Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Lingering Attachment Is Resolved, Time for Reincarnation

A man and a woman lay in the coffin. The man had protruding lips, a crooked face covered in pockmarks, and a portly, grotesque body.

The woman, in contrast, was emaciated, her stomach sunken in as she lay in the coffin. Her eyes were shut tight, her mouth sewn up with coarse thread. Her body was covered in bloodstains, and many of her bones had been shattered and knocked out of place by brute force.

Seeing Susu’s miserable state, Reckless Young Master Jin was confused. "Wasn’t she pregnant? Why is her stomach so sunken?"

Shen Zhiyao replied, "It’s because her stomach was beaten so hard before she died that the living child was torn straight from her womb."

Hearing this, Reckless Young Master Jin turned deathly pale, his body trembling uncontrollably.

"That’s monstrous!"

"Yes. Some people are so deep in the muck themselves, they just have to drag others down with them. It’s truly despicable."

Shen Zhiyao’s fingertips lightly touched the corpse. Slowly, its shattered bones began to knit themselves back together.

Just then, the sound of footsteps suddenly echoed from outside.

The footsteps were slowing, but it was obvious the person was still heading toward them.

"Host, it’s a ghost!" Reckless Young Master Jin couldn’t help but scream.

"Shh!" Shen Zhiyao held a finger to her lips. "It’s not a ghost. Quiet."

They both looked toward the entrance. To their surprise, it was Wang Jian Guo, the man who’d beaten his wife to death.

"It’s him! Wasn’t he taken into custody?" Reckless Young Master Jin was stunned the moment he saw him.

"He escaped," Shen Zhiyao said, her expression turning grim as she faced him. "Wang Jian Guo. Long time no see."

The moment Wang Jian Guo saw her face, his rage ignited. He charged at Shen Zhiyao, swinging his fists like a madman.

"It’s you! You bitch! I wasn’t even looking for you, and you dare show up at my family’s ancestral tomb! Go to hell! Die!"

Wang Jian Guo pulled a knife from behind his back and lunged at Shen Zhiyao. She caught his wrist, gave it a sharp twist, and a loud "CRACK!" echoed through the cellar, followed instantly by a scream like a pig being slaughtered.

"Don’t just stand there! Call the police!"

Shen Zhiyao placed the knife on a table. The moment Reckless Young Master Jin took a step, it slid right off.

It landed, point down, squarely on Reckless Young Master Jin’s foot.

"AHHHHHHHHH!"

Reckless Young Master Jin’s face contorted in agony as he hopped around, clutching his foot.

Realizing Reckless Young Master Jin was no help, Shen Zhiyao dialed the police herself.

After hanging up, Shen Zhiyao kicked Wang Jian Guo’s shoulder. "Spit it out. You’re a wanted man. What are you doing here?"

"I... I came to see my wife..."

As he spoke, his eyes darted away evasively.

Shen Zhiyao sneered, calling him out on the spot. "You’re wanted in this country. You came here to grab what’s left of Susu’s dowry so you could flee abroad and live the high life."

"Wang Jian Guo, you’re not even human!" Reckless Young Master Jin yelled, pointing at his head. "You had a wife who loved you so much, and it wasn’t enough! You had to go find a mistress! You’re a fucking animal! For Susu to end up with you... talk about the worst luck imaginable!"

Just as Shen Zhiyao turned her head, she shouted, "Watch out!"

"Huh?"

Before Reckless Young Master Jin could react, the knife was at his throat.

Wang Jian Guo, whose wrist had just been broken, had switched hands and pressed the knife to Reckless Young Master Jin’s throat.

All of Reckless Young Master Jin’s bravado vanished in an instant. The color drained from his face as he screamed at Shen Zhiyao, "Help me! Great-Grandma, help me! I don’t want to die!"

Shen Zhiyao said, "The police will be here any second. Don’t bother with a futile last stand."

Wang Jian Guo’s eyes were bloodshot as he roared, "Damn it! It’s all your fault, you meddling host! You were supposed to help me get rid of that bitch Su Yi’s spirit! If you had, my family wouldn’t have died! I could have taken my beloved Ai Ni and fled the country, free and clear! It’s all your fault! You ruined everything! Today, you either give me the dowry and let me go, or we all die here together!"

