I Was Just a Cleaner... Until I Got the Demon Extraction System-Chapter 78: The Final Test?
The number of demons inside the dungeon was tremendously high. Damian and Mathias were in one of the corridors, and when they looked ahead, a group of demons came toward them.
It was the same spider demon that Damian had seen earlier. But this time, instead of just one, there were at least 20 of them, all together, climbing on the walls and the ceiling.
Mathias walked back a few steps. "Hey, isn't this too much?"
Damian grabbed him by the arm, not allowing him to run away.
"If we run, we will come across more demons, and then we will be trapped. The best thing to do is fight against them now, and clear the path ahead."
Damian knew very well that the whole dungeon would be packed with demons, so running like a headless chicken would only mean they would attract even more attention from the demons. He wanted to fight right there.
Despite the fear inside, Mathias tried to focus on the fight and not run away. He looked at Damian, seeing how confident he was, and that gave him a sense of peace.
As the spiders were getting closer, Damian made his move. He utilized his Water Control skill, a rank S skill that was incredibly strong. He lacked mastery over it yet and required more intelligence to utilize it for greater things, but it was still much better than any lower-rank skills.
He threw the water and this time, created multiple water balls, throwing them toward the spiders! A total of four water balls. The damage he did to the spiders was immense. One water ball was capable of damaging multiple spiders, almost killing them.
His attack halted their movement. When Mathias saw that, he was even more confident that things would work out. This time, it was he who was doing something to help in the fight.
That was the first time Damian was actually seeing Mathias do something, combat-wise. And what Mathias did shocked him.
Mathias used a lightning spell, a small thunderbolt that hit the water that Damian had just thrown, and it electrocuted the spider demons! It was a combo of skills.
Many spiders died, leaving only a few alive. Damian moved and killed them with his bare hands this time, punching and kicking them to death. His strikes were so powerful that the spiders exploded. Liquid came out of their bodies, hitting his fur clothes, but he didn't care.
"We actually did it!" Mathias said, "I didn't think we would."
He was really happy about it. That was something no one would accomplish.
"Our skills complement each other pretty well," Damian said, "I think this part of the test won't be that hard, my friend."
The examiners were watching it through the cameras, and they couldn't believe it.
"They killed all the spiders... Those spiders were meant to fight against all the other participants..."
"We will have to send more. I mean, don't they already pass the test?"
The main examiner shook his head. "Those spider demons were weak, so I don't think they are worth much. Let's send stronger demons."
"Are you sure? Remember that they are not hunters. We should think about their well-being, and no-..."
Before he finished his sentence, the main examiner said, "ENOUGH! Do as I say."
Damian had no idea they were talking about that. He was focused on leaving that area and finding a safer place, or perhaps more demons to kill.
"We don't know how many demons we need to kill to pass the test," Damian said, "so let's kill a lot of them."
They moved through that corridor. And they saw a huge door at the end of it, right from where the spiders came from.
Out of curiosity, and because they had nowhere to go, they entered that room, pushing the double door open. Then, that's when they saw it —a huge, open area that looked like a ring.
Damian frowned. He felt something unusual when he was inside that place. Something was telling him to go out and leave, but before he could do that, the door behind them closed. It was locked. They weren't able to leave anymore.
A voice echoed through the room. They knew who was talking. It was the main examiner.
"Welcome," the main examiner said, "you arrived at a special place during the test. If you do well here, then you'll get your hunter ID; no need to complete any more tests like the rest of the participants."
That was huge! It instantly drew their attention, especially Mathias, who was eager to obtain his hunter ID. It was something that would change not only his life but the lives of his family members.
"You two will work together," the main examiner said, "I don't care who's stronger or not, or if you one just keeps staring and does nothing. If you pass this test, both will get the hunter ID."
"Please, enter the arena."
The place looked like those gladiator arenas. Damian looked up, and he saw a glass, a glass that he couldn't see anything on the other side of, but he sensed that something was watching them.
"Is that the place where the examiners are watching everyone from the cameras?" he thought.
He wasn't sure, but it looked like it. Anyway, Damian and Mathias moved toward the arena, doing exactly what the main examiner wanted them to do.
Deep down, Damian knew that the test ahead would be a difficult one. If the main examiner said that they would get their ID if they passed, well, that could only mean it would be really tough.
Mathias was basically shaking at that point. He was anxious about the test. It could possibly change his life forever, and that made it something really important to him.
"Relax," Damian said, "It will certainly be about fighting demons again. They will release some powerful demons against us, but if we fight together, we will pass this test."
Damian wasn't 100% confident, but he had to show it; otherwise, Mathias would crash. If that happened, it would be a lot harder for him to pass the test.
"I know, I know. You can just feel it in the air," Mathias said.
After the two were in the middle of the arena, staring at some metal bars on the other side, similar to the ones they had in the first room, the main examiner spoke again.
"I'll release a demon for you to fight. If you win three fights, you'll get your hunter ID, both of you. But if you win five fights, then I'll not only give you your ID, but increase your rank." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Hunters had ranks based on their power, but it was not just power alone. Damian would have to complete official missions shared by the Hunter Society, and only then could he increase his rank.
Starting with a higher rank was huge! It meant access to more perks and even more monthly income, too. The Hunter Society gave paychecks to their hunters, even if they didn't actively complete missions.
Damian, someone who would go to another continent with Lindy, knew very well that having a higher ranking meant a better time there as well. The seasoned hunters would respect him more.
"Are you ready? If yes, then give me a hand sign, as we cannot hear you well," the main examiner said.
Damian looked at Mathias for confirmation. The young man nodded.
The metal gate opened, rising up, and from the darkness on the other side of the arena, a creature emerged to face them.
This time, the demon was much stronger. Instead of a small, creepy spider like before, it was a tall creature, resembling a bull with eight arms and two wings on its back. The demon had at least 3 meters of height, walking on two legs.
Damian could feel the power emanating from the creature. It was strong. Even he didn't know if he could fight against it.
"Mathias, get ready," Damian said, "stay behind me if you have a weaker body. I can fight it head-on."
"What? Really? Are you sure? This creature is massive; it certainly prefers close combat..."
"I'll go to check its strength. If we both attack from a distance, it will get close to us anyway," Damian said.
They didn't have many skills to disengage from combat. The lack of variety in skills made it particularly challenging for them to fight against stronger demons. That was why hunters required extensive training.
In the end, Mathias let Damian do what he thought was best while he stayed behind and attacked the creature using his lightning skills.
They weren't particularly strong on their own, but Damian knew that the combination of water and lightning would be their trump card against that demon.
Anyway, Damian decided to dash toward the creature. He wanted to see how powerful the creature was, and the best way to do that was by fighting it in a fistfight.
When the examiners saw that through the glass, they thought he was crazy.
