Imperator: Resurrection of an Empire-Chapter 432 - 427 -
The light intensified as Julius stepped closer.
Not abruptly—there was no sudden flare or blinding flash—but with the quiet inevitability of something waking after a very long sleep.
The lines etched themselves deeper into the stone, resolving into layered geometric patterns that spiraled inward toward the seam dividing the door in two.
The ring on Julius’s hand grew warm.
Then hot.
He flexed his fingers once, jaw tightening as sensation bled through metal and skin alike, but he did not pull away.
"This is it," he said quietly.
He raised his hand and placed the ring flat against the door, aligning it with a shallow depression that had formed at chest height—so subtle it would have been invisible without the light.
For a breathless moment, nothing happened.
Then the stone accepted his ’key’
The glow flowed outward from the point of contact, racing along the lines like water filling dry channels.
The entire door hummed—not audibly, but in a way that set his teeth on edge and made the air feel thick.
A low thrum resonated through the chamber.
The seam down the center widened.
Stone slid against stone with impossible smoothness, the two halves of the door retracting into the surrounding rock as though they had never been solid to begin with.
Cool air rushed out.
Not stale.
Not trapped.
But preserved—dry, faintly scented with old parchment and mineral oil, untouched by the centuries above.
Serena exhaled sharply. "Wow..."
Julius couldn’t help but respond "Yup, *Inhale* thats what it smelled like a thousand years ago."
He was staring past the threshold.
Beyond the door lay a corridor—not long, but wide, its walls lined with pale stone shot through with veins of faintly luminescent crystal.
The light did not come from torches or sconces, but from the architecture itself, a soft, even glow that banished shadow without harshness.
Like a hall of mirrors reflecting the light of the sun from outside.
Allowing for a constant natural glow without the harshness or flicker of flames.
Wasting no time, they stepped inside.
The door sealed behind them soundlessly.
Serena flinched, turning, but Julius raised a calming hand. "It won’t lock us in. These vaults were designed to be entered multiple times—by those who belonged, so long as i don’t leave the ring outside we’ll be fine... and no chance of that happening unless i forget my hand there as well."
Serena didnt find any comfort in his words or his joke, pushing his shoulder a little in an attempt to force him in first, just in case there were any traps, he’d be the first to get hit by them.
They moved forward slowly, boots stirring dust that had clearly been disturbed before.
That was the first sign.
Footprints.
Not fresh—nothing recent—but unmistakably humanoid, partially eroded by time yet still visible in places where dust had settled unevenly.
Serena knelt, brushing a finger near one print without touching it. "Someone’s been here."
"Yes," Julius said. "But not recently. Centuries, perhaps."
The previous visitors footprint were visible, but only so much as more lightly dusty areas than the rest, like footprints in the snow.
He scanned the walls, the ceiling, the junctions where stone met stone.
Looking for any signs of other things that were touched by the previous visitors.
If any were they could check those particular areas, looking for any signs of triggers or traps, perhaps anything else that would better known than unknown.
Julius was even eager to find out about some hidden rooms hiding valuable goods that were removed from the more common areas of the vault.
Sadly aside from the footprints no other signs were found.
They kept following them until they finally came to a stop.
The space before them was enormous—far larger than the hillside above should have allowed.
The ceiling rose into shadow, supported by slender columns carved in styles that predated anything Serena had seen in modern architecture.
The floor was tiled in pale stone, most of it obscured by age and dust, but intact.
And lining the chamber were treasures.
Not gold piled in heaps.
Not racks of weapons or armor.
But culture.
Paintings framed in metal that had not tarnished, their pigments vivid despite the centuries—depictions of imperial courts, cities that no longer existed, banners bearing sigils erased from history.
Sculptures stood on low plinths, some life-sized, others abstract, capturing motion and emotion with unsettling precision.
A woman mid-laugh.
A soldier kneeling to receive a standard.
A scholar bent over a desk, quill frozen in eternal thought.
Even a few of previous generations of Emperors or Empresses.
Shelves ran along the walls, stacked with scrolls and bound volumes sealed in waxed leather and crystal cases.
"This isn’t an armory," Serena whispered.
"No," Julius agreed, awe threading through his voice despite himself. "This is more like a memory cache, not useful in the practical sense like the others, but cultural goods are always appreciated, and as heirs to the old empire their presence in our own empire could further validate our claims to the old Imperial Throne."
Just standing outside the main room, the scale of this vault was plain to see, like a museum shelves spread as far as the eye could see.
The entire contents probably amounted to more than 500 total pieces of artwork, statues included.
Beyond that the scrolls and books on the shelves easily numbered into the hundreds as well.
The total value of the cultural significance and knowledge stored here was probably unthinkable.
Even looking from the outside Julius couldnt help but want to take the forms of his ancestors and create a sort of Emperor’s way, lining the avenue or bridge with the forms of the previous Emperors before also including a statue of himself, and open spaces for his own children and grandchildren’s statues to be housed in the future.
Further exemplifying the granduer of his empire.
And giving even more credit and power to the ruling Emperor, as they could show the history of their lineage with pride.
But before all that this collection would need to be investigated and catelouged first before then being moved back to the Eternal city where it could be put to use.
