Chapter 281: Chapter 281

The situation was far worse than expected. This wasn’t a colony of two hundred.

This was a nest of thousands.

A field team of eight had no right surviving such numbers—but none of them backed down. They shifted into an anti-horde formation, spacing themselves to cover multiple directions and create a human blockade.

Their task was simple: don’t let anything pass.

As expected, the tankers were the first to charge.

However, there was an especially strong tanker charging straight toward Rex. Unlike the others, a dark, murky red aura seeped from its scales, distorting the air around it.

As soon as their weapons met, Rex’s eyes widened in disbelief. A jolt ran down his arms, numbing his grip.

The difference in power was overwhelming.

"How are they this strong?!" he shouted, teeth clenched.

"Be careful!" Vellian warned sharply, still locked in combat with three tankers on his own. "I think they’re using some kind of substance!"

"Got it!" Rex responded, though the situation was already spiraling.

The tanker roared, swinging its massive club with terrifying speed. When metal met metal again, Rex felt as if several dozen tons had crashed into his scimitar. His knees buckled under the pressure.

Rex leapt back to put distance between them. Lizaris were supposed to be null-attribute monsters. That meant the only way to brute force them was overwhelming physical strength—or magic. He began gathering mana into his scimitar, but the monster horde didn’t give him the time.

Lizaris swarmed him from every direction. Tankers at the front, normals lunging with claws bared, and from behind, thin tongues shot forward—poison-tipped, glinting under the faint light.

Even at a glance, Rex could tell these monsters weren’t feral—they were coordinated. Organized. Almost trained.

"Tch—!" Clicking his tongue, he exploded mana outward in a fierce shockwave, blasting away the Lizaris clawing at his arms and legs.

But the tanker didn’t miss the opening.

It brought its club down in a vicious arc, aiming to crush him before he could regain balance.

Rex raised his scimitar to block but the impact never came.

Instead, a shadow fell overhead.

Someone was hurtling straight down towards them.

Rex’s instincts snapped into focus—but before he could fully make out the figure, a brilliant golden streak of light carved through the air like divine judgment.

BANG!

The tanker’s head burst with a sickening crack as the golden flash slammed into it.

Instantly, the tanker froze. Blood leaked from every orifice—eyes, ears, nostrils—yet it refused to die. Its trembling hands tightened around the club, its bloodshot gaze locked on Rex with murderous fixation.

Even on death’s door, it still wanted him dead.

Rex didn’t care who the reinforcement was. He didn’t hesitate. With a clean, decisive swing, his scimitar sliced through the tanker’s neck.

The head rolled as the body collapsed.

With the biggest threat eliminated, Rex spun around to assist the others but the monsters toppled one after another before they ever reached him.

’What...?’ He sensed someone nearby. Someone powerful. Someone fast. But no matter where he looked, he couldn’t see them.

The rest of the eight members, too, instinctively stopped battling. Their eyes darted around the chaotic battlefield, searching for the unseen ally who was cutting down monsters faster than they could blink.

But not a single one of them could track the figure.

Only flashes.

Only light.

Golden and silver streaks danced across the battlefield like ethereal serpents. They weaved between the Lizaris, striking with unparalleled precision. Every streak that flashed resulted in a monster falling.

None of the Lizaris escaped. None even had a chance.

Rex lowered his scimitar, breath caught in his throat as he stood in a daze. "...What’s going on?"

"Hm?" Davion asked, scanning the battlefield. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"Someone’s here."

"Can you see who it is?"

They all tried. But the figure remained invisible, concealed behind the blinding speed of the lights.

Thick streaks of gold and silver floated around the hidden person like fireflies, illuminating the dark interior of the ruined building. Every movement left a shimmering trail of gold in the air, and each trail ended in yet another fallen Lizaris.

The monsters swung their dull weapons in vain, unable to block even a single strike. The streaks simply passed through them as it hit them right in the neck.

"Um, team leader... this is...." Davion murmured, eyes wide in disbelief.

"It must be a fairy..." Vellian breathed, staring at the drifting golden and silver flashes as if they were enchanted fireflies.

