Invincible Dad-Chapter 701 Thunder Beast_1
Bad luck.
It was just terrible luck.
He had been randomly injured by the aftershocks of a battle, had been on the run for months with a woman of unknown origin, and was now being hunted by a Venerable.
Xu Yanyang sighed as he gripped the hilt of his blade.
This was the same blade he had used three hundred years ago to defend Chang’an City. With this blade, forged from common iron, he had guarded Chang’an for a century, slaying countless invaders from the Foreign Clans.
"What, you think you can fight us?" one of the Venerables sneered.
He didn’t even bother using Spiritual Energy. As the mocking smile spread across his face, a terrifying pressure descended.
It was the sheer pressure of a higher Boundary.
Xu Yanyang’s face turned deathly pale in an instant. His hand trembled so violently he couldn’t even draw his blade.
He knew, of course. No matter how monstrous a genius was, it was impossible to kill an enemy three major Boundaries above, let alone escape. They had been toying with him from the very beginning.
"Can you at least tell me why?" Xu Yanyang asked, his head bowed and his voice hoarse. "Who is the young master you serve, and who is Shen Qing? I want to die knowing the truth."
The two Venerables shook their heads in unison. They didn’t know why their young master harbored such intense killing intent toward that young lady of the Shen Family. But the young master had been clear. Not only was this human at the Nascent Soul Realm who’d gotten tangled up in this to die, but the young master’s prospective Dao companion was to die as well.
That’s right. Shen Qing was, in name, the young master’s Dao companion.
One was the Pearl of the Wind Attribute Shen Family from the Second Domain; the other was the Saint Heir of the Divine Thunder Pavilion from the Third Domain. In the younger generation of the Immortal Domain, their Cultivation talents were top-tier. Both had stepped into the Divine Bridge Realm at a young age and were considered a perfect match.
In the Southern Immortal Domain, the Shen Family, adept in Wind Attribute Divine Skills, were not inferior to the Divine Thunder Pavilion in terms of heritage and strength. After all, they were an Ancient Family with a legacy spanning dozens of epochs. Though they had never produced a Great Emperor, they had seen three Quasi-Emperors of the Sixth Heaven.
"Is the young master’s identity something an ant like you is worthy of knowing?" a Venerable said indifferently. "And Shen Qing’s name is not for you to speak. In your next life—"
Before he could finish, Xu Yanyang suddenly drew his blade in a flash of cold light.
BANG!
The blade struck an invisible barrier just three inches—ten centimeters—from its target. Xu Yanyang’s surprise attack had failed.
COUGH.
His expression darkened as he spat out a mouthful of blood; his cultivation Boundary had suffered a backlash. A moment ago, Xu Yanyang had forcibly mobilized his Golden Core, resisting the pressure of a Venerable Realm expert to land that one strike.
The difference in their Boundaries was simply too vast. Even at full strength, he could not cross this heavenly chasm.
"It’s over," Xu Yanyang sighed, his body slumping.
The Venerable from the Thunder Sect was expressionless, but inwardly irritated.
An ant at the Nascent Soul Realm actually had the audacity to try and kill me. An ant should know its place.
He reached out, wrapped his hand around Xu Yanyang’s neck, and said, word by word, "Indeed. It’s over."
"I’ve heard that in the Southern Immortal Domain, the Wind Attribute Shen Family and the Thunder Sect have always stood together," a leisurely voice drifted over. "But this business of the Thunder Sect’s Saint Heir wanting to kill the Shen Family’s daughter... does Lei Fengyun know about it?"
Lei Fengyun was the Sect Master of the Thunder Sect, a powerhouse at the peak of the Immortal Venerable Realm. He was a prominent figure not only in the Third Domain but throughout the entire Southern Immortal Domain. However, the leader of the Shen Family was no less formidable, also a peak Immortal Venerable. Both of their factions stood at the apex of the Immortal Domain.
