Invincible Dad-Chapter 596: Moon Clan Attacks the City_1
The Formation drew upon the starlight. Countless beams of mysterious luster showered down from the vast void, converging into Chang'an City like rivers flowing into a sea. The city's original protective Formation materialized, resembling an upside-down bowl with a resplendent, sacred golden radiance.
Replacing the old city protection Formation with the main defensive Starlight Array would require at least half an hour. To be safe, all six of the city's Watchmen had arrived. Strictly speaking, however, there were only five and a half, as Zhang Suzi could not fully unleash her peak Divine Gate Realm power. All other Martial Artists in the city stood ready for battle.
Only a handful of people had initially known about the plan to change the Formation, and it was absolutely impossible for a traitor to have informed the Moon Clan. Nevertheless, Chang'an maintained its highest level of vigilance.
"Fairy Sister, you can do it!" Seeing Ruan Lan's forehead drenched in sweat, Zhang Suzi, who knew her temperament well, kept encouraging her.
Ruan Lan was utterly exhausted. Her spiritual energy, just replenished by an elixir, was immediately drained again by the Starlight Array. But amidst the encouraging cries of 'Fairy Sister,' she felt invigorated.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Fifteen minutes.
The original city-protecting Great Array gradually blurred, its golden light dimming, superseded by dazzling starlight. With only fifteen minutes remaining, the Formation replacement would be complete.
"Just a little more!"
Ruan Lan opened her mouth again, and Qian Xiao placed ten elixirs inside. Xu Yiyi wasn't idle either, standing behind her aunt to protect her.
"Very good." The wrinkles on Zhang Henshui's face smoothed out.
According to Ruan Lan, once this Starlight Array took shape, it could self-repair even if damaged. As long as the starry sky did not perish, the Formation would last forever! Compared to the Formation arranged by Sect Master Shen Xun of the Formation Sect, the defensive capability of this Starlight Array was clearly far stronger.
"This Daoist's mastery of the Array Path might even surpass Shen Xun's!" a middle-aged man said, narrowing his eyes, his voice holding a hint of shock. He was Zhao Wumian, the Watchman of the Chou Hour.
"Probably even stronger than Shen Xun," an elderly woman with a full head of white hair said amiably. "Is she a disciple of the Formation Sect? Her future achievements are limitless."
This woman was Watchman Shen.
"Her name is Ruan Lan. She's Xu Lai's sister-in-law," Zhang Henshui said wistfully. "I once had a brief encounter with Xu Lai when he was just a Martial Ancestor. I never expected…"
"Xu Lai!?"
All four Watchmen inhaled sharply.
Xu Lai. The man of the One-Thought Condensing Dragon Vein. His skill in Formations had long surpassed their understanding. A sense of realization dawned upon them. No wonder Ruan Lan's Formation was so powerful—she was related to Xu Lai. It all made perfect sense now.
"That little girl is Xu Lai's daughter. Her cultivation level is probably no lower than ours," Zhang Henshui dropped another bombshell.
"A six-year-old at the peak of the Divine Gate Realm?"
"No, a six-year-old in the Golden Core Realm!"
"..."
Silence fell upon the scene.
The cultivation level at the start of the Golden Core Realm was comparable to the peak of the Divine Gate Realm, and their combat powers were not much different. In reality, however, they were worlds apart. The peak of the Divine Gate Realm was nearly the limit for Earth's Martial Artists, with few ever able to advance further. This was because their bodies contained shackles. The Moon Clan, however, had no such shackles. For their cultivators, the Golden Core Realm was only the beginning of their journey.
"That little boy doesn't cultivate Divine Skills; he seems to follow the path of brute strength, and he is also at the early Golden Core stage," Zhang Henshui continued.
The four Watchmen felt their minds reeling. Since when were Golden Core Realm cultivators as common as cabbages by the roadside?
"Senior Xu Lai's cultivation is far beyond our imagination," Zhang Henshui didn't elaborate further. Instead, he remarked wistfully, "He might truly be able to keep Hua Country safe for ten thousand years."
The other Watchmen didn't understand where Zhang Henshui's comment was coming from. Just as they were about to ask, a shout erupted from the city walls. "The Foreign Clans are attacking! The Foreign Clans are attacking!"
BOOM!
Apart from Zhang Suzi, who remained by Ruan Lan's side, the other five Watchmen soared into the sky. The next second, their expressions filled with horror. A dense horde of Moon Clan members was rushing toward Chang'an City at extreme speed. There were far more than ten or twenty thousand of them.
Eighty thousand? One hundred thousand? Possibly even more!
There was no time to wonder how the Moon Clan had gotten the information. Zhang Henshui flew to the east gate of Chang'an City and sat cross-legged, an ancient zither resting on his lap. His fingertips swept fiercely across the strings, and spiritual energy pulsed outward with the music.
Several li away, the heads of the hundred closest Moon Clan members fell from their shoulders, but the others charged forward, undeterred by death. The other three city gates were each guarded by a single Watchman. One wielded a sword. One carried a spear. And another held a giant axe.
"Defend the city!" Zhao Wumian stood in the air inside the city, his voice thundering through every corner. "Five hundred Martial Artists to the north gate! Three hundred to the west gate! One thousand to the east gate!
"Wang Yu, take a hundred men and protect the commoners inside the city!
"Su Zi, protect Ruan Lan!
"Hold on for the last ten minutes! Once the Formation is active, nothing below the Golden Core Realm can break through!"
In a flash, Zhao Wumian issued a series of commands.
"Yes!"
The Martial Artists in Chang'an City, all at least Eighth Grade, had experienced countless sieges by the Moon Clan and acted with methodical precision. Even the tens of thousands of ordinary people showed no panic. They simply bolted their doors and windows, staying obediently in their homes.
"What's going on?" Ruan Lan panicked. "A siege? Who's attacking the city?"
"The Moon Clan is here," Zhang Suzi said, her face drained of all color.
She had grown up in Chang'an and witnessed at least a hundred attacks by the Moon Clan, but she had never seen an assault involving more than ten thousand of them. The sheer number this time... this wasn't a probing attack like in the past. The Moon Clan was launching a full-scale assault!
"Ruan Lan, hurry and finish the Formation!" Zhang Suzi urged, her voice so tense that she momentarily forgot to call her Fairy Sister.
"Okay," Ruan Lan replied, forcing herself to speed up the process of setting the Starlight Array.
But Chang'an City was immense, spanning over fifty square kilometers. Setting up such a Great Array took time. Her gaze drifted unconsciously toward the battlefield outside the walls, and her eyes went vacant.
It was simply too brutal. So brutal that Ruan Lan felt a wave of nausea, the urge to vomit rising in her throat.
Before coming to Chang'an City, Ruan Lan hadn't known much about the Moon Clan, only that cultivators from another star wanted to invade Earth and that many people from Hua Country had died as a result. But when the stories told by Xu Wandao became a stark reality right before her eyes, all descriptions seemed tragically heroic.
The city's three thousand-plus Martial Ancestors, led by the Watchmen, defended the four gates, facing an enemy force many times their own number. The Moon Clan swarmed them in a dense, unending tide. If not for the four Watchmen at the gates and the other Divine Gate Realm powerhouses striking from the shadows, the defense line of Chang'an's Martial Artists would have collapsed in the first clash.
Even so, over a dozen of Hua Country's Martial Ancestors died gruesomely outside the city. One of their severed heads was sent flying, landing at Ruan Lan's feet. Blood spattered her face, still warm. The head's eyes were wide open, as if refusing to rest in death.
