Chapter 271: Chapter 271

I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling blankly, the smooth stone surface of the hideout coming into focus as my vision adjusted to the soft glow of the lanterns I’d embedded into the walls. I looked around, disoriented, and realized I was lying comfortably on the couch I’d crafted, the monster leather cool against my skin.

I was about to stand when a sharp pain shot through my chest, right where the Spectral Seal pulsed beneath my flesh. It was like a hot iron pressing into my bones, immobilizing me. I couldn’t even move.

"Damn it," I muttered under my breath, more annoyed than alarmed.

I closed my eyes again and called out internally to the system, my mind reaching for that elusive presence. ’Hey system! What happened to you again?’

Silence. No response, just the echo of my own thoughts.

I sighed long and loudly, letting my head sink helplessly into the cushion. Perfect. Either the system was updating or ignoring me on purpose—both equally irritating.

And then it hit me.

Macaron. Glacier.

How long had I been out? Those two were probably pacing around Macaron would be dramatic about it and Glacier would definitely bite something—or someone—until he got snacks.

Clenching my teeth against the pain, I tried to sit up, forcing my body to obey.

"You’re up?"

Just as I was about to sit up, the voice startled me so badly I jerked. Then immediately regretted it as I slipped and fell off the couch with a thud. The impact sending a bolt of white-hot pain ripping through my torso.

"PUTANGINANG TARANTADONG PUNYETANG SAKIT ’TO!" I yelled from the floor, clutching my chest as the pain spiked. The words came out raw, unfiltered, because there was no way in hell I could keep that in.

Magellan blinked at me, standing behind the couch. His brows furrowed, clearly baffled. "I don’t know what language that is," he said slowly, "but I’m guessing that was some kind of answer?"

"No." I bit out, breathing through the pain as I gingerly pushed myself back up onto the couch. "I’m asking—how long was I asleep?"

"At least a day," he replied.

A whole damn day.

I groaned, covering my face with my hand. Macaron and Glacier were absolutely going to kill me later. If they didn’t get their treats soon, Glacier might gnaw on the furniture again, and Macaron... well, he’d probably give me that disappointed owl dad stare.

"Boss asked me to stay, since you wouldn’t be able to go back without me," Magellan said as he leaned against the wall.

"Thank you," I replied, still rubbing my aching chest.

"No need to thank me," he said with a shrug, though his eyes were clearly scanning the place with interest. His gaze drifted—slowly, curiously—over the furniture, the smooth walls, the polished floor, then paused just a little too long on Kairos’ room. Something flickered in his expression before he looked back at me. "But... I also want a room."

"Sure," I said without hesitation. "Any design you have in mind?"

"Here," he said, tossing a shiny gemstone toward me with a casual flick of his wrist.

I reached out, sluggishly, and completely missed. The gemstone bounced harmlessly onto the couch cushion beside me.

We both stared at it.

Then he stared at me.

"...Why didn’t you catch it?" Magellan asked, baffled.

"I’m too lazy to catch it," I lied smoothly, acting like the pain in my ribs wasn’t the reason I barely lifted my arm.

"Mm-hm." He didn’t believe me, but he let it go. He pointed at the gemstone. "Anyway, that’s an Astralite gemstone. Since you look like you love making things, you can use that as a material."

Astralite.

My eyes gleamed.

A gemstone packed with condensed mana, rare enough to make craftsmen salivate, valuable enough to fund an entire week of shopping sprees. My lips curled into a wicked grin before I even realized it.

I can rip him off. Ask for "additional payment." Then sell it at a stupidly high price.

A very sexy business plan.

"I’ll gladly make your room next," I said, already imagining the profit.

"Thanks." Magellan dragged a chair across the floor and sat down, crossing his arms. He relaxed a little, but his eyes were sharp—always sharp. "So," he leaned forward slightly, "what do you think about the mission?"

"Oh that?" I said.

Remembering the meeting they had four days ago. Kairos announced that they would be annihilating all the traitors who scorned and ridiculed Nightjars Organization when they were down.

He called it Operation: Nightjar’s Retribution.

Our targets were mainly Rogues but there were also some Heroes, Awakeners, businessmen and too.

"So are you confident you can catch up with us?" he continued.

The Spectral Seal started glowing like a firefly then my body suddenly lightened up as if a huge boulder was lifted off my body. I tried moving and I can move with ease now. I sat up and placed the Astralite gemstone in my pouch.

