Immortal In A Death Game-Chapter 159: The Other Members Of The RLRD
"You know, I still can’t believe you were able to request a fucking helicopter. And one large enough to put your bike on? How did you even manage that?"
"...I negotiated?"
"You fucking negotiated? If it were that easy, I would have a submarine now. It—"
"Harvey. Focus."
"S-sorry."
Harvey was driving a jeep with Beatrice sitting shotgun and Adam in the back. He knew the IBAA’s headquarters was massive—after all, the Hero Evaluation wing was already the size of a mall when he registered back then.
He noticed how wide their land area was, but he didn’t think it was to this point that they needed their own vehicle to travel inside the base. It does make sense, however, considering just how large an organization the IBAA was, and how much money they were earning from all the Leaks and the guilds.
Adam blinked as they passed by another building, and when he realized he hadn’t seen any more cars passing them, he started looking around.
"Where... is the RLRD building?" he asked.
"Oh, we’re way back there."
"End of the base," Harvey glanced over his shoulder. "They stuck us way out here because we’re... well, you’ll see."
"Because you are loud," Beatrice shook her head.
"Hey! That’s not—okay, maybe a little." Harvey cackled.
"But jests aside, Adam," Beatrice said, glancing at Adam from the rearview mirror. "We have our own designated exit at the other side of the base."
"I still can’t believe you got a fucking helicopter."
"It makes absolute sense." Beatrice shook her head. "In fact, we should at least have five helicopters."
"Pft. As if. I talked to one of the guys from accounting. You know what she said? We’re the only department that’s causing them to lose money. I mean, the fuck does that mean?"
"Well..."
Adam continued to listen to their conversation. But soon, he began to wonder if they’d ever reach their destination. But then, Harvey finally slowed the jeep.
"There she is!" Harvey pointed ahead with obvious pride.
Adam blinked. After seeing the massive, imposing structures throughout the base, the RLRD building looked almost... quaint. It was small, barely larger than a house, with simple architecture that seemed almost residential. No, not seemed—it was a house. A large house, but still a house.
The land surrounding it was enormous, however. Acres of open space that stretched to the base’s perimeter fence.
"I know that fucking look!" Harvey jabbed a finger at Adam’s face. "You’re judging too quickly. Come! Come on!"
"You should really tone it down, Harvey." Beatrice sighed, lowering Harvey’s arm. "You are acting like you have known Adam for a long time—he might get turned off and request to be dismissed."
"Psh..." Harvey waved her off. "A day. A week. Years? What does it matter? People risking their lives together and might die together should be close from the first hour. The first hour! Come. Come!"
Harvey moved ahead, waving at Adam and Beatrice to hurry up. Adam glanced at Beatrice for a moment, and he could see a faint smile on her usually stoic face—she glanced back at Adam, nodding as she getsured to him to walk.
The moment they stepped through the front door, Adam was hit by... noise. The interior was much larger than the outside suggested, with an open floor plan that had been divided into various sections with different amenities... and entertainment.
In one corner, a woman with short-cropped hair sat cross-legged on the floor, eyes closed, surrounded by small stone sculptures that seemed to be moving on their own. She was whispering to them in a gentle, maternal voice, occasionally reaching out to adjust their positions. One of the sculptures... was even waving at Adam.
Near the center of the room, a man was drumming frantically on every available surface—the coffee table, the arm of a couch, even the wall. It was weird, however, as he wasn’t making any noise at all compared to the others. But with his head bobbing and sweat beading on his forehead, it would seem he was listening to something—but he didn’t really have any earphones on.
By the windows, another man sat in what appeared to be complete darkness despite the afternoon sunlight streaming in just feet away. Shadows writhed around him like living things, and Adam could barely make out his silhouette within the unnatural darkness. And if he wasn’t seeing things, the man was... crying?
A woman near the kitchen was having a conversation with someone who wasn’t there, gesturing wildly and occasionally laughing and even waving her hand in the air.
In the far corner, a massive man was casually eating what looked like a raw fish, bones and all. He chewed thoughtfully, as if savoring some exotic delicacy, completely unbothered by the chaos around him.
A nervous-looking man paced near the back door, constantly checking his watch and muttering under his breath. Every few seconds, he’d glance toward a corner where something large and furry was curled up—and Adam was sure it was definitely not a dog.
High above them all, a woman zipped back and forth near the ceiling at incredible speed, occasionally diving down to grab something before shooting back up. She was laughing maniacally, talking to herself at a pace so fast Adam could barely understand a single word.
And in the middle of it all, a woman sat perfectly still, staring directly at Adam with unsettling intensity. Her gaze never wavered, and there was something deeply unnerving about the way she watched him, as if she was seeing something others couldn’t.
"W-what...?!" Harvey pointed at all of them. "Everyone’s fucking here! You must have fucked Lady Luck in your past life, man. This usually doesn’t happen because we’re all out there."
And even though Harvey already shouted, none of the members of the RLRD acknowledged him. They just continued doing whatever it was they were doing.
"Hey!" Harvey clapped his hands loudly. "Everyone! We’ve got a new member!"
And as soon as Harvey did that, all the members of the RLRD looked at Adam at the same time.
What the...
Adam instinctively took a step back. How could he not... when all of them looked at him like he was prey?
