~ODETTE’S POV~
The time for my family to arrive was near. Ambrose had taken careful planning with bringing my family here. This alliance was life or death, and things needed to go right. We couldn’t risk even the slightest fuck up and word getting out.
He had wards placed to keep other shifters away. He made a scent masking potion to hide their scent making them less suspicious. He had changed the guard’s schedules so the ones he trusted most would be on guard during the night when my family would be most active.
Tonight, they would come under the cover of darkness.
My nerves were raddled and my heart was racing. I could feel Ambrose in my mind trying to soothe me, but nothing worked. It was a cross between anxiety and excitement, and my body didn’t know how to process it.
When it was announced that they had arrived and were pulling up in the driveway, I nearly fainted.
"It’ll be alright." Ambrose grabbed my hand holding it tight, giving me the support I so desperately needed.
"I know."
We took our seats at the head of the council tabled and waited.
My leg bounced up and down in anticipation.
"Relax, you’re putting me on edge." He leaned over and kissed my cheek.
A knock on the door pulled his face away from mine, "They’re here."
It was hector.
The moment my father walked in, my heart stopped dead in its tracks. I felt my feet root themselves into the floorboards.
He looked tired and worn out. But his face. The happiness I saw. It melted me.
I finally found my words and my feet started moving again. "Daddy!"
I rushed over jumping into his arms.
He spun me around, just like he used to when I was a young girl.
"You look so beautiful, my little princess." His eyes were filled with nothing but love and affection.
I missed him so much. My heart felt almost complete. Tears stung my eyes, threatening to burst out.
He placed me on the ground softly and took a step back and his eyes scaled over me, analyzing me.
I could read his face like an open book. I was different. Changed. Yet, somehow still the same.
"Odette..."
My heart sunk.
It was Kalvin...
Ambrose growled beside me, I could feel his possessive aura, he was trying to maintain his composure, but it was slipping.
"Kal..." I whispered back.
Kalvin... My fiancé.
My childhood best friend. My longtime boyfriend.
Technically, I cheated on him. I even fell in love with another man. I am fated to another man.
"I’ve missed you..." Kal began when he took a step forward.
However, he was met with a growl that made everyone in the freeze. A heavy uncomfortable aura filled the room, Kalvin struggled to keep his knees from buckling beneath him.
"Get one step closer to her, and I’ll gut you on this table and eat your insides in front of everyone." Ambrose let out a threatening and deeply violent snarl. His eyes flashing bright gold as he did his best to keep Onyx contained.
"That’s my fiancée, don’t think you can just step in and take her..." Kalvin started to say, but Ambrose with incredible speed and stood in front of Kalvin. Ambrose reached out gripping his throat lifting him off the ground. "This is my fucking kingdom, you little rat. You are in MY palace. Odette is MY mate, and MY future Luna. Approach her again, you filthy peasant and it’ll be the last time you have a hand to touch your little cock with."
Arya tried to defend her son. "You will not threaten my son like that again. As you said we are your guests, and I would expect a king to act and treat us as such."
Ambrose turned to her and shut her down instantly. "You were not invited as my guests, the vampires were. Witch." He spat out.
Arya looked at us in shock. Her eyes shifting between Ambrose and me as if she was waiting for me to say something.
But I didn’t.
"Let’s get one thing straight. Shifters do not follow the same moral code of conduct vampires or witches do. We have our own laws and ways of doing things. I am the Alpha King, my word is the final word, inside the walls of this city, what I say goes. The vampires are my guests but you four," Ambrose pointed to the magic users in the room "Are crashing this party and are lucky I don’t have you thrown in prison for trespassing."
"Alright, Ambrose, that’s enough. This is my family, not a band of rogue criminals." I reminded him finally speaking out about all this.
I was just so shocked to see him, and I shouldn’t have been. I should have been prepared. But I was so focused on seeing my father, I hadn’t taken the time to consider all who would come with. I was in shock that so many people came.
