Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 169: She Doesn’t Want to See You at All
The Sinclair family villa.
Serena Hughes sat on the sofa, her expression uneasy.
Fiona Sinclair stood before her, her expression stern.
"What secret?" Fiona Sinclair narrowed her eyes, confiscating her phone. "Serena, I’m your grandmother. You called Damian Hawthorne’s assistant for help. What will people think of us?"
"Did I kidnap you? Or abuse you?" The thought of what Serena had told an outsider made Fiona Sinclair tremble with rage.
Serena Hughes lowered her head in embarrassment. "No."
"Then what did you mean by saying that to the Hawthorne Family’s assistant?" Fiona Sinclair was absolutely furious.
She hadn’t expected Serena Hughes to be so defiant. The moment she got home, she started causing a scene and even called Damian Hawthorne’s assistant.
"I... I just don’t want to go abroad."
’She knew what Fiona Sinclair wanted—simply to send her abroad, to get her out of sight.
’But once she left Veridia, she would have almost no connection to the Sinclair family.
’If she really went abroad, it would be difficult to ever come back.
’Then everything that belonged to the Sinclair family would have nothing to do with her.’
At the thought of that woman, Quinn Sutton, Serena Hughes’s fingers tightened. Jealousy and rage nearly crushed her.
"You haven’t pursued any further studies since graduating from university. I’m spending my money to send you abroad to add to your credentials, and what do you do? You call Damian Hawthorne for help." Fiona Sinclair looked at her disappointing granddaughter, so angry she was out of breath. "What secret do you know about Damian Hawthorne?"
Fiona Sinclair didn’t actually think Damian Hawthorne would come.
But seeing Serena Hughes’s confident expression, it seemed she really did have some secret leverage.
Serena Hughes clenched her jaw, seemingly unwilling to tell Fiona Sinclair.
Fiona Sinclair sneered, "If you don’t tell me, I’ll publicly announce right now that I’m cutting all ties with you."
The rims of Serena Hughes’s eyes turned red, and she choked out, "Fine, I’ll talk."
...
A red Porsche was parked in front of the Sinclair family’s gate.
Justin Bell got out of the car and said to Damian Hawthorne, "President Hawthorne, we’ve arrived at the Sinclair residence."
The Sinclair villa was a standalone house situated in the middle of the residential community. It was encircled by a small river and had a small mountain behind it, giving it excellent feng shui.
It was said that Fiona Sinclair’s late husband was an expert in feng shui, and he had personally chosen the site for this entire residential complex.
Damian Hawthorne didn’t know much about feng shui, but he had to admit the air here felt pleasant.
When the Sinclair family’s security guard saw Damian Hawthorne, his face lit up with a broad smile.
"Mr. Hawthorne, President Sinclair knew you were coming and has been waiting up."
’President Sinclair... Fiona Sinclair?’
Damian Hawthorne raised an eyebrow and got straight to the point. "Where is Serena Hughes?"
"Miss Serena is inside as well."
Damian Hawthorne nodded and walked inside with Justin Bell.
As soon as Damian Hawthorne entered, he saw Fiona Sinclair. Fruit and tea were arranged on the coffee table in the living room.
"You’re here. Sit, sit." Fiona Sinclair greeted Damian Hawthorne warmly.
Damian Hawthorne didn’t even blink, his gaze fixed on Serena Hughes.
Serena Hughes felt her scalp tingle under his sharp gaze.
Fiona Sinclair quickly tried to smooth things over. "Let’s talk while sitting down. Whatever the issue is, let’s clear the air today."
Damian Hawthorne took a few steps forward and said flatly, "Thank you, President Sinclair, but there’s no need to go to any trouble. I’ll leave as soon as I’m done asking my questions."
"Serena Hughes, tell me everything you know about Luna." The corners of Damian Hawthorne’s lips quirked up, his playful demeanor tinged with a hint of menace.
Serena Hughes glanced nervously at her grandmother, her lips parting as if she wanted to speak but didn’t dare.
