Chapter 414: 414. Spatial arts and the invasion of ROBOTS

"You are mistaken about one thing, Young Theo," Scholar Vale said calmly after listening to Theo with great patience.

"Spatial affinity and spatial awareness are not the same thing, Young Theo."

"What?" Theo asked as the man added that seemingly out of nowhere in the end.

The calm smile on the scholar’s face never left.

"Young Theo, three things happen when a person gains spatial affinity," he said.

"You gain better compatibility with spatial beasts; that is a given." He lifted one finger as he spoke.

"Then there are the less obvious effects. Your sense of direction improves, and you become aware of distortions in space or unusual movements."

"And finally, you can train far more easily in spatial arts," he finished with a smile.

Theo listened to the first two points without much of a reaction, as they felt normal, but the third one struck him like some kind of conspiracy theory.

"...What do you mean by spatial arts, Scholar Vale?" Theo asked curiously.

The scholar just smiled in return.

"Would you like to hear a story about an outer devil attack, Young Theo?"

His words made Theo even more curious.

Silence lingered for a few seconds, and it seemed the man wasn’t going to continue until Theo approved.

Theo nodded, letting him start the story.

"About 150 years ago, an outer devil attack occurred in a prominent city, one whose name has now completely vanished from the society."

"By then, we humans had done our best to ensure that no outer devil could ever enter our planet from the mysterious world outside."

’And that mysterious world outside is space... but how do I explain that to these guys?’ Theo thought. He had some basic knowledge of space, knowledge that certainly wasn’t basic for this world.

"We tried our best to stop the attacks. The two outer devils that appeared and attacked were killed within a week, but they were incredibly strong. It took 129 tamers and knights to bring them down using the Benevolent Artifact. Then we got to know they know how to manipulate space and can enter directly into the location they want to get to without getting caught. That is where us spacial affininty individuals come into action."

"Just two?" Theo muttered before he could stop himself, the other part was important, but 129 tamers and knights got killed because of 2 outer devils?

The scholar maintained his smile, but now it carried a hint of sadness.

"We do not teach these things in the academies. And in my opinion, that is our society’s greatest flaw, Young Theo," the scholar said with the same smile, but this time his eyes had sharpened.

Theo was beginning to understand how the man expressed his emotions. So far, it was definitely the scholar’s eyes that revealed the most.

"We do not give outer devils the kind of attention we need to give as a society. Things are still constantly happening behind the scenes, but not openly, as a society. Not collectively."

"I have predicted that if the world leaders were to fall, and the people like your father, who do so much to oppose them, would no longer be with us anymore; our globe will be gone within a year, Young Theo."

Theo stared at the man with seriousness.

"I appreciate you for the information... but are you allowed to tell me all this, Scholar Vale?"

The scholar laughed for the first time since his arrival.

"If we cannot tell a national asset about such matters, then there would be next to no one we could discuss it with, Young Theo. Because of the nature of your duties, you must gain this information faster than the ordinary civilians."

Silence lingered between them for a minute.

Theo leaned back and took a sip of his drink.

As he did, the scholar noticed the lines of veins and muscles running along Theo’s arms and couldn’t help staring at them with fascination.

When Theo noticed the gaze, the scholar’s smile grew even wider.

"You have trained yourself much like a Merrick. I have seen your siblings once during a ceremony, and they have a physique much similar to yours. How much do you train?" scholar Vale asked.

Theo could tell that the man’s curiosity was genuine.

"I train four hours with my sword and then two more hours on body every day, Scholar Vale," he replied with a smile.

The scholar didn’t stop there. It was as if his instincts had suddenly awakened in that moment.

"And what is the secret to attaining aura this early?" he asked, making Theo stare at him with an amused smile.

After a few seconds passed, the scholar was about to give up and move on with the conversation, but Theo had something else in mind.

"You need to be on your deathbed to attain it this fast... well, if you’re not a genius," Theo said.

The scholar looked at Theo with his eyes wide open while Theo calmly took another sip of tea.

Theo gestured for the scholar to drink as well before it grew cold, and the man complied.

"But I wouldn’t recommend anyone pushing themselves to their deathbed just to attain aura faster, Scholar Vale," Theo continued. "I had my father to protect me and provide me with resources in the end. Many aren’t that fortunate."

Silence followed for more than just a while, and the scholar seemed deep in thought. When he looked at Theo again, there was a new light in his eyes.

"You are so young, yet you possess such clear and distinctive thoughts... I commend you for that, Young Theo," the scholar said.

He finished his tea, only to realize that another cup had already been prepared and placed before him.

"Your type is exactly the kind of person the kingdom will need when the times of struggle begins..."

This time, it was Theo’s chance to be curious and ask what he had on his mind.

"When do you think the outer devils are going to attack us, Scholar Vale?" he asked.

The scholar looked at him and tilted his head slightly.

"I believe you are mistaken about something, Young Theo."

"We are never free from attack by the Outer Devils."

It was at that moment that Theo felt goosebumps rising along his arms.

"The Outer Devils are not merely beings that exist outside our world," the scholar continued. "They create fake puppets, beings that are controlled by them to attack us. We call them the Inferior Devils."

"They are nothing but a set of metal frameworks and lining that is also made entirely of metal. Beings you will never find anywhere except among the Outer Devils."

When Theo heard that, he nodded thoughtfully. Yet only one word came to his mind right after hearing Schlar Vale’s description.

Robots.