"How about we all take a seat and start over?" I suggested attempting to ease the tension in the room. It was too thick; I felt the need to loosen a tie I wasn’t wearing.
Ambrose immediately softened at my request, but only enough to sit down a little more relaxed. I held his hand, rubbing my thumb over the top.
"Are you guys hungry?" I asked.
"Starved, little princess, how about you get your favorite uncle some dinner."
"Uncle Oliver!" I shouted excitedly. His appearance here finally settling. My whole family came. Everyone that mattered.
"I missed you; you look beautiful. So fierce. I like it." Uncle Oliver winked at me.
"I’ll have food brought in." Ambrose informed us.
My thoughts kept drifting over to the red haired man sitting at the table with me. My fiancé was in the same room as my fated mate, the tension was so thick it couldn’t be cut with a steak knife. My heart was pounding. The war the two of them were having was enough to take over the whole room and forget why we were all here.
As if it wasn’t already hard for me with it had been months since I’ve seen any of their faces and I was overwhelmed with feelings of grief and longing.
What was really surprising, was to see my father so composed and at ease being inside enemy territory. Was this the same man I’ve known all my life? The same man who would rage over the smallest slights against him? I was still trying to sort all this out while a smile sat on my face.
I wonder... When I tell them the truth about Ambrose being my fated mate, would they still maintain the same demeanor...?
"Let’s get down to business." Ambrose was getting right to the point. "We are here for a new treaty and allyship, I don’t see a reason to waste time dancing around this part."
Ambrose bit down, clenching his jaw with this next part "I’m sure you all wish to have time with Princess Odette."
This started up the conversation that needed to happen. I felt gratitude and pushed a thank you through our bond.
"Father, I’ve grown up, a lot has changed since we last saw each other. I know a war is coming. I know you know there’s a darkness growing in power and numbers, and the shifters, they can’t beat them alone, they need your help, I need your help." I paused and took a breath.
"You’ve kept the biggest secret from me my whole life, lying to me at every turn, controlling my every minute." I felt the pain in my heart, the betrayal. "I know who I am, what I am, and where I belong. I know the path I will take and that the journey that lies ahead is one filled with terror and hardship, but I will forgive you for your lies and manipulation, if you agree to join me."
I paused, steading my hands, regaining the control of my breath. "The alliance cannot be weak like the one that was broken in the past, it must equal in strength of the first pact. I intend to marry Alpha King Ambrose and seal the alliance with marriage as the binding. With this confession I announce I am the fated mate of the first wolf and that at the Eclipse Gala I plan to publicly accept the bond and obtain the status of Luna Queen. And he will mark me."
My Uncle Jeremy stood up and lost it. "Absolutely not, you cannot marry into the family that assaulted your mother, your queen. You can’t be serious! This is insult to her and to us!"
I could feel the air shift, it was hot and thick with rage. Ambrose he was ready to rip this vampire’s tongue, but I beat him to it.
"I am the MoonChild, the daughter of Artemis Goddess of the Moon. And I will not have my orders defied." My voice had changed, vibrating with raw power, it shook the room and carried the echo of an ancient entity, the air in the room stilled and the cold blood in the vampires froze.
I wasn’t the same girl anymore, I was a queen.
"Please allow us some time to consider your proposal and resonate with the information you told us." Ash cut through the silence that was settling in the room.
"No, this is bullshit, you can’t be with him, you’re my fiancé, we’ve been together for years, we are childhood sweethearts who were just in love months ago, you can’t mean this?" Kalvin freaked out.
I felt the guilt slap my stomach. I’d spent years trying to convince myself I loved him. And I did, in a way, but not romantically. I never did romantically. Being with him just made sense. But I felt real love now, I know what I felt for Kalvin wasn’t real love.
Ambrose was steaming with fury, barely controlling his wolf
"Kalvin, I had hoped to talk to you personally, but I guess here will have to do." I started "Kalvin, we have never been in love, and I know that now, because I know what love feels like. I realized with time away, you also didn’t love me. You loved the idea of me."