"Die here together?" Shen Zhiyao sneered. "As if you’re worthy."

The words had barely left her lips when she moved in a flash. Wang Jian Guo didn’t even see her coming before she gripped his wrist and sent him flying with a vicious kick.

The knife slipped from his hand and, with almost comical precision, once again embedded itself in Reckless Young Master Jin’s foot.

Reckless Young Master Jin: "..."

A second later, a scream even more blood-curdling than the first erupted. "AHHHHHH! My foot... Ahhh, I’m crippled! And so... ’symmetrically’ crippled, too!"

Reckless Young Master Jin was still screaming as Shen Zhiyao tied up Wang Jian Guo.

She tossed the bound man toward him and snapped, "Shut up! And watch him. If anything else goes wrong, I’m not saving you again."

Tears welled in Reckless Young Master Jin’s eyes. Her shout silenced his wailing, and he sat down to the side, looking utterly wronged.

The crisis was averted, and Wang Jian Guo had gotten his comeuppance.

With everything in place, all that remained was to help Susu’s spirit cross over.

Susu’s resentment was overwhelming; helping her cross over would be no easy feat.

Shen Zhiyao gazed at Susu’s body and began to quickly chant the Soul Crossing Spell.

Each word she chanted materialized as a faintly glowing character of light, which then slowly descended onto Susu’s body, dispelling her resentment bit by bit.

Before long, under the shroud of golden light, the mass of black mist was gradually stripped of its resentment, slowly revealing its original form.

Shen Zhiyao stopped chanting and said to Susu, "You are now a spirit, and your murderer has been brought to justice. Settle things with your enemy, and then you can move on to be reincarnated."

Tears streamed from the corners of Susu’s eyes. Her mouth twitched, as if she had a thousand things to say.

She walked toward Wang Jian Guo step by step, picked up the knife from the floor, and plunged it into his shoulder.

Then, she dissolved into a wisp of gray smoke and vanished from the world.

The mortal world is filled with love and hate, passion and grudges... and inevitably, lingering regrets.

In the end, Susu didn’t deal a fatal blow. She clearly still had feelings for Wang Jian Guo.

Reckless Young Master Jin hugged his knees, a look of pity on his face. "Poor Susu. I hope she’s reborn into a good family in her next life."

Not long after, the police arrived and took Wang Jian Guo into custody.

The investigation revealed he was a suspect in cases involving domestic violence, gambling, and drug trafficking.

He had come this time to take the 30 million dowry from his wife’s family and flee the country to live a life of luxury, never expecting to run into Shen Zhiyao.

Meanwhile, Reckless Young Master Jin was loaded into an ambulance. Just before they left, he had a belated realization and asked Shen Zhiyao, "Did you know I was going to get hurt? Is that why you said all that to me on the plane?"

Shen Zhiyao looked at his still-bleeding foot and nodded.

Reckless Young Master Jin’s face was a mask of misery. "Then why didn’t you just tell me? You could have at least given me a heads-up so I could have avoided this!"

Shen Zhiyao said calmly, "Some disasters can be avoided. Others are inevitable."

Reckless Young Master Jin wasn’t convinced. "What do you mean, inevitable? If you’d just told me clearly, I could have dodged it! My foot wouldn’t have gotten stabbed... Hiss... it hurts so much!"

Shen Zhiyao said, "If you had dodged, the knife would have flown from Wang Jian Guo’s hand and stabbed you in the chest. At that point, there’s no telling if you would have survived."

Reckless Young Master Jin: "...So that’s why you didn’t tell me?"

’He strongly suspected Shen Zhiyao was getting back at him, but he had no proof.’

Reckless Young Master Jin’s injuries looked serious, but fortunately, he was wearing high-quality leather shoes.

The top of the shoe had absorbed most of the impact; only the very tip of the blade had pierced the leather. A few stitches at the hospital and an IV drip for the inflammation, and he would be fine.

He had just been stitched up when he got a call from his cousin, Kang Naixin.

Kang Naixin: "..."
