Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 32: Serena Hughes’s Anxiety
Outside the Korsyth Gardens Community.
"Miss Cecilia Nathan..."
Damian Hawthorne’s assistant stood before Cecilia Nathan, a sycophantic smile on his face. "That music piece Miss Serena Hughes wants from you... could you let me take a quick look at it?"
Damian Hawthorne’s request had left his assistant stumped, and after much thought, he concluded his only option was to ask Cecilia Nathan directly.
’Thank goodness President Hawthorne only wants to know what the piece is called, not for the sheet music itself.’
"What, Serena Hughes still hasn’t given up?" Cecilia Nathan crossed her arms, her tone chilly. "Rest assured, on the day she and Damian Hawthorne get married, I’ll be sure to give them the score as a wedding present. Before that, stop pestering me. I won’t give it to you."
"Whoa, what wedding present? President Hawthorne never said he was going to marry her." The assistant waved his hands dismissively, rushing to clear his boss’s name. "Miss Cecilia Nathan, we’re actually investigating Miss Serena Hughes’s background right now, and we need to borrow that score of yours. We have no other intentions, I swear."
"No other intentions..." Cecilia Nathan simply smiled, saying nothing.
’She didn’t believe a single word he said.’
’Serena Hughes is determined to get this score; she obviously plans on using it for something nefarious.’
’Knowing that, there was no way she would give her the sheet music.’
’I can’t believe Serena Hughes is still at it, even going so far as to have Damian Hawthorne send someone to get it from me.’
"I’m sorry, Assistant Bell. I can’t give you what you’re looking for."
Justin Bell grew desperate. "Then how about this? Just tell me the name of the piece, that’ll be enough. I’ll ask around and see if I can find it somewhere else."
’It was an original piece she’d composed several years ago. It would be impossible to find it anywhere else.’
Cecilia Nathan decided not to crush his enthusiasm. If she told him the piece didn’t exist anywhere else, she was afraid Assistant Bell wouldn’t let her go today.
"Miss Cecilia Nathan, please just tell me the name. I won’t ask for the sheet music anymore, all right? I’m begging you, just tell me the name."
Seeing the desperate look on Justin Bell’s face, Cecilia Nathan sighed. "All right, I’ll tell you the name."
Justin Bell straightened up, his face filled with expectation.
"It’s called ’Love Spirit.’"
"’Love Spirit’?" Justin Bell repeated, nodding in a daze. "Okay, I got it. Thank you, Miss Cecilia Nathan."
Cecilia Nathan gave a nod and turned to enter the residential complex.
Justin Bell quickly called out to her, "Miss Cecilia Nathan!"
Cecilia Nathan paused and turned back slightly. "Is there something else?"
"Miss Cecilia Nathan, if... if President Hawthorne and Serena Hughes broke up, would you get back together with him?"
’Justin Bell had always thought it was a shame that Cecilia and his boss had separated.’
"What does him breaking up with Serena Hughes have to do with me?" Cecilia Nathan’s lips curled into a smirk. "Without Serena Hughes, there’d just be a Serena Miller, a Serena Bennett, or a Serena Wallace. Can you guarantee he’d ever settle down, even if he were with me?"
Justin Bell froze.
Cecilia Nathan’s words had completely stumped him.
But Justin Bell knew Cecilia Nathan was right.
Without Serena Hughes, there would just be someone else, because in President Hawthorne’s heart, there was only Miss Luna.
If he couldn’t find Miss Luna, President Hawthorne would never marry.
’Unless... Cecilia Nathan was Miss Luna.’
Justin Bell sighed to himself.
’The odds of that were lower than winning the lottery.’
As he watched Cecilia Nathan leave, all Justin Bell could do was break into a cold sweat for his boss.
’He had a feeling President Hawthorne actually had feelings for Cecilia Nathan, but because of Miss Luna, he didn’t dare open his heart to anyone.’
