Chapter 102 - High Hrothgar 2!
"I am just saying, you should get some sleep." Stephan was lecturing me about sleep. I brushed him off as I read through another book from the library.
I responded, "You can skip sleep for a day or two you know. It won't kill you."
Viree walked into the library and spoke, "Don't bother, he doesn't even take off his armor when he sleeps. He only changes the clothes he wears underneath them."
I felt Stephan's eyes on me as he spoke. "What are you paranoid you will be stabbed in your sleep?"
I nodded as I placed the book I had just flipped through to the side. I picked up a new book as I responded. "I am, a guild called the dark brotherhood exists. They are assassins and you never know how far someone will go to kill you."
Viree gave a slight nod of her own. "I can see that, I would've paid an assassin to kill my father."
Stephan frowned, "That is a lot to unpack and I don't think i want the full story."
I ignored the two and picked up a third book and raised an eyebrow at it. I placed it on the stack and picked up another book. Arngeir peeked into the library, "It is time for breakfast, would you three like to join us?"
Viree rubbed her hands together, "I would love breakfast what is on the menu?"
Stephan paused, "Wait, I know we brought some supplies up here. However that was like spices and stuff. What do you actually eat up here?"
Arngeir let out a soft laugh, "Borri takes care of a garden which grows all our food." He looked at Viree though, "I do not wish to surprise you, but we do not eat meat. The only protein we eat is from beans and eggs."
Viree frowned, "That's fine I guess."
Stephan interjected though, "How do you grow the crops? It is like freezing cold up here."
I laughed in response, "They just built a small green house and Borri whispers words of power to the crops. They would likely grow in days."
Arngeir nodded, "Yes, a long time ago when dragons acted as rulers. They would sometimes use their voice to grow crops in mass for their subjects so they did not starve."
Stephan rubbed his chin in thought, "I suppose that makes sense. Weren't the dragons tyrants though? Why would they grow crops for their subjects?"
I responded again, "A well fed subject is a loyal subject. Most rebellions start from starvation or taxation. Dragons had no sense of taxes so it only ever mattered if their subjects starved. That and a well fed subject is a fat snack for a dragon."
Stephan frowned, "Oh, I think I'll just go eat breakfast."
I looked back at Stephan as he left. Viree had already disappeared it seems. Hunger usually overpowered her curiosity. Arngeir remained however and looked at me. He shook his head, "You have very selective reading."
I shrugged, "Well, I don't believe the greybeards get much use of them. Which brings me to ask if I can just take them."
Arngeir sighed, "Yes, you may take them. With our pacifism you are right, we don't use those books. Perhaps they are the same books that lead Ulfric to do what he did. I do not know, but books are made to be read. Keep them if you wish, will you climb the mountain once more?"
I nodded, "I have things to learn from the grandmaster."
Arngeir nodded, "Eat breakfast before you go. Learning requires a healthy mind and body, you have already skipped sleep. Do not for go the need to eat."
I picked up another book as I responded, "I will eat. I am almost done selecting my literature. Learning is also possible, no matter the cost."

Arngeir sighed, "I will save you a bowl."
He left as I picked up another book. This was the last book I felt any desire to read from the library. The rest were simply useless or skill books I had flipped through to get the bonus. I looked at the stack and regrouped them.
Four of the books were about magic. A different stack were geographical maps and location of burial sites, nordic ruins and dragon burials. The third stack were informational, like the ruminations of the elderscrolls. The last two books though, they were books that gave me quests I didn't recognize.
I stored all the books in my inventory except the last two. I picked up the two and began reading through them as I headed toward the High Hrothgar meeting room. Everyone was seated at the table, so I sat next to Viree as I flipped through the first quest book.
The first pointed me to a dwemer ruin. It was buried under the sea if my map was correct. The ruins were that of a old dwemer factory. It seemed to be a second aetherium forge, though it could just be a normal forge. It was just described as a potent dwemer factory.
I frowned as the last page was torn out and I sighed placing it into my inventory. If the book is required I will get it. I could stop by the location after leaving Winterhold while going back to Solitude.
I grabbed a spoon and collected a clump of potatoes as I read the second book. It was a journal to be exact and it detailed the journey of a sword named Chrysamere. I knew the sword well, one could acquire it in most games. The exceptions being four, five and six. The journal filled in the gap of time, at least up to the current point in time.
The sword was being delivered to the College of Winterhold. Which meant I had to make a detour within the city. The sword was lost on delivery during the great collapse. The banished apprentice who failed to deliver the sword was the writer of the journal. After wandering a while he came to High Hrothgar to seek guidance from the greybeards. He ultimately left this journal behind and headed west to return to his home in High Rock.
I snapped the jounral shut just as I finished my breakfast. "I'm going up the mountain. I'll talk later." Viree held up a thumbs up as she ate her third bowl of potato oatmeal. She was really the only one left at the table. Everyone else had left to do other things.
I stored away the journal for later. I would need it to locate where Chrysamere fell. It was rather sad that the sword was so close to reaching its destination only to be lost just before arrival. The sword itself though would be great to acquire.
I pulled out the lexicon as I walked. Reading through the books while I climbed would be great. However without clear skies I would need to pass through the frosted wind. Pages would flip around randomly and possibly get damaged. Which left me few options.
I marched out into the snow and up the mountain.
