Chapter 245: As Fast as He Can

’She’s not in any shape to ride on her own.’

Those were words that haunted Arthur the moment they were in his view.

His worst nightmare imaginable had happened. He received word that his daughter had been gravely injured, and it was best for her to leave the battlefield.

Not only that, but he referred to Irene openly as a her. When did they discover her secret? It was a letter from Sir Gunnar, so even though he knew her secret, it was unlikely he would normally disclose something so sensitive, considering all the other hands that touched the letter likely before he received it.

Not only that, but it was the town mage who delivered the letter. Their local healer was often a target of rushed letters. He felt a bit sorry for that, but at least the receiving end of the letter didn’t use any mana. Only the sender would be depleted after sending it.

How rushed the letter was delivered to him meant that it was urgent. Even before he opened the seal, he was nervous about what could possibly be there.

It took everything for the former knight not to collapse on the spot at such words, but he knew how important it was that he be proactive in that moment.

He immediately went outside to the stablehands who managed his horses.

"Get together a comfortable carriage as well as my horse," he ordered. "I need to leave shortly. One of you will take the carriage to the fields in front of the Duke’s Tower. I will ride ahead."

Considering his tone, there wasn’t even time for a response as the young men jumped into action.

Arthur rushed back into the house where Rochelle was rushing down the stairs. She had heard her husband’s loud voice from the back of the house since he didn’t bother shutting the front door while he spoke to the stablehands.

"What is it?" she asked, panicked.

"Our daughter," he whispered.

All he could do was hand Rochelle the letter and watch as she crumpled into the stairs with a hand over her mouth. She pressed the letter into her chest when she was finished with it.

"Being your child, I thought she was indestructible," Rochelle muttered.

She felt her husband’s large arms encircle her shoulders, and she melted into him. Unlike usual, she couldn’t find comfort in his grasp.

"Go, Arthur," she said. "Please bring her back where she belongs."

The former knight pulled away. He vehemently disagreed with her words, but he wouldn’t argue.

He firmly believed that where Irene belonged was on the battlefield, but things happened that were out of their control at times. This would only be a period of healing for Irene. There was no doubt in his head and heart that she would lay down forever and give up everything she had worked so hard for the past few years.

"I will bring her back," he promised. "Stay here with Arne."

Rochelle only nodded. freёwebnoѵel.com

Arthur went to his study, not even bothering to bring anything more than the clothes on his back already, an outer coat, and his armor. Who knew what the conditions on the battlefield would look like?

Even if he wasn’t a knight any longer, he could still wear his armor.

Surprisingly, it felt good to be weighed down by the plates. He felt a rush within him that made him want to leave immediately.

However, he knew it was smarter to gather a few supplies, such as food and things that might help those already on the front lines.

Once his stomach was full and the wagon had everything necessary inside of it, Arthur reminded the stablehands that he would leave first. They knew the direction to the Duke’s Tower, so it wasn’t any issue.

Rather than taking a gradual route, Arthur cut through a part of the valley that was slightly more dangerous but more direct. It would get him there in the very early morning, but it was a risk he was willing to take to make sure that his daughter was alive and that her condition hadn’t worsened.

Since the mountains already had snow on the highest peaks, he knew very well that there was a likelihood he would meet snowfall on the way back from the Duke’s Tower.

His head was full of questions that made him unbelievably impatient. The road ahead felt like it went on forever, and when he looked backwards, it seemed as if the surroundings hadn’t changed.

He had never felt such urgency in his entire life.

During his ride, he felt unbelievably lucky for the moon and a clear sky. Considering how superstitious Sünstoian beliefs were, it was a good omen to have good weather at the beginning of a journey.

Only when he saw the Duke’s Tower at the very distance did Arthur feel like he could finally breathe again. All it meant to him was that his daughter was close by.

He pushed forward more desperately, knowing his horse was at its limit but promising they would have a short break once they arrived.

After being kept in the dark, or at least what he felt like was the dark, he thought it was near time to get answers about the battle and what they had discovered.

The true extent of the encampment wasn’t shown until Arthur was in the midst of it since it was still dark outside. He was shocked at how many tents had been erected and how many knights he saw guarding the place or going off on various tasks.

He found an apprentice he gave his horse to.

Those who recognized him when he removed his helmet gave quick acknowledgment. Word had spread about Irene, and no one would stop a man who was going there to rescue his child.

One might think there would be a sense of unfairness for those knowing she was going home, but they could only be understanding. She was the youngest of the Chemoian apprentices. She had been on the front lines since the summer over a year before, when everything fell apart.

A few were helpful enough to point to the tent where Arthur would find his daughter. That was another rumor that had stricken the camp. She was being guarded by Felix so that no one would get any ideas or try to bother her.

As Arthur pushed through the tent, he was quick to spot his daughter peacefully sleeping in one of the beds. Her skin was as white as a sheet.

The former knight fell to his knees and dropped his helmet.