’And Miss Cecilia Nathan was the only one who had ever been able to break through his emotional walls.’
’Unfortunately, judging by the current situation, there was no going back for either Miss Cecilia Nathan or President Hawthorne.’
When Cecilia Nathan returned to her residence, she saw two men in sunglasses standing by her door, but her expression didn’t flicker.
Upon seeing Cecilia Nathan, the two men parted, standing respectfully on either side of her door.
"Miss, Sir has seen the recent rumors about you and Mr. Hugo Grant. He is very concerned and asks when you will be returning home."
"A little longer," Cecilia Nathan said, wearily rubbing her temples. "Tell him not to worry about me. I can handle it on my own."
"Sir also wishes to know if you require a different identity to attend the Hawthorne family banquet."
’A different identity...’
Cecilia Nathan pursed her lips.
’Her father was worried she would be bullied by the Hawthorne family.’
"That won’t be necessary. When I get tired, I’ll naturally come home. Tell my father that I’m doing fine."
After listening to her, the two bodyguards set down the things they were carrying and departed.
Gazing at the pile of gems and jewelry, Cecilia Nathan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but she also felt a pang of heartache.
’She’s been away from home for so long. It’s about time she found a moment to go back and visit.’
「An urban village in Korsyth.」
Serena Hughes tried calling Damian Hawthorne again, but there was no answer.
"Serena, what’s wrong?" Serena Hughes’s mother noticed her strange behavior.
"Oh, it’s... it’s nothing," Serena Hughes stammered, putting her phone away.
’For some reason, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Damian Hawthorne had been acting strangely toward her recently.’
’In the past, Damian Hawthorne would always answer her calls, no matter when she made them.’
"Serena, I saw the news from the other day. Did Damian Hawthorne propose to you?" Mrs. Hughes cut to the chase. After a moment’s hesitation, she decided to tell her daughter about her origins. "Do you know of the Sinclair family in Korsyth?"
Serena Hughes’s mind was adrift; she didn’t even register what her mother was saying.
"The Sinclair family, they have a connection to us..."
"Mom," Serena Hughes cried, clutching her head as she squatted down in agitation. "Don’t say any more. I don’t want to hear anything right now."
’She was the one who had intentionally leaked the news of the proposal to the media.’
’But she’d twisted the narrative, making the media report that Damian Hawthorne had been the one to propose to her.’
Ever since then, everyone assumed she and Damian Hawthorne were in a relationship, and they were all waiting to be invited to their wedding.
But only Serena Hughes knew that the "proposal" had been a thinly veiled attempt to force him into marriage.
And now, Damian Hawthorne was suddenly ignoring her.
Serena Hughes started to panic.
Seeing that her daughter was in a poor state, Mrs. Hughes’s lips parted, but she ultimately swallowed the words she had been about to say.
"Well, I’ll tell you when you’re in a better mood. Oh, and by the way, since he’s already proposed, remember to have Damian Hawthorne come and visit us. Your father places great importance on etiquette, so we have to observe the proper formalities."
As Mrs. Hughes finished speaking, Serena Hughes’s face turned frighteningly pale.
She didn’t dare tell her mother that she had staged the proposal herself.
She was afraid of losing face, afraid her mother would forbid her from seeing Damian Hawthorne.
Just then, her phone rang. It was her homeroom teacher.
"Serena Hughes, the graduation ceremony is next week. You said Damian Hawthorne would be coming, so we’ve made the necessary preparations. However, there’s one more thing we need his cooperation on. Can you bring him over today?" The homeroom teacher’s voice held a hint of teasing. "By the way, I saw the news recently. I didn’t realize you two were engaged. Congratulations!"
The homeroom teacher’s words were like a death blow, striking Serena Hughes right in the heart.
"Didn’t I already give you his contact information? You can’t reach him?" As Serena Hughes spoke, her heart began to POUND.
’Damian Hawthorne... he wouldn’t skip her graduation ceremony, would he...?’