"Of course," I said.

Magellan hadn’t said anything more after that and opened a portal.

"Oh, that?" I said, leaning back against the couch as the memory resurfaced.

Four days ago, the air in the meeting room felt like it could snap in half. Kairos had stood at the center. His voice had been calm—too calm—when he declared what the Nightjars would do next.

Operation: Nightjar’s Retribution.

A clean, merciless sweep of every traitor who spat on the organization when it was at its weakest.

Rogues. Heroes. Awakeners. Businessmen.

Anyone who kicked Nightjars while it was down was now standing on the thin, delicate ice of their borrowed time.

"So," Magellan said, snapping me out of it. His eyes narrowed with something between curiosity and challenge. "Are you confident you can catch up with us?"

Before I could even answer, the Spectral Seal on my chest glowed—bright and warm, like a firefly pressed against my skin. The pain that had been gnawing at my ribs lifted in an instant. My body felt lighter, freer, as if someone had removed a massive invisible weight.

I flexed my fingers. No pain. Shifted my legs. Smooth movement. Finally, I sat up fully and tucked the Astralite gemstone into my pouch with a careless flick. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"Of course," I said, meeting his gaze. "I wouldn’t be me if I couldn’t."

Magellan didn’t say anything more, his expression unreadable. He simply lifted a hand, and a swirling portal blossomed open beside him, its edges crackling softly like a storm about to break.

"Thanks again," I said as I grabbed my things, slung my pouch over my shoulder, and hurried through. A second later, the world shifted, and I’m at a dark alleyway.

I wasted no time and threw my bracelet into the ground, hopping onto my motorcycle transforming into my motorcycle and hopped on.

The engine roared to life, and I sped off toward the condo, the wind slapping against my face. If Macaron and Glacier hadn’t eaten the furniture yet, I’d consider it a miracle.

But knowing those two?

I braced myself. The condo was probably an absolute disaster.

As soon as I reached my condo, I hurriedly punched in the password and shoved the door open—ready to scold two freeloaders for chewing on the walls or clawing the curtains again.

But the place was quiet.

Too quiet.

I stared at the empty living room, then let out a long exhale. Right. They could teleport wherever they wanted. Here I was, rushing home like a stressed single mother, forgetting that my two chaotic gremlins could blink across continents whenever they felt like it.

I dropped onto the couch, rubbing my temples. "Okay... system. Your turn. What happened earlier?"

No reply.

I opened my eyes, expecting the usual sass.

Instead, a floating system window materialized in front of me like a smug pop-up ad.

Missed me already? Too bad, I’ve got something to do. Hasta la vista~

"What the—? Hey system! What do you mean you’ve got something to do?!" I exclaimed, my voice rising in confusion.

A second window blinked into existence:

[This is a system generated message. Please do not reply.]

I stared at it in disbelief.

"Unbelievable," I muttered. "And what does 1109d mean? Days? Years? Is this thing taking a sabbatical?!"

My mind raced. If the system was gone... what about my Spectral Seal? Would my abilities be affected? Would I be fighting villains with nothing but sarcasm and a kitchen knife now?

Before the panic could settle, another window appeared—like the system could hear my worrying through the void.

[One last thing, you’re still able to use your Spectral Seal and your other achievements. I’m just going on a vacation, it’s not as if I’m gonna disappear.]

I couldn’t help it. A grin tugged at my lips. Finally. Finally, I get a break from its snide, condescending commentary.

Then the grin faded as the second part sank in.

Vacation? It gets a vacation?

"When will I get my own vacation?" I grumbled. "This damn system..."

Still, one thing mattered more right now.

The Spectral Seal.

I walked toward the mirror, bracing myself. Took a deep breath. Then activated the seal.

A soft glow shimmered through my chest, spreading outward, forming the symbol. And when the light solidified, the seal had changed.

The dagger was still there but a thorned crown sat just above the hilt, wrapping around it like a regal noose.

’What does this mean...?’

The question looped in my head. I lifted a hand toward the glowing mark on my chest, the light reflecting faintly on my fingertips.

Just before I could make contact, a noise echoed from outside the bathroom.

A soft thud. Then another.

Followed by the familiar rustling of feathers and the rumble of something large brushing against furniture.

Macaron and Glacier.

I lowered my hand, letting out a slow exhale as the seal dimmed beneath my clothes.