"You’re that fellow from the tavern," the Thunder Sect Venerable said, raising an eyebrow. "The Thunder Sect is handling its affairs. Leave now. One more word, and you die!"
"Xu Lai, why bother?" Xu Yanyang said calmly, showing no fear of his impending death. "You didn’t have to come."
"I owe the tavern a mid-grade Spirit Stone."
"..."
Xu Yanyang was stunned for a moment. Then, understanding what Xu Lai meant, he burst out laughing. "Don’t tell me you don’t have any Spirit Stones on you."
"I do, but I can’t get change," Xu Lai said with a shrug. If he handed over one of the Immortal-grade Spirit Stones he carried, the Shop Assistant would probably think he was there to wreck the place. It would be like trying to buy a fifty-cent lollipop with a hundred billion tons of gold, and the cashier wouldn’t even be sure if the gold was real.
"You’d risk your life over a single mid-grade Spirit Stone?" the two Venerables said, frozen in disbelief.
In all their years of Cultivation, they had seen plenty of people who weren’t afraid of death, but they had never met someone so foolish. They were Venerables who had ignited a ten-thousand-zhang Candle of Fortune. Wasn’t it good to be alive?
"I have some confidence," Xu Lai said.
Xu Yanyang stopped trying to persuade Xu Lai to leave. He was a smart man. The fact that Xu Lai dared to show up meant his Boundary was likely not low. Perhaps there was a real chance he could get him out of this.
"Interesting." The Venerable holding Xu Yanyang by the neck glanced at his old Daoist friend and chuckled. "Old Zheng, go and finish him off."
"Mm."
The man called Old Zheng clenched his fist. Blinding lightning erupted in his palm, making it seem as if he were standing in a sea of thunder.
It was the Thunder Command Technique, the foundational art of the Thunder Sect. In the Immortal Domain, the Thunder Sect reigned supreme when it came to Thunder Element Divine Skills.
This Venerable was very cautious. Aware that the newcomer was hostile, he used his full power, unleashing a thunderous barrage of Divine Skills at Xu Lai, each strike powerful enough to destroy a star. It wasn’t just one strike, but over a hundred in quick succession.
The spot where Xu Lai stood was instantly transformed into a new sea of thunder. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Logically, anyone below the Venerable Realm facing a full-powered attack from such a cultivator would be utterly annihilated in a blink.
But the attacking Venerable Zheng’s expression gradually grew grim. He had the unnerving feeling that his lightning strikes weren’t hitting their target—it was like they were passing through empty air.
"Something’s wrong," Venerable Zheng said, his voice heavy. "There’s something strange about this kid. Let’s take him down together. Leave no loose ends."
"Alright."
But before the other Venerable could act, an intense sense of dread washed over him.
The sea of thunder that had engulfed Xu Lai began to twist and transform, coalescing into an enormous beast. It towered over a thousand feet high with a ferocious face, three sacred purple horns on its head, and a body so dense it was almost tangible.
"He... He knows our Thunder Sect’s Divine Skills!" The two Venerables’ pupils shrank.
The Thunder Sect had three trump-card Divine Skills, one of which was to cultivate a ’Thunder Beast’ within one’s body. It was called Refining Thunder.
Only a Celestial Venerable, and a core Elder of the sect at that, was permitted to learn it. It required ten thousand years and countless celestial treasures just to reach minor mastery. Once the Divine Skill took form, it was terrifyingly powerful.
For instance, the Thunder Sect Master Lei Fengyun’s Life-Bound Thunder Beast had once slain a Quasi-Emperor who had just stepped into the first heaven. Though it was an ambush, taking advantage of the Quasi-Emperor’s vulnerable state right after he had passed his tribulation, it was still a testament to the Thunder Beast’s might.
"No, this isn’t a Thunder Beast refined from Essence Blood. I’ve seen my master’s Thunder Beast... this one is even more terrifying than his."
As Venerable Zheng spoke, his mouth went dry. He looked at Xu Lai in horror. "You... Who in the world are you?"
"Xu Lai."
