Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Ancient Martial Arts

Lin Xinghai froze. After reaching the third basement level, he couldn’t find a single Zombie within the range of his Perception.

Of course, this was unusual, but they couldn’t just stop to investigate. They had to keep moving.

However, as they advanced, even the others—not just Lin Xinghai—discovered the same problem.

They had advanced over 300 meters without seeing a single Zombie.

"Could it be that no one was ever down here?" one of the Mercenaries whispered.

But no one answered. Everyone just silently hurried along.

Suddenly, Lin Xinghai jolted slightly.

Zombies had appeared within the range of his Perception, and it was a dense horde.

Of course, Fang Tianhe had sensed it too. He paused, then glanced at his wrist-mounted computer, his expression turning grim.

"The Zombies on this level... they’ve all gathered in the Energy Room," Fang Tianhe said gravely.

"What?" Many of them were shocked.

Others lamented their terrible luck.

After a moment of thought, Roger spoke up. "I once read a study published by the Shelter. It said that Zombies seem to be able to absorb energy, like radiation. The Energy Crystal Stones are unstable right now, so they’re emitting a massive energy field. Could that be what attracted them?"

"Regardless, a tough fight is unavoidable. Let’s go!" Fang Tianhe said, resuming his pace.

Seeing this, the others had nothing more to say and quickly followed.

They followed the corridor and soon saw the Zombies gathered at the Energy Room.

Not only had they crammed the Energy Room full, but even the corridor outside was swarming with them. They had surrounded the place in layer upon layer.

ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!

The Zombies might have been interested in the Energy Crystals, but fresh flesh and blood would always be their favorite.

Upon spotting Lin Xinghai and his group, they let out excited shrieks and charged forward.

"Triangle formation!" Fang Tianhe ordered.

Wu Yan and Xu Haishui immediately stepped forward, positioning themselves to Fang Tianhe’s left and right, but staggered slightly behind him.

The remaining five, including Lin Xinghai and Roger, used the gaps between the three front-liners to open fire, desperately trying to gun down the swarming Zombies.

But the Zombies were too fast and too numerous. They closed the distance in an instant.

Fang Tianhe showed no fear. Just as the Zombies were about to reach them, he swept his Great Saber.

SWOOSH!

Five Zombie heads flew into the air, one of which belonged to a High Level Zombie.

With Fang Tianhe shouldering the brunt of the horde’s pressure, Wu Yan and Xu Haishui had a much easier time. One raised a Giant Shield while the other transformed into a Werewolf, blocking the smaller number of Zombies on the flanks.

The three of them formed a solid defensive line, allowing those in the rear to fire on the Zombies without worry.

Lin Xinghai couldn’t help but feel a surge of emotion. ’So this is the value of having a true powerhouse on your side.’

’If we’d had an expert like Fang Tianhe with us for the last horde, Roger and I wouldn’t have had to do a thing. He could have just taken out the most dangerous High Level Zombies with a single slash each.’

’Even though there are over a hundred Zombies here now, as long as they can’t break the defensive line Fang Tianhe and the others have formed, we can kill them all in just a few minutes.’

However, things didn’t unfold as Lin Xinghai had guessed. Fang Tianhe wasn’t just defending; he was actually pushing against the tide of Zombies, advancing at a steady pace.

At the same time, he swung his Great Saber faster and faster. Slash after slash created a ceaseless river of light. No Zombie in its path could offer the slightest resistance; they were all bisected.

Moreover, he infused his Superpower into the Great Saber, creating a black blade aura. With it, Fang Tianhe could strike Zombies that were just out of the blade’s physical reach. He just had to extend the aura to quickly dispatch them.

Eventually, the blade aura formed what looked like layered black waves that swept into the tide of Zombies. In its wake, it left nothing but a floor of corpses.

Lin Xinghai’s jaw dropped. He even forgot to keep shooting.

’There’s nothing for us to do now. If Fang Tianhe can keep this up, he could wipe out the entire horde by himself.’

"Why does it feel like... we’re both just swinging blades at Zombies, but in the Captain’s hands, it’s like a completely different weapon?" Lin Xinghai said, swallowing hard.

The scene before him was truly beyond his comprehension.

"Heh! Of course it’s different. The Captain knows Ancient Martial Arts. His Sword Skill is called Thousand Layered Waves!" Roger found Lin Xinghai’s expression amusing. ’Finally, something that can shock him,’ he thought.

"Ancient Martial Arts?" Lin Xinghai repeated.

"That’s right! We used to think things like Tai Chi and Eight Trigrams Palm were just exaggerated or fabricated stories from the past—stuff you’d only see in stage performances."

"But with the advent of Genetic Potions, our bodies grew stronger and stronger. That’s when we discovered that those Ancient Martial Arts weren’t just flowery nonsense. It’s just that many of them had physical requirements our bodies couldn’t meet, which is why they felt so clumsy and ineffective when people tried to use them."

"Many Ancient Martial Arts have now been proven effective, capable of unleashing immense power. This Sword Skill, ’Thousand Layered Waves,’ is a perfect example."

"Of course, this Sword Skill wasn’t originally this powerful," Roger explained. "But it happens to be perfectly compatible with the Captain’s Superpower. By using his Superpower to simulate the legendary blade aura, he can unleash this terrifying level of force."

Lin Xinghai’s eyes lit up. "Are there any Martial Arts that would be suitable for me to learn?"

"Nope!" Roger’s answer was blunt.

Lin Xinghai felt the air catch in his throat. Having cold water poured on his high hopes like that felt awful. "Why?"

"The entire Shelter only has about a dozen Martial Arts manuals, and none of them are for daggers. That’s why I don’t know any Ancient Martial Arts either," Roger said, brandishing his Vibrating Dagger.

"Then what types of Ancient Martial Arts are there?" Lin Xinghai pressed. ’I can always switch weapons,’ he thought.

"If you really want to learn, I can take you to have a look when we get back. The Shelter has a flat fee: 10,000 Points to learn one Martial Art. But I think you should really think it over."

"Look at Wu Yan and Xu Haishui. One bought a shield-based Martial Art, the other a claw-based one. They’ve been practicing for half a year and have barely scratched the surface."

"Ancient Martial Arts aren’t easy to learn. Even if you practice every single day, it takes at least two or three years just to reach the Entry Level. Unless you have the Captain’s talent—and even he took a full four months just to be considered at the ’Entry Level.’ As for reaching ’Minor Success,’ that’s still a distant dream for him."

"So, instead of wasting time and money on Ancient Martial Arts, you’re better off honing what you’re already good at. Like your Gun Technique, for instance. If you were to practice seriously..." Roger had been on a roll, but he trailed off, stuck.

’Lin Xinghai’s inhuman talent for Gun Technique didn’t really need serious practice.’

"Ahem! Anyway, I just don’t think it’s a good deal," Roger concluded, forcing the point.

But out of that whole speech, Lin Xinghai only really heard one thing: ten thousand Points.

’That’s so fucking expensive!’

But watching Fang Tianhe’s godly display of power—in the short time they had been talking, he had single-handedly carved his way into the Energy Room—Lin Xinghai made up his mind.

’No matter what, I have to buy it!’