Fiona Sinclair laughed and tried to mediate. "Damian, in terms of age, I’m your elder. The scandal between you and Serena caused such a terrible impact on her. Now, she’s afraid just seeing you..."
"Is she afraid of seeing me, or afraid of seeing *you*?" Damian Hawthorne said with a half-smile, his tone both roguish and bold. "Serena Hughes called my assistant and asked me to come save her. What exactly did you do to her, President Sinclair, to make her so terrified of her own grandmother?"
Fiona Sinclair’s expression instantly soured, a look of utter disappointment on her face.
’Ever since this granddaughter of hers had returned, she had not only failed to bring any benefits but had caused nothing but trouble.’
"I want her to go abroad for further studies, but she refuses," Fiona Sinclair said with a long sigh. "I’m sorry to have made a fool of myself in front of you."
’Going abroad...’
Damian Hawthorne walked up to Serena Hughes. Seeing her guilty expression, he narrowed his long eyes.
"Serena Hughes, I’m here now. Tell me everything you know about Luna."
At this point, Serena Hughes knew she couldn’t hide anything anymore.
She had just told Fiona Sinclair that May Rhodes was Cecilia Nathan.
But Fiona Sinclair had immediately told her to keep it a secret.
"Between the Hawthorne Family and the Nathan Family, we must choose the Nathan Family," Fiona Sinclair had decided on the spot. "Since the young miss of the Nathan Family is going to such great lengths to hide this, we cannot be the ones to leak it."
"Unless you can marry Damian Hawthorne, we cannot afford to offend the young miss of the Nathan Family."
Fiona Sinclair saw things clearly; she knew that the key to this whole situation was Cecilia Nathan.
Besides, the Sinclair Family had just been "saved" by the Nathan Family, which was enough to demonstrate the Nathan Family’s power.
If they offended the Nathan Family at a time like this, the Sinclair Corporation would likely fall into a new crisis before it had even overcome its current one.
"Damian Hawthorne, I can tell you about her."
As soon as Serena Hughes finished speaking, Fiona Sinclair’s expression changed.
"Serena, don’t spout nonsense about things you aren’t sure of!"
Serena Hughes didn’t even look at her, speaking directly to Damian Hawthorne. "It’s useless for you to look for her. She doesn’t want to see you at all."
After speaking, Serena Hughes glanced up at Damian Hawthorne. Sure enough, a few traces of gloom appeared on his wickedly handsome face.
Serena Hughes’s breath hitched, and her voice grew softer. "Otherwise, think about it. How would I know so much about May Rhodes? It’s because she tacitly approved of all of it."
After saying this, Serena Hughes felt a sense of relief.
’When she first found out that Cecilia Nathan was Luna, she had panicked for a moment. But then she thought about it: everything she did was right under Cecilia Nathan’s nose, and Cecilia hadn’t exposed her. Wasn’t that a form of tacit approval?
’Although she was being roundabout and acting as if she were very close to May Rhodes, Damian Hawthorne wouldn’t be able to verify it anytime soon.’
"Even so, do you still want to see her?"
Serena Hughes’s words were laced with probing, as well as a hint of schadenfreude.
’So what if you, Damian Hawthorne, like this Luna? She doesn’t want to see you at all.’
"Mr. Hawthorne, she knows you’re looking for her, but she really doesn’t want to see you. It’s useless to keep searching."
As if that weren’t satisfying enough, Serena Hughes added mockingly, fanning the flames.
She was only painting things in the worst possible light, but she didn’t tell Damian Hawthorne that the Luna he was looking for had actually been by his side all along.
That Luna was just accompanying him under a different identity.
But she wouldn’t say any of that.
’Since Cecilia Nathan hadn’t helped her out properly, causing Fiona Sinclair to be disappointed in her, she felt no obligation to keep Cecilia’s secret or speak well of her.
’If Cecilia Nathan had done her part, how could that Quinn Sutton have been able to walk all over her?’
"Where is she?"
