Because I had faith in your investigative abilities before. So, naturally, there was no need to bring it out!" Lin Xinghai said with a smile.
But to Michael, that smile looked utterly sinister. He never imagined that Lin Xinghai would have an ace up his sleeve even under these circumstances.
"Ahem! This video is indeed crucial evidence, but we need our technical department to verify its authenticity. So, please hand over the wrist-mounted computer," Michael said, his tone stern and righteous.
Of course, he knew that as long as Lin Xinghai wasn’t an idiot, he wouldn’t hand over the wrist-mounted computer that easily.
So his mind was already racing, trying to figure out what kind of "accident" he could stage to destroy the device.
However, he was left dumbfounded as he watched Lin Xinghai cooperatively remove the wrist-mounted computer and place it right in his hands.
"I’m happy to cooperate with your work. Please, take it and verify the video’s authenticity."
"Also, before I entered the security bureau, I sent this video to our Corps Leader, Fang Tianhe; our Vice-Leader, Shen Han; Second Squad Captain Wu Yan; and Third Squad Captain Xu Haishui."
"Oh, and by the way, in addition to the video, I also went ahead and sent them an audio recording of the conversation we just had," Lin Xinghai said, beaming.
With every word Lin Xinghai uttered, Michael’s expression stiffened. When Lin Xinghai mentioned that he had also recorded and sent their conversation, Michael’s hand began to tremble uncontrollably.
...
「Ten minutes earlier.」
The eastern side of the Middle Level District was an area where many Mercenary Corps were based. The Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps had its own property here as well—a 150-square-meter building.
This modestly sized building was the headquarters for the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps. The first floor was filled with various types of fitness equipment and even had a small boxing ring.
The second floor served as the office area, where a dozen or so members of the logistics support team were working frantically.
The logistics support team was an indispensable part of any Mercenary Corps.
After all, the most important thing for Mercenaries was improving their combat prowess. If they had to handle every little thing themselves, they would have no time to train. Besides, it wasn’t like these rough-and-tumble fighters were necessarily any good at that kind of work.
Therefore, everything from post-battle analysis, resource allocation, and equipment maintenance to arranging meals and lodging was handled by the logistics team.
At this moment, these members of the logistics team were reviewing video after video.
Numerous hidden cameras were installed on the Armored Vehicles, off-road vehicles, and Mechas, providing complete 360-degree coverage with no blind spots.
The logistics team used these recordings to tally the number and Level of Zombies each Mercenary killed, as well as to note any additional contributions, such as collecting Elemental Crystals.
From this data, they would calculate the number of reward Points to be issued to each Mercenary.
Of course, some places, like the interior of the Spacecraft Research Institute, couldn’t be filmed by the vehicle-mounted cameras. In those situations, they would switch to recording with their wrist-mounted computers.
Finally, all the compiled data would be submitted to Fang Tianhe for review. Once approved, the reward Points would be distributed.
At that moment, Fang Tianhe was sitting in his office, waiting quietly. Suddenly, his wrist-mounted computer vibrated as a message popped up.