"Indeed it is..." Ezekiel agreed.

"That’s a witch disguised as a fairy," Rex muttered in amusement.

Vellian snapped out of his daze, coughed into his fist, and forced himself back into command mode. "Ahem—It must be the reinforcement team. Let’s move! We can’t just sit around watching. The tankers are tough—they can withstand these kinds of strikes. We need to deliver the finishing blow."

Seeing how overwhelmingly one-sided the battle had become with the reinforcement’s help, the others finally regained their composure—and even their smiles.

But Rex and Ezekiel alone remained stone-faced.

They already had a very good idea who the reinforcement was.

And if they were right... then things were about to get interesting.

I was sitting in the helicopter, watching the chaos unfold below. Ghost was piloting, silent as always, while Seth lounged beside me with that annoyingly relaxed smile. They’d wrapped up their missions early and decided to "watch me work," as Seth put it.

"So where are you dropping me?" I asked, glancing at Ghost.

He didn’t answer and just shifted his eyes toward Seth.

I slowly turned to Seth. "...Well?"

He beamed. "Here."

My brows knitted. "What do you mean here?"

"Just jump," he said casually.

"What are you talking abo—"

Before I could finish, Seth grabbed my shoulder and shoved me right out of the helicopter.

"Seth! You fucking piece of shi—!"

"Good luck on your mission, Tigris!" Seth’s voice echoed above the wind, followed by a cheerful thumbs-up.

I gave him a very enthusiastic middle finger in return.

’These idiots are absolutely insane. He didn’t even give me a parachute!’

I sucked in a steadying breath, focused my mana, and redirected my attention to the battlefield rushing up toward me. Mid-fall, I spotted someone familiar—Rex—cornered by the largest Lizari, its aura practically boiling from whatever drug it had been injected with.

I flicked my wrist, pulling out a dagger and hurling it with pinpoint accuracy. The blade sank into the tanker’s skull, stunning it. It didn’t die instantly, but it staggered enough for Rex to finish it off.

I adjusted my posture mid-air, timing it perfectly. The moment I reached the battlefield, I landed squarely on top of another tanker—one that a Hero was currently struggling against. The impact forced the massive creature down onto its knees with a guttural grunt.

The Hero gawked at me.

I ignored the Hero behind me as another tanker sensed my presence and swung its club in a wild arc. I felt the wind pressure graze past my cheek as I tilted my head, cracking my neck in the process. Before the blow could curve back toward me, I planted my foot into a Lazari that lunged from my right, using its body as leverage to push myself away from the tanker.

My daggers were already in motion. I tossed all of them into the air; they multiplied instantly, catching the light as they hovered and followed, circling behind me. I shifted my Arcanum into dagger form, grip tightening as I dove straight into the horde. Every Lazari that dared come near the group died before it even understood what cut it.

An eight-year-old settlement... no wonder these things mutated into monstrosities.

Normally, Lazari hives never lasted more than a year since guilds have already wiped them out, or stronger monsters consumed them. But this one? This one had grown fat off human intervention.

And greed.

Subject: Eradicate ’failed’ Lazari Training Experiment

I’ve been training Lazaris in an abandoned building in the outskirts of Gondor. Been in this business at least ten years.I started small—training weak monsters to kill and harvesting their parts. But as I learned more, I experimented with stronger monsters.

Recently, I became fond of Lazaris.

Easy to train.

Easy to modify.

Easy to profit from.

I made over a billion Glacium just by ordering Lazaris to steal. That money blinded my judgment.

These damned creatures were too clever. Without us noticing, they dug tunnels underneath the building and expanded their settlement. We discovered it about a month ago, and the moment the Lazaris realized we knew, they slaughtered everyone. I was the only one who escaped.

I’m terrified of dying to these monsters... but more terrified of being arrested.

In the end, I fled without reporting anything. I’m writing this request with the last bit of conscience I have left.

Please destroy the settlement in Glara’s abandoned building.

Reward: 3 million Scarlet Banquet Points (5 million Glacium).

This was the mission I accepted since it seemed so familiar.
